New World War II Drama ‘Darkest Hour’ Brings Churchill’s Perseverance and Leadership To Modern Audiences

Despite the new World War II drama Darkest Hour now playing in theaters nationwide, “Who was Winston Churchill?” still sounds like a question you’re likely to find on one of those ‘the dumbing down of America has happened’ videos. While Churchill may not have been American, himself, his influence and importance in the events of the mid-20th Century cannot be overstated. Winston Churchill was elected Britain’s Prime Minister in 1940, a position he held throughout the remainder of World War II and again from 1951 to 1955. Before his career in politics he had worked as a writer and served as a member of the British Army. His election in 1940 came at a time when Britain’s, and indeed the future of the whole of Western Europe was uncertain. Hitler had been elected Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and, by the time of Churchill’s election, was already marching across France, pushing British forces to the shores of the English Channel, where the famous evacuation at Dunkirk took place (if you haven’t seen Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, I highly recommend it!).

With the United States still hesitant to enter the war effort in either Europe or the Pacific, the newly appointed Prime Minister was faced with the choice of either regrouping and rallying national support to continue the war effort against Nazi Germany, or agreeing to sign a peace accord with Hitler and the Axis Powers. As the United Kingdom stood at the brink of invasion, it was up to Churchill to persuade Parliament, King George VI, and the people of Britain that the war could be won and that it was worth fighting, an extremely difficult prospect considering the ever-growing influence of Nazi Germany and the reluctance of the United States to enter the war. New Trailers Available For Upcoming Sequels ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and ‘Alien: Covenant’

This year, writer, director, and producer Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Hannibal) will see two of his most famous films back on big screens nationwide in the form of the new sequels Alien: Covenant and Blade Runner 2049. The original films Alien (1979) and Blade Runner (1982) are two of Scott’s most renowned films, and this year, movie-goers will get the chance to see modernized takes on both films, which have developed huge followings over the years.

Scott personally got back behind the camera to direct Alien: Covenant. Serving as both a sequel to Prometheus (2012) and a prequel to the original Alien, Alien: Covenant follows the crew of the colony ship Covenant as they discover a seemingly unknown paradise in deep space. As they begin to explore, however, they quickly uncover a dark and dangerous world, inhabited only by David, the synthetic survivor from the Prometheus expedition, who forces the crew to attempt a fast, and daring escape. First Look At Upcoming Live Action Adaptation For ‘The Jungle Book’

In an age where remakes and sequels are the go-to projects for major film studios, Walt Disney Pictures is keeping itself quite busy revamping their twentieth-century animated classics into live-action thrillers for modern audiences. Their most recent project, which is now playing in theaters, is an updated version of Peter Pan (simply titled Pan) from director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice) with actors Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables, Prisoners), Levi Miller (A Heartbeat Away, Great Adventures), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Unbreakable), Rooney Mara (The Social Network, Her), and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, Ted 2). While Peter Pan is definitely one of the more famous Disney characters out there, we at MADE have our eyes fixed on next year’s big Disney release: The Jungle Book. Actor-turned-director Jon Favreau (Iron Man 3, Chef) is leading the project, which features an all-star cast including Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, The Avengers), Idris Elba (Thor, Prometheus), Bill Murray (Ghostbusters, Zombieland), Ben Kingsley (Schindler’s List, Shutter Island), and Christopher Walken (Pulp Fiction, Catch Me If You Can), with Neel Sethi as Mowgli. The film is expected in theaters in April 2016. Check out the latest teaser trailer here on MADE. Enjoy!

Season 3 Of ‘House Of Cards’ Now Playing On Netflix

Netflix subscribers and fans of House of Cards are already catching up on the third season of the hit original series. Starring Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey (LA Confidential, American Beauty) and Golden Globe winner Robin Wright (Forrest Gump, A Most Wanted Man) as political-power couple Francis and Claire Underwood, the series follows the two characters as they manipulate the US political system and its members in their quest to attain the Office of the US Presidency. Comedy Director Adam McKay Filling In Cast For Upcoming Drama ‘The Big Short’

Director Adam McKay on the set of Anchorman 2: The Legend of Ron Burgandy.

Director Adam McKay is more popularly known for his work on films like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step-Brothers, and fans will see more of his comedic approach in the upcoming comic-adaptation of Ant-Man with Paul Rudd in the title role, but the director has more on his upcoming schedule than just a couple of outlandish comedies. This week it was announced that actors Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, Exodus: Gods and Kings), Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Ides of March), Brad Pitt (Fight Club, Ocean’s Eleven), and McKay-movie regular Steve Carell (Little Miss Sunshine, Anchorman) will be taking roles in McKay’s upcoming financial drama The Big Short. The film comes from an adaptation of the book by author Michael Lewis, which follows the collapse of the financial industry in relation to the real-estate markets and unregulated stock and bond trades. Lewis is also the author of Moneyball, which was adapted for the big screen back in 2011 by director Bennett Miller (The Cruise, Capote) and also starred Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Robin Wright. Miller also just paired up with Steve Carell in 2014 for the biographical-drama Foxcatcher, which now has three Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Carell) and Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo). Seeing as the remainder of the supporting cast for The Big Short has yet to be filled and the project has no official release date, it may be a while before we see it in theaters, but we’ll keep an eye out for more news.

O’Shea Jackson Jr. To Play His Father Ice Cube In ‘Straight Outta Compton’

Iconic rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube has convinced Universal Pictures to cast his son, O’Shea Jackson Jr., in the role of his father in an upcoming film about the rap group N.W.A called Straight Outta Compton (named after the group’s debut album). N.W.A. was formed in Compton, California, a city south of Los Angeles, in 1986 by original members Ice Cube, Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E. Viewed by many as pioneers of the ‘gangsta rap’ genre, the group became the subject of much controversy due to their explicit lyrics, leading the group to be accused of praising and encouraging violent crime and drug use/distribution. Ice Cube is working with Dr. Dre and Tomica Woods-Wright as producers for the upcoming film, which will apparently be a heavy drama encompassing everything from the emergence of Parental Advisory stickers to the LAPD and feuds within the group itself. More information should be coming out soon, so be sure to keep an eye out.
