New Queen Biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Filling Out Cast For December ’18 Release

For some time now, there has been talk of an upcoming biographical drama surrounding the legendary rock band Queen, though no such film has shown up anywhere on the Hollywood film circuit. Now, however, it looks like fans will finally be able to enjoy a new biopic surrounding the events leading up to and including the band’s legendary rebirth at the Live Aid Festival in 1985. The performance was not expected to be anything special: Queen had lost a good deal of momentum by the early 1980s, and the band was just another group of performers scheduled alongside acts like Elton John, The Who, Dire Straights, Phil Collins, and Paul McCartney. But when Queen finally took the stage in-between U2 and David Bowie, the crowd had no idea they were about to witness rock-history in the making.

Lead singer Freddie Mercury, who later died of complications with AIDS, took command of the stage and delivered an awe-inspiring set that even his band mates had never imagined. Through 25 minutes, Mercury jumped from the piano, to the guitar, to front stage with his sawed-off mic-stand, leading the band through a suite of their musical catalogue that included older classics like “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions” to recent singles like “Hammer to Fall”. It was all backing members Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor could do to try and keep up with Mercury, whose passionate and energetic performance ignited the crowd and which is remembered as the definitive highlight of the Live Aid festival. The movie had already brought in $30 million in foreign box office sales last weekend, which has already prompted Disney to green-light a sequel with director John Favreau (Iron Man 2, Chef). New Dramas ‘Black Mass’ and ‘Sicario’ Now Playing In Theaters

At last the day has come for Johnny Depp fans that have been dying to see him return to some more gritty and adult-oriented work to jump for joy! The new drama Black Mass from director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace), which chronicles the relationship between notorious Boston-mobster Whitey Bulger and FBI special agent John Connolly that saw much of Bulger’s competition taken off the streets, is now playing in theaters across the country. Reviews, thus far, have been somewhat surprising: Depp’s performance has been praised as a triumphant return to more in-depth characters, but the film, itself, plays out more like a gangster-parody movie. Either way it remains one of the year’s most highly anticipated films. Also appearing in the supporting cast are actors Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Exodus: Gods and Kings), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Fifth Estate, The Imitation Game), Dakota Johnson (The Social Network, 21 Jump Street), Kevin Bacon (Apollo 13, Mystic River), Peter Sarsgaard (Flightplan, Jarhead), and Adam Scott (Step Brothers, Parks & Recreation). Also playing in theaters is the new drama Sicario from director Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Prisoners), with actors Emily Blunt (The Five-Year Engagement, Edge of Tomorrow), Josh Brolin (American Gangster, No Country For Old Men), and Benicio Del Toro (The Usual Suspects, Traffic), which revolves around the War on Drugs along the US-Mexican border. I think it’s a fair bet that your money will be well spent seeing either of these, so put both titles on your ‘Must-See’ list and enjoy the weekend!

‘Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’ Now Playing In Theaters

Tom Cruise (Top Gun, War of the Worlds) is back on the big screen this week in yet another outing as Impossible Mission Force leader Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. This is the fifth installment in the MI series that started back in 1996 with director Brian De Palma (Scarface, The Untouchables) and screenwriter David Koepp‘s (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) big screen adaptation of the popular TV series. Since then directors like John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird have stepped in to helm additional sequels, and now Rogue Nation is playing in theaters nationwide from Oscar-winning writer/director Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Jack Reacher). Joining Cruise in the supporting cast are actors Jeremy Renner (The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), Rebecca Ferguson (The White Queen, Hercules), and Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Con Air). This time out Hunt and company must take on the Syndicate, a rogue international group of special agents that are out to kill all the members of IMF. Reviews have been pretty positive thus far; fans of the series report lots of action, but you don’t need to have seen the previous films necessarily to enjoy it. Anyway, check it out on the big screen today!

More From Comic-Con: ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ + Independent Gambit, Deadpool

A Comic-Con celebration would hardly be complete without an X-Men panel of sorts, and this year definitely had plenty of news to appease fans. First up, original X-Men director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie) along with actors Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables, Prisoners), Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle, The Hunger Games), Michael Fassbender (Inglorious Basterds, 12 Years A Slave), and Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year) displayed an unexpected trailer for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse movie. The film will pick up in the 1980s, after the conclusion of X-Men: Days of Future Past and although the story details are still pretty murky, the mutants and Professor Xavier will come face-to-face with the ancient mutant Apocalypse, who has been around since the dawn of time and is intent on founding a new civilization from the ashes of the one we know. Joining the mutant cast include Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, and Nickolas Hoult as Beast. The trailer should be available for public viewing at some point soon, so we’ll keep an eye out for that. Hugh Jackman was in attendance for the Apocalypse panel although Wolverine is not expected to be in the movie, but Jackman will take up the role one last time in a new solo Wolverine movie. Two other mutants are also expected to make their independent film debuts: Channing Tatum is expected to appear in an independent Gambit movie and Ryan Reynolds will also be appearing in a solo Deadpool movie. Keep an eye out for further news on these two projects. The full panel is available here on MADE.
