A new adaptation of author Patricia Highsmith’s times-testing novel, The Price of Salt, is seeing a limited release this Friday, November 20th in the form of a new drama titled Carol. Screenwriter Phyllis Nagy (Mrs. Harris) penned the script for the project, which was directed by Oscar-nominee Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There) and stars Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett (Robin Hood, The Monuments Men) and Oscar-nominee Rooney Mara (The Social Network, Her) as an older, married woman and a department store clerk, respectively, who enter into an unconventional love affair in 1950s Manhattan. Along with the culture and societal norms of the times, their relationship becomes even more strained as Carol deals with possibly separating from her husband, and furthermore, loosing her daughter. Also starring in the film are actors Kyle Chandler (Zero Dark Thirty, The Wolf of Wall Street) and Sarah Paulson (Mud, 12 Years A Slave). The earned big nods at the Cannes Film Festival, winning selections for Best Film and Best Actress, and will see a limited theatrical release this Friday, with an expanded release possibly happening sometime in 2016. This one will be more of the more artfully crafted dramas from the looks of the trailer, and pretty intense subject matter, but if you’re in the mood for that with all this rain it’ll make for the perfect date movie. Keep an eye out for upcoming TV spots and a potential further release date. The trailer is available here on MADE. Enjoy!
You have probably noticed all of the new TV-spots for the upcoming Terminator Genisys movie, the long-awaited 5th installment in the series that began with writer/director James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar) in 1984. While we did just see an installment several years ago with Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Prestige), the big appeal for this Terminator movie is that it will bring the series back to the familiarity of the story-line: futuristic cyborg (reprogrammed by the resistance) is sent back in time to ensure the survival of Sarah Connor, whose son, John, is the leader of the human race against intelligent machines after Judgement Day. It will also see series veteran Arnold Schwarzenegger (Predator, Total Recall) back in his original role as the cyborg-assassin, but this won’t be simply a case of re-making the original. Instead, director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, Thor: The Dark World) and writers Laeta Kalogridis (Alexander, Shutter Island) and Patrick Lussier (Scream, Drive Angry) will follow the terminator and Kyle Reese as they venture along a parallel time-line to Cameron’s original film (think Back to the Future: Part 2, but with Arnold instead of Marty McFly!). You may have noticed that modern-day Arnold gets into a hardcore fist-fight with his younger self at the end of the trailer…pretty cool shit! The supporting cast will see Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Dom Hemingway) as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney (A Good Day To Die Hard, Divergent) as Kyle Reese, and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby) as John Connor, with Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Whiplash) also making an appearance. The trailer is here on MADE, be sure to catch this one on the big screen on July 1st!
The new dramatic thriller from director Daniel Espinosa (Easy Money, Safe House), Child 44, is opening in theaters this Friday, April 17th. Featuring The Dark Knight Rises co-stars Tom Hardy (Inception, Lawless) and Oscar-nominee Gary Oldman (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element), Child 44 follows a military officer in Stalin-era Russia who becomes disgraced when he begins an investigation into a series of mysterious child murders while the state claims this sort of crime is said to be non-existent. The film comes from an adaptation of Tom Rob Smith‘s novel by screenwriter Richard Price (The Color of Money, Shaft), and also co-stars Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Drop), Joel Kinnaman (RoboCop, The Killing), and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby). Director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) produced the project with co-producers Greg Shapiro (Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, The Hurt Locker) and Michael Schaefer (Now You See Me, Exodus: Gods And Kings). Watch the trailer here on MADE, then catch it in theaters this Friday.

The film also stars David Oyelowo (Interstellar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), who will also be appearing next month as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, and Albert Brooks (Taxi Driver, Drive), who is currently lending his voice talents to the upcoming Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory, expected in theaters June 17, 2016. Watch the trailer for A Most Violent Year here on MADE, then be sure to catch it in theaters…it WILL BE the last new release of 2014!!
With filming completed on the new Star Wars sequel, The Force Awakens, director J.J. Abrams has released a new teaser trailer just in time for the holiday new-release previews. There’s not a lot of hints regarding the whole plot-line, but there are some pretty cool sequences that are included and you can definitely get a feel of how Abrams has approached the material with his own style of filmmaking. The movie is not scheduled for release until next December, so Abrams presumably has a lot of work still to do in the editing and special effects departments, but the trailer alone gives a pretty good idea of what to expect. Original actors Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford are all returning for the new film, which picks up years after the conclusion of Return of the Jedi, which was released in 1983. Also joining the original cast for the film are actors Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Domhnall Gleeson (True Grit, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, The Zero Theorum), Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Inside Llewyn Davis), and John Boyega (Junkhearts, 24: Live Another Day), who we actually see pop up in the trailer. The script was written by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who also wrote The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), plus the first Indiana Jones installment Raiders of the Lost Art (1981). Other returning cast members from the film series are Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), and Kenny Baker (R2-D2). Enjoy!
It seems I spoke too soon when I said I hadn’t heard of any upcoming independent Wonder Woman project in the midst of all the crazy Avengers and Justice League news that has been coming out from Marvel and DC Comics. Apparently there is a solo movie featuring Wonder Woman is in the works from Warner Bros. studios that will feature Gal Gadot carrying her role over from Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and that project has already been given a release date of June 23, 2017. While Batman Vs. Superman is obviously already in the works with director Zack Snyder, the studio is quite not looking to Snyder to direct this independent project. Instead they are on the hunt for a female director to take on the film, and some names already being tossed around the grapevine (specifically from Forbes Magazine) include Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty), Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown, Twilight), Julie Taymor (Titus, Across The Universe), Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones), and Tricia Brock (Killer Diller, The Walking Dead). While a decision has yet to be made on the matter of directing, the screenplay is already being worked out by writers Michael Goldenberg (Contact, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Matthew Jennison, William M. Marston (Wonder Woman-1979), and Brent Strickland. Gadot is the only confirmed cast member at this point. Stay tuned for more news.
With the release of Dumb and Dumber To drawing nearer as we approach the holidays, and the final season of HBO’s The Newsroom airing this fall, Jeff Daniels has had to fill his schedule for the upcoming 2015 calendar, and his new project seems a pretty good choice. Daniels will appear as the director of NASA alongside Matt Damon in director Ridley Scott’s upcoming space drama The Martian, which is scheduled for release next November. The story follows Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars and his mission to survive until a rescue mission is sent to bring him back to Earth. Although this seems somewhat reminiscent of Brian DePalma’s Mission To Mars (2000), it should still make for a good watch. Scott is behind such films as Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Gladiator (2000), Matchstick Men (2003), American Gangster (2007), Robin Hood (2010), and The Counselor (2013), and Jeff Daniels and Matt Damon are both highly versatile actors, with Daniels being known as much for his dramatic abilities as his comedic skills. Other names attached to the project include Jessica Chastain (The Help, Zero Dark Thirty), Kate Mara (House of Cards, Transcendence), Kristen Wiig (The Brothers Solomon, Despicable Me), and Michael Pena (The Lincoln Lawyer, American Hustle). We’ll look out for more news.
We have been waiting to hear some updated news about the next installment of the Terminator series that will feature original star Arnold Schwarzenegger as everybody’s favorite killing machine! No official details have been revealed about the plot, but we now know (via a tweet from Schwarzenegger) that the new film’s title is Terminator: Genesis. The film has just completed shooting and is now in the post-production stage, with a release date set for July 1st of next year. The movie is directed by Alan Taylor (Rubicon, Boardwalk Empire) and features new cast members Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney (A Good Day To Die Hard, Divergent) as Kyle Reese, and Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Zero Dark Thirty) as John Connor. The last installment in the series was Terminator: Salvation (2009) with Christian Bale, which saw John Connor, the leader of the human resistance against the Skynet machines, leading his band of rebels in 2018, before the events of the original film took place. Some theories have been circling around Hollywood that the new film will feature a time-travel scenario that will result in a whole new story running parallel to the story in the original film from writer/director James Cameron; sort of like Back to the Future Part 2 where Marty has to avoid running into himself in 1955 because he was already there in the first film. Whatever the case, it should turn out to be an entertaining watch. Schwarzenegger was last seen as the Skynet cyborg in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines in 2003, so it will be great to see him on the screen again in his most famous role! Stay tuned for more updates.
Location: 509 1st Avenue NE, Minneapolis When: Saturday, August 3rd from 5PM-10:30PM (Rain or Shine)
The Northeast section of Minneapolis has slowly turned into one of the city’s most popular areas for food, local brew, and street festivals. Tomorrow, August 3rd; marks the 4th annual Red Stag Block Party which will go down at the Red Stag Supperclub on 1st Ave. The event will feature live music (more about that later), local artisans, local brew, and of course local eats. The lineup is rather stacked as local favorite Greg Grease will take the stage along with Eleganza, Actual Wolf, Christian Fritz and many more. As if that wasn’t enough Familia skate shop will be hosting entertainment alongside the North Star Roller Girls. Local sponsors include Grain Belt, Schell’s, City Pages, Key North & Thrifty Hipster just to name a few and the fest is free to enter; why wouldn’t you go? If you don’t have anything better to do you should definitely get on over Northeast (yes say it like that), it should be a good time.
