New Biographical Drama ‘Race’ Opening In Theaters February 19th

A new biographical drama called Race is opening in theaters nationwide this week, which follows the story of Jesse Owens, the Olympian who won four gold medals for track and field at the 1936 Olympics. Ownes’ performance went down in history, not only for his amazing skill, but also for the fact that his victory happened in Berlin, the heart of Adolf Hitler’s supposedly supreme Aryan Race. The film is directed by Stephen Hopkins (Lost in Space, The Reaping) from a script by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (The Tonto Woman, Frankie and Alice) and stars Stephan James (Home Again, Selma), Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers), Eli Goree (Godzilla, The 100), Shanice Banton (Degrassi: The Next Generation, A Day Late and a Dollar Short), Carice van Houten (The Fifth Estate, Game of Thrones), Jeremy Irons (The Man in the Iron Mask, Die Hard with a Vengeance), and John Hurt (The Good Shepard, Robin Hood). Considering the ensemble cast and the profoundly positive message, this one might turn out to be one of the more impressive sports biographies recently released, but that’s no slate against Concussion, Foxcatcher, or 42. The trailer is available here on MADE. See it on the big screen this Friday. Enjoy!

The Mummy, Dazed and Confused Producer James Jacks Dies At 66

Veteran film producer James Jacks, who helped Universal Studios revamp one of their oldest horror icons, died Monday of a heart attack at the age of 66. James Jacks first made a name for himself in Hollywood with the well deserved, but somewhat unexpected success of Dazed and Confused back in 1993. The film has since become a cultural classic, reflecting on high school popularity, alcohol, weed, and rock legends of the 1970s. It was also the first big project for actor Matthew McConaughey, who this year won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in Dallas Buyers Club, and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in the same movie. Jacks went on to produce such films as Mallrats (1995), Michael (1996), The Mummy (1999), and Rat Race (2001), and has worked with numerous directors ranging from Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused), Kevin Smith (Mallrats, Clerks), and Joel and Ethan Coen (Intolerable Cruelty, O Brother Where Art Thou).

Quentin Tarantino Takes On Acting Role As Roger Corman

Quentin Tarantino has been known to take the occasional cameo in his movies. He was Jimmy in Pulp Fiction, Mr. Brown in Reservoir Dogs, and he even blew himself up in Django Unchained! But now Tarantino will be taking on a full acting gig as movie producer Roger Corman in an upcoming biopic. Set to be directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, Small Soldiers), the film will explore Corman’s work and career on films such as House of Usher (1960), The Terror (1963), and Death Race 2000 (1975). Corman will also be making an appearance in the film as one of the early producers who didn’t want him to make a film called The Trip about the LSD craze of the 1960s. Although this will be Tarantino’s first time taking on a lead role, he has always done a pretty decent job with the small parts. I definitely think this is a challenge he’ll rise to with ease. As a writer and director, he already has a nag for character development, so it’s just a matter of applying himself.
