This week will see a number of indie projects open on select screens across the country. We mentioned the Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Snow White and the Huntsmen) drama Equals opening this Friday, about a couple who falls in love as the result of a disease in a futuristic utopia that is devoid of feeling and emotion, and the tension it causes between them and their society. Co-starring with Stewart is Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: Apocalypse), who are led by director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy, Breathe In).
Also opening on the indie circuit this week is a new animated movie called Phantom Boy, which takes place in the 1940s-50s and follows a young boy with superpowers who helps a wheelchair-bound policeman in his efforts to take down a notorious mob boss. The film comes from Oscar-nominated filmmakers Loup Felicioli & Alain Gagnol (A Cat in Paris) and stars French actors Edouard Baer (Chicken with Plums), Jean-Pierre Marielle (Coup de torchon, The DaVinci Code), and Audrey Tautou (A Very Long Engagement, Amelie).
Comedy power-couple Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, Spy) and writer/director Ben Falcone (Bridesmaids, Enough Said) will be back on big screens this Friday with a new comedy called The Boss. The two co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Steve Mallory (Tammy, Identity Thief) about an industry titan who is sent to prison for insider training and runs into some old colleagues who haven’t so quickly forgotten how she screwed them over. Starring alongside McCarthy are actors Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Frozen), Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, Game of Thrones), Ella Anderson (The Giant Mechanical Man, Unfinished Business), Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic). Although McCarthy comedies tend to be either hit or miss, this one will still make a fun date night for the weekend, so see it on the big screen starting this Friday, April 8th.
Director Asif Kapadia (Far North, Senna) will see his new documentary on the late Amy Winehouse (appropriately titled Amy) open in select theaters across the country today. Featuring archival footage and photographs provided by Amy’s family and friends, as well as interviews with Yasiin Bey, Mark Ronson, Tony Bennett, Pete Doherty, and Tyler James (among others), the film explores Amy’s life and career and also the days leading up to her death. Although the Winehouse family was initially behind the project, disagreements over the editing of the film and how Winehouse is portrayed lead to their falling away, saying that too much focus is placed on the negative aspects of her life and not enough on the positives. Whatever the case it should be a pretty worthwhile film, especially in the hands of Asif Kapadia. Amy Winehouse died back in 2011 from alcohol poisoning, and remains the latest person to join the infamous 27-club of rock stars that died at the age of 27. Chicagoans can see the movie at the AMC River East 21 at 322 E. Illinois Street. Enjoy!
Director David Fincher is currently watching his latest hit Gone Girl hold the top spot at the box office two weeks in a row, but this year also marks another milestone for the veteran director. October 15th was the 15-year anniversary of Fincher’s psychologically-driven thriller Fight Club, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk and adapted for the screen by Jim Uhls (Jumper, Sweet Talk), the film follows an insomniac who finds a way to cope with his inner demons by forming an underground fight club with mysterious soap-maker Tyler Burden. The film also starred Helena Bonham Carter and received an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Effect Editing for Ren Klyce (The Social Network, Zodiac) and Richard Hymns (Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Saving Private Ryan). This was director Fincher’s second collaboration with Brad Pitt. The two had worked together four years earlier on Fincher’s breakthrough film Seven, also starring Morgan Freeman. Since Seven and Fight Club the director has gone on to direct such projects as Panic Room (2002), Zodiac (2007), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), The Social Network (2010), and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011). If you haven’t seen the movie I won’t give away any spoilers, but you definitely need to make an effort to see this one. Fans of Fincher can also still see Gone Girl in theaters now.
