A New ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV Series Is In The Works At Amazon Studios

frodo, sam, and gollum

Let’s be honest, it was bound to happen sooner rather than later. Four months after JRR Tolkien‘s estate settled a lawsuit with Warner Bros. Studios regarding the profits from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy, Amazon Studios has announced a multi-season LOTR television series is in the works exclusively for the company’s streaming service. The series will reportedly cover stories from Tolkien’s early writings, focusing on material pre-dating the events in the book and film trilogies.

Amazon acquired the rights to the series for a whopping $200 million, but the series is expected to cost a further $150 million in production costs per season. Given the popularity of the content, however, expenses don’t seem to be a cause for concern. A rep for Amazon was quoted in a statement as saying, “The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen. We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.” Continue reading

Garth Davis’s New Indie Drama ‘Lion’ With Dev Patel Now Playing In Theaters

Australian director Garth Davis’ debut feature film Lion is now playing in theaters. Based on Saroo Brierley‘s memoir A Long Way Home, the film chronicles Brierley’s 25-year journey to reunite with his family in India after being separated from them at a young age. The film has received mostly positive reviews after premiering at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals earlier in 2016, and with award season coming up, it’s expected to earn a certain amount of recognition. Dev Patel stars as Brierley, a role similar to that he portrayed in the 2008 coming-home drama Slumdog Millionaire. Needless to say some critics have come down on the actor for his choice of playing such a similar role, but the direction of Davis is said to be outstanding, presenting an admirable, and touching drama of family and tribulation. Appearing in the supporting cast are actors Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Carol), David Wehham (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, 300), and Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Cold Mountain). Screenwriter Luke Davies (Candy, Life) adapted the script from Saroo and Larry Buttrose, and the film is distributed by the Weinstein Company. Check your local listings for showtimes near you, and be sure to catch this one in theaters while you can!

New J.R.R. Tolkien Biopic Lands ‘Downton Abbey’ Director James Strong

tolkien

The Lord of the Rings has already spawned two epic film trilogies, the first in the form of Tolkien’s classic novels, and the second an extended adaptation of his first journey in Middle Earth, The Hobbit. That’s without mentioning all of the affiliated material that takes place within his mystical world, from the original novels to the chronology of The Silmarillion, to Tolkien’s own languages that he created for the many inhabitants of Middle Earth. As well known as The Lord of the Rings is to pretty much everyone these days, very few people can tell you anything about its author, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (J.R.R. Tolkien). That story, however, will soon come to light in the form of a new biopic surrounding Tolkien’s life, appropriately titled Middle Earth. Continue reading
