Steven Spielberg’s ‘Ready Player One’ Is A 1980s Cinematic Nostalgia Trip

WARNING – SPOILERS!!! Pac Man, Back to the Future, and Blade Runner are only a few titles that make up the 1980s cinematic nostalgia trip in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, now playing in theaters. Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One follows a young man named Wade Watts who lives in a dystopian United States in 2045. Humanity, as Wade knows it, is plagued by a failing economic system, an ominous corporate-governing body, and a tainted outdoor environment, all the result of an energy crisis caused by global warming, corporate greed, and the depletion of Earth’s fossil fuels. Since the real-world is no longer a pleasant place to spend your time, Wade, like most people, spends his days in the OASIS, an interactive virtual reality comprised of games and puzzles from every video game, movie, book, or television show made primarily between 1980 and 1990, although there are a few exceptions. The OASIS is the mind-child of James Halliday (obviously Cline’s own doppelganger) who, prior to his death, left a hidden Easter Egg inside the OASIS that, if found, provides the winner with his massive fortune and control of the corporation running the OASIS, and that’s where Wade’s (or Parzival as he is named in the OASIS) story begins. ‘The Divergent Series: Allegiant – Part 1’ Now Playing In Theaters

Fans of the Divergent films, which are based on the books by author Veronica Roth, finally get to see the last chapter of the series on the big screen this weekend, or at least half of the last chapter. Like so many series-films have all done since the filmmakers behind Harry Potter split the final book into two movies, this final chapter, Allegiant, will also be split into Parts 1 and 2, with the second installment expected in theaters next year. Allegiant – Part 1 picks up after the conclusion of Insurgent, and finds the protagonist Tris Prior and Four trying to escape over the wall surrounding futuristic Chicago in order to discover what is hidden behind the other side. Insurgent director Robert Schwentke (FlightPlan, Red) returned to direct the new installment, working from a screen adaptation by Noah Oppenheim (The Maze Runner, Jackie), Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (Accepted, Exodus: Gods and Kings). Starring in the series are actors Shailene Woodley (The Descendants, White Bird in a Blizzard), Theo James (The In-between Movie, Underworld: Awakening), Naomi Watts (King Kong, J. Edgar), Octavia Spencer (The Help, Fruitvale Station), Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber, The Martian), and Zoe Kravitz (Dope, Mad Max: Fury Road). There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding acclaimed writer/director Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One over the last six months. Spielberg (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lincoln) has been dealing with various production delays, including Warner Bros. pushing the release date back to March 2018 to avoid conflicting with Disney‘s Star Wars: Episode VIII, but now with a final release date set, production should get underway relatively quickly, especially seeing as the cast has just added a lead actor. The Tree of Life and Mud actor Tye Sheridan has been selected to play the lead role of Wade Watts, a teenager in a futuristic world where the human race prefers to live in a virtual reality universe called Oasis. When the found of Oasis dies, he offers up his fortune in a treasure hunt across Oasis that Wade and an ensemble of other contestants comes out to compete in. Continue reading

Tonight fans of the legendary rock n roll band The Rolling Stones will get to see the band play at the Marcus Amphitheater Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI. The group was originally slated to appear in Chicago for their 2015 tour, but due to scheduling and location conflicts they had to move 90 minutes north to Milwaukee. That, however, didn’t stop iconic bluesman Buddy Guy, who just appeared at the Chicago Blues Fest, from opening for the group. Chicago fans will be making the trip this evening for the 8:00pm showtime. The show is part of the Stones’ Zip-Code Tour; they have thus far appeared in Pittsburgh, Nashville, Orlando, Dallas, Minneapolis, and Columbus, and still have dates set for Indianapolis, Kansas City, Detroit, and Buffalo. Rolling Stones fans can also catch the re-issue of their 1971 LP Sticky Fingers, featuring new unreleased material and studio out-takes, now available on iTunes, Spotify, Compact Disc or Vinyl. The album is regarded as one of the Rolling Stones best LPs, featuring songs like Brown Sugar and Wild Horses, and a cover photo that was originally conceived by iconic artist Andy Warhol; it is also the first album the Stones released to not feature founding member Brian Jones, who died in 1969 in his swimming pool shortly after being asked to leave the group due to his drug addiction, and subsequently the first LP to feature new member Mick Taylor on an entire album, and Mick Jagger playing acoustic and rhythm guitar. Pretty monumental for the Stones history, so be sure to check it out. Enjoy!

Warner Bros. Hires Screenwriter Zak Penn To Write ‘Ready Player One’ For The Big Screen

one

Author Ernie Cline has turned a lot of heads with his futuristic novel Ready Player One, which is a bit of a twist between The Matrix and Inception, as far as stepping into alternate realities go. The book follows Wade Watts, a teenager in 2044 who regularly ventures into a virtual reality program called OASIS. The program contains a series of puzzles and games that the players must solve in order to ‘win’ the ultimate prize: the entire fortune of the game’s creator. Of course Wade is not the only one in the virtual realm looking to win the big prize which is where the story begins, as Wade comes up against players who are willing to overstep the boundaries of morality and law in order to be the winner. The novel was published in 2011 and now Warner Bros. (who has been trying to get the project going for some time) has hired screenwriter Zak Penn to adapt the novel into a workable screenplay. The Avengers and X2: X-Men United writer has been brought on to brush up the initial adaptation co-written by the author and screenwriter Eric Eason. Donald De Line and Dan Farah are in charge of producing the film for Warner Bros., but there is no director attached to the project at this time. Christopher Nolan would probably be a good choice for this, but he is currently wrapping up post-production on his space exploration film, Interstellar, so he may be unavailable for some time. We’ll keep you posted.
