Movie News/Independent Highlight

This week will see a number of indie projects open on select screens across the country. We mentioned the Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Snow White and the Huntsmen) drama Equals opening this Friday, about a couple who falls in love as the result of a disease in a futuristic utopia that is devoid of feeling and emotion, and the tension it causes between them and their society. Co-starring with Stewart is Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: Apocalypse), who are led by director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy, Breathe In).

Also opening on the indie circuit this week is a new animated movie called Phantom Boy, which takes place in the 1940s-50s and follows a young boy with superpowers who helps a wheelchair-bound policeman in his efforts to take down a notorious mob boss. The film comes from Oscar-nominated filmmakers Loup Felicioli & Alain Gagnol (A Cat in Paris) and stars French actors Edouard Baer (Chicken with Plums), Jean-Pierre Marielle (Coup de torchon, The DaVinci Code), and Audrey Tautou (A Very Long Engagement, Amelie).

Finally on the indie film circuit for this week is a new comedy called Undrafted Continue reading

New Indie Drama ‘Swiss Army Man’ Seeing Limited Release This Friday

A new indie “dramedy” titled Swiss Army Man with Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, Prisoners) and Daniele Radcliffe (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Victor Frankenstein) is seeing a limited theatrical release this weekend before its nationwide release on July 1st. Written and directed by filmmakers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (My Best Friend’s Wedding/My Best Friend’s Sweating, Interesting Ball), the movie follows a man stranded in the wilderness, hopeless, when he discovers and (here’s where it gets weird) befriends a dead body and sets out on an epic journey with the corpse on his back to somehow find a way home. Critics were a bit harsh on the film when it was shown at Sundance earlier this year, but it did manage to secure the Directing Award for Kwan and Scheinert. The trailer honestly looks like the most bizarre blend of human emotion, dark comedy, and epic adventure all wrapped up into one. Dano and Radcliffe also seem to show excellent performances, especially Radcliffe, who has taken on a rather interesting variety of films since hanging up his Hogwarts robes, so if this one is playing in a theater near you this weekend, I would definitely recommend checking it out. The trailer is here on MADE…Enjoy!

New Trailer For Upcoming Oliver Stone Drama ‘Snowden’ Now Available

After hearing about this project months ago and getting no more than an image of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) in costume as a military recruit, we finally have an official trailer for the upcoming drama Snowden from writer/director Oliver Stone (Platoon, Any Given Sunday). The film is based on two books, one called The Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena and the other simply titled The Snowden Files by author Luke Harding (who also wrote the book WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy that inspired the similarly themed 2013 flick The Fifth Estate). Snowden tells the story of infamous whistleblower Edward Snowden, from his time as an armed forces recruit all the way to his efforts to bring the National Security Administration’s practice of tracking individual cell phones for the sake of security into question. Screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald (The Ballad of Esequiel Hern├índez, The Homesman) co-adapted the script with Stone (although I can’t speak as to how accurate the material is). Continue reading

After months and months of anticipation, fans can finally rejoice! As of today, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is now playing in theaters nationwide, and if you haven’t already secured a ticket, you might have to wait at least a week or two before braving the storm of people waiting in line out the door. Director JJ Abrams (Mission Impossible 3, Super 8) took leave of his Star Trek obligations in order to direct the film, which reunites original stars Mark Hamill (Commander Hamilton, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), Harrison Ford (Blade Runner, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc), and Carrie Fisher (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, The Blues Brothers) with an all new generation of actors, led by Daisy Ridley (Blue Season, Scrawl), John Boyega (Junkhearts, Imperial Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year), Domhnall Gleeson (Unbroken, Ex Machina), Adam Driver (While We’re Young, This Is Where I Leave You), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey). The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Oscar-winning screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, The Accidental Tourist) worked on the new project’s script with director Abrams and fellow Oscar-winner Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3), about a new threat to peace and justice in the galaxy that occurs 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi concluded. Little more needs be said; all I ask is that you not be an asshole and spoil the plot for everybody in ear-shot of your conversations! Enjoy.

Director Adam McKay’s Next Film ‘The Big Short’ Set For December Release

From left to right: actors Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Ryan Gosling will co-star in The Big Short.

Writer/director Adam McKay just released news that his upcoming project, The Big Short, has been given a release date for Christmas Day 2015. The release is expected to be held at the conclusion of the Los Angeles AFI Film Festival, but I’m pretty sure a nationwide release will be happening later on in 2016. The film is based on Michael Lewis’ novel of the same name, which focuses on a group of guys who made millions when they bet against the collateralized debt obligation bubble after predicting the economic crash of 2008. Making up the all-star cast are actors Brad Pitt (Inglorious Basterds, Fury), Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, Out of the Furnace), Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy), Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Place Beyond the Pines), Steve Carell (The 40-Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine), Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Lincoln Lawyer), and Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners). Selena Gomez will also be appearing in the movie as one of the supporting characters. Director McKay co-wrote the script with screenwriter Charles Randolph (The Life of David Gale, The Interpreter). We’ll keep an eye out for a new trailer, which should be coming soon.

New Drama ‘A Walk in the Woods’ Now Playing In Theaters

A new drama from director Ken Kwapis (Malcolm in the Middle, The Office) titled A Walk in the Woods is now playing on big screens across the country. Screenwriters Bill Holderman (Lions for Lambs, The Conspirator) and Rick Kerb (who is actually Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt) adapted the film from author Bill Bryson‘s book about his returning to the United States after living abroad in England for nearly two decades and the “walk in the woods” trek across the American Appalachia he undertook with his oldest friend. Starring as Bryson in the lead role is Oscar-winner Robert Redford (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President’s Men), with fellow Oscar-winner Emma Thompson (Love Actually, Men in Black 3) and Oscar-nominee Nick Nolte (Affliction, Warrior) appearing in the supporting cast. Oscar-winner Mary Steenburgen (Elf, Step Brothers) and Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation, 21 Jump Street) can also be seen in the film. The trailer is available here on MADE. Enjoy the weekend!

Statue Stories-Chicago Launches In Lincoln Park

The Bean in Chicago’s Millenium Park will also be featured as part of Statue Stories Chicago.

A new project here in Chicago is launching this week in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The project is called Statue Stories Chicago, an idea which first launched in parks in Britain and Chicago is now the first US city to feature the attraction. 31 statues in Lincoln Park will feature new icons that Chicagoans and tourists can scan with their smart phones and then receive a phone call from ‘the statue’ informing them of who they are and providing a small bit of history behind the statue as well. For example, if you were to scan the icon next to the statue of Abraham Lincoln, you would receive a phone call from Abraham Lincoln, whose voice is provided by actor John C. Reilly (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Step-Brothers). The project is the work of Colette Hiller, who has worked with theaters around the city, including Second City, Steppenwolf, The Goodman, and The Looking Glass, to bring the attractions to life. Other actors taking part in the project include Steve Carrell (The Office, Little Miss Sunshine), David Schwimmer (Friends, Six Days Seven Nights), and Chicago-native Bob Newhart (The Bob Newhart Show, Elf), who provides the voice for his own statue at Navy Pier. So if you’re in Lincoln Park be sure to check out these new talking statues!
