Sundance Film Festival Entries We’re Looking Forward To Seeing In Theaters

Every year, the Sundance Film Festival hosts an impressive number of independent films, documentaries, and short films from all around the world. Titles like The Usual Suspects, Memento, Reservoir Dogs, Clerks, Napoleon Dynamite, Super-Size Me, Saw, and Little Miss Sunshine have all found success at the world-renowned festival. So it’s no surprise that this years line-up is definitely keeping with that reputation. A number of documentaries, including the Amir Bar-Lev’s Grateful Dead tribute Long Strange Trip and Jeff Orlowski’s follow-up to his 2012 Chasing Ice feature, Chasing Coral, have already premiered to great praise from festival attendees and critics alike. At the same time, a number of films have already been purchased for distribution, including Patti Cake$ by former doorman-turned-filmmaker Wass Stevens, which sold to Fox Searchlight for $10.5 million! Here are a few of the festival entries that have caught our eye for expanded release. We’ll post more information about domestic releases as we get further into the year. Continue reading

‘The Comedian’ and ‘The Book of Love’ Seeing Limited Release This Weekend

Two independent films are seeing a limited theatrical release this weekend. The first is a comedy from Oscar-winning director Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentlemen, Ray) titled The Comedian. Robert De Niro stars as an aging insult comic who must learn to adapt his art for the modern world of technology, YouTube, and social media. De Niro is backed by an outstanding supporting cast including Leslie Mann (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Danny DeVito (Hoffa, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally, Analyze This), Harvey Keitel (Mean Streets, Reservoir Dogs), Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie), and Patti Lupone (Witness, City by the Sea). Despite having an impressive cast and director, the film has received incredibly harsh reviews from critics, who complain the potential of the cast and director are overshadowed by asinine, old-school comedy. Judging from the trailer, however, it looks like an entirely crowd-pleasing, worthy-of-the-times comedy, so don’t leave it off of your list just because of a few critics with no sense of humor! The Comedian is expected to see an expanded release in early February, so look for it in theaters for a good Valentines date! Continue reading

Long-Anticipated Miles Davis Biopic ‘Miles Ahead’ Now Playing In Theaters

Writer, director, and star Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Iron Man 2) is finally seeing his highly-anticipated biographical drama Miles Ahead playing on theaters across the country this weekend. The film follows the career and come-back of twentieth century jazz icon Miles Davis, who, in the film, is approached by a journalist from Rolling Stone magazine looking to write a piece about his career and his influence on popular music. Cheadle co-wrote the project with screenwriters Steven Baigelman (Feeling Minnesota, Get On Up), and Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson (Ali, Pawn Sacrifice), and took on the lead role of Davis himself. Appearing in the supporting cast are actors Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Big Fish), Emayatzy Corinealdi (Middle of Nowhere, Addicted), Keith Stanfield (Selma, Straight Outta Compton), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs, Trumbo). The film also features a remastered soundtrack of some of Davis’ most memorable music. The trailer is available one more time here on MADE. Critics have thus far praised the film for Cheadle’s acting. They have not, however, been so kind in terms of his abilities as a director. Regardless, I would definitely recommend going to see this one if you get a chance; Cheadle rarely fails to appear in a worthy film, and Miles Davis was one of the most dynamic jazz-rock fusion artists in popular culture, so at least you’ll be able to hear some great music while you watch. Enjoy!

New Trailer Available For ‘Captain America: Civil War’

With the summer movie calendar quickly drawing near, new trailers are starting to fill up television spots and the pre-feature trailers at the movie theaters in abundance. One such trailer is the second for the highly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War, which will open on big screens on May 6th, 2016. The new movie follows the story-line established with Avengers 2, Iron Man 3, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, this time finding the Avengers split between leading members Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), who disagree over new sanctions that the government wishes to install in order to monitor the team of heros and “prevent any further widespread damage or casualties” as a result of their efforts. As expected, the movie is loaded with the all-star cast of familiar faces, including Scarlett Johansson (Lucy, Hail! Caesar) and Jeremy Renner (American Hustle, The Bourne Legacy). Continue reading

We’ve been waiting for some more news on this project for several months now, but writer/director Don Cheadle (Crash, Hotel Rwanda) has been hard at work over the winter months wrapping up production on his new Miles Davis biopic titled Miles Ahead. 24th James Bond Film ‘Spectre’ Now Playing In Theaters Nationwide

Fans of the James Bond film franchise will once again get to see Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) grace the screen as the infamous British Secret Service agent. Spectre is the first release in the series since 2012’s Skyfall, and is once again being directed by Oscar-winning Skyfall and American Beauty director Sam Mendes. Spectre will see the character of Bond return to his roots, as he embarks on a mission to uncover the top secret criminal organization known as SPECTRE, while M fights struggles to keep the British government from dismantling the Secret Service. This is the same criminal organization that the character faced in the Sean Connery films, and first appeared in the Bond novels by author Ian Fleming. Skyfall writers John Logan, Neal Purvis, and Robert Wade penned the script for the new film with screenwriter Jez Butterworth (Get On Up, Edge of Tomorrow). Daniel Craig will be returning to reprise the role of Bond in his fourth appearance as the character, and this may very well be the last time fans have an opportunity to see Craig in the role on the big screen, as he has stated several times that he may not return for a fifth film. Returning to the supporting cast are actors Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, The Constant Gardener), Ben Whishaw (I’m Not There, Cloud Atlas), and Naomie Harris (28 Days Later, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), with newcomers Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Big Eyes), Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Color, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Monica Bellucci (The Matrix Reloaded, The Passion of the Christ), and Dave Bautista (Riddick, Guardians of the Galaxy). The trailer is available here on MADE. Also opening this weekend are the biographical dramas Trumbo and Spotlight, and the return of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts crew in the new 3D-animated feature The Peanuts Movie. Enjoy the weekend!

‘Black Mass’ Opening In Theaters This September

Oscar-nominee Johnny Depp (Blow, Public Enemies) has recently been working on new installments for the Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland franchises, plus dealing with his girlfriend being locked up in Australia for smuggling canine’s into the country. But his next big project with director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace) is currently gearing up for the big screen this September. Black Mass, which we’ve been following for some time now, stars Depp as Whitey Bulger, perhaps the most violent and notorious gangster in the history of South Boston. The film comes from the book Black Mass: The Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill and chronicles Bulger’s partnership with FBI agent John Connolly, who long delayed the bureau’s capture of Bulger by focusing his attention on Bulger’s competitors. The movie has undergone several changes over the last year, including director Barry Levinson and actor Tom Hardy being attached at various points in the production. Making up the final supporting cast include actors Dakota Johnson (21 Jump Street, Fifty Shades of Grey), Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Exodus: Gods and Kings), Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Imitation Game), Kevin Bacon (Apollo 13, Mystic River), Adam Scott (Step Brothers, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), and Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead, Flightplan). The book by Lehr and O’Neill was adapted for the big screen by Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Get On Up) and Mark Mallouk (Rush, A Walk Among The Tombstones). Watch the full-length trailer here on MADE, and be sure to mark your calendars for September 18th!
