Independent Film Highlights…

This week will see a number of indie projects open in select theaters across the country. The 9th Life of Louis Drax is a mystery thriller from horror director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) surrounding a psychologist working with a boy young boy who suffers after a near-fatal fall. The film was penned by actor Max Minghella (The Social Network, The Ides of March), whose late father Anthony was an Oscar-winning screenwriter responsible for such gems as The English Patient and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Jamie Dornan (Marie Antionette, Fifty Shades of Grey), Aiden Longworth (Cut Bank, Hector and the Search for Happiness), Sarah Gadon (The Amazing Spider-Man, Enemy), and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Exodus: Gods and Kings) star in the film, which is based on a novel by Liz Jensen. New Film From Wachowski Siblings ‘Jupiter Ascending’ Now Playing In Theaters

The new film from Andy and Lana Wachowski, Jupiter Ascending, is now playing in theaters nationwide. Starring Mila Kunis (Ted, Oz:The Great and Powerful), Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, White House Down), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring, Game of Thrones), and Oscar-nominee Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables, The Theory of Everything), the film follows Jupiter (Kunis), a young woman living in Earth’s distant future who is the unknowing heir of a powerful cosmic dynasty and must travel into space with warrior Caine (Tatum) in order to stop an evil tyrant (Redmayne) from claiming her birthright. Directors Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix Trilogy) co-wrote the screenplay for the film (which is rumored to have been more than 600 pages long), which was originally scheduled for a June 2014 release, but considering the scale of the film and the necessity for minute detail in the special effects department, the film was pushed back to a February 2015 release. While the Wachowski’s made history with their groundbreaking special-effects work in The Matrix, some movie-goers who have already seen Jupiter warned me to watch it on a standard screen, and not necessarily in 3D, owing to the fact that the movie is so heavily reliant on blue-screen backdrops and digital effects. Anyway, you can watch the trailer here on MADE, and if you’re a fan of the Wachowski’s filmmaking, definitely make an effort to check it out.

Writing/Directing Duo Andy And Lana Wachowski Returning Next Month With ‘Jupiter Ascending’

The creators behind The Matrix trilogy and Cloud Atlas are returning next month with a new project titled Jupiter Ascending, starring Mila Kunis (Black Swan, Ted), Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, White House Down), and Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables, The Theory of Everything). The film takes place in a futuristic world in which the Queen of the Universe elects a young human woman for assassination in an effort to ensure her Reign will continue. The movie is written and directed by filmmaking siblings Andy and Lana Wachowski, and like The Matrix and Cloud Atlas, the visual effects look outstanding. As for how great a movie it will be as a whole, however, I’m not so sure. The Matrix movies were all pretty great, but Cloud Atlas wasn’t particularly well received by audiences owing to the fact that the story jumped around a lot and was harder to follow at times, but maybe this one will have a much smoother flow to it. We’ll find out February 6th. In the meantime you can watch the trailer here on MADE.

Peter Mayhew Will Reprise Role Of Chewbacca In Star Wars 7; Pre-Production Filming Has Begun

chewbacca

Director J.J. Abrams is doing a pretty good job keeping Hollywood waiting on the edge for news of the new Star Wars sequel that will follow the original Star Wars trilogy from writer/director George Lucas, and while there is still not much to report on the matter, we do have a bit of good news if you’re a fan of old-school filmmaking! Actor Peter Mayhew, who portrayed the Wookie, Chewbacca, in the original Star Wars films, will be returning to the production to reprise the character. It had been rumored that the filmmakers were considering digitally creating Chewbacca for the new movie, as was the case for Yoda in the recent installments, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. We have yet to hear whether or not any other original cast members will actually be making an appearance, but if Mayhew is back I can’t imagine there will at least be a few others. Anthony Daniels has to come back to play C-3PO (there really is no appropriate substitute!) and Kenny Baker, who has rode around unseen in the body of R2-D2 for all of the Star Wars movies, should come back just for the hell of it. This is all just speculation of course. Director Abrams, who has confirmed that he has completed the screenplay with The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan, has started shooting some background shots in Iceland, but the movie is not scheduled to be in full production until next month, so we’ll look for the big announcement of the official cast. May the Force be with you!!
