A Progressive American West? Scott Cooper’s ‘Hostiles’ Paints A Portrait Of The Old West For Modern Times

The trailers for Oscar-winning director Scott Cooper’s new western-drama, Hostiles, makes a point of showcasing Masanobu Takayanagi’s stunning cinematography. Reactions to the film in general, however, have left some scratching their heads. Written and directed by Cooper from a manuscript by the late Donald E. Stewart, whose wife happened upon it in 2012, Hostiles follows US Army Captain Joseph Blockler as he escorts a Cheyenne war chief and his family home to their tribal lands in Montana from Fort Berringer, New Mexico in 1892. Blocker is portrayed by Oscar-winner Christian Bale in his third outing with Cooper, and is supported onscreen by Rosamund Pike, Rory Cochrane, Jonathan Majors, Adam Beach, David Midthunder, and Wes Studi as Chief Yellow Hawk. While Pike’s performance is certainly impressing critics, others claim the film inappropriately boasts its own brilliance. Continue reading

‘A United Kingdom’ With David Oyelowo Seeing Limited Release This Weekend

Director Amma Asante’s latest project, A United Kingdom, is seeing a limited theatrical release this weekend after premiering at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Starring David Oyelowo (A Most Violent Year, Selma) and Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day, Gone Girl), the film tells the story of Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana, who caused an international controversy when he married a white Englishwoman in the late 1940s. Their marriage was met with criticism and persecution in both South Africa, which borders Botswana, and Seretse’s family and local Bamangwato chieftaincy elders. At the time, interracial marriage was illegal in South Africa. To complicate things further, Botswana (then Bechuanaland) was a British protectorate, and England was still recovering from World War II, and so relied heavily on supplies imported from South Africa. As a result, the British government declared Seretse unfit to serve as chieftain and exiled him and his wife, Ruth Williams, from Botswana in 1951. Continue reading

dave

Stepping away from all of the crazy comic-movie news we’ve been following lately, we now have more news about another upcoming sequel from the longest-running franchise in film history. Wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista raised a few impressed eyebrows with his role in this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy, so much so that Eon Productions Ltd. has approached him about playing the villain in the upcoming James Bond film with Daniel Craig. Bautista will be up for the role of the henchman Hinx, who will reportedly be a combination of past Bond villains Jaws (portrayed by Richard Kiel in The Spy Who Loved Me opposite Roger Moore) and Oddjob (portrayed by Harold Sakata opposite Sean Connery in Goldfinger). There is also news that the actress joining the film will be Lea Seydoux (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Inglorious Bastards), who joins the ever growing list of “Bond Girls” that includes Ursula Andress, Jane Seymour, Maud Adams, Tanya Roberts, Carey Lowell, Famke Janssen, Teri Hatcher, Denise Richards, Halle Berry, Rosamund Pike, and Eva Green. She and Bautista join the cast that also includes Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, and Ben Whishaw. The film is set to be released in theaters in November 2015, so filming with returning Skyfall director Sam Mendes will be getting underway very soon. Stay tuned for more news.

The comedy/drama from director Pascal Chaumeil, A Long Way Down, will costar Toni Collette and Rosamund Pike, as well as writer/director Kat Candler’s drama Hellion, in which Paul plays a father who must clean up his act in order to regain custody of his son.
