Last night the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton. Jimmy Falon hosted the event which was filled with surprises, including a politically-driven speech from Meryl Streep. But perhaps the most impressive part of the evening was the new musical from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle, La La Land, which set a new record with 7 Golden Globe awards, including Best Picture – Musical or Comedy. Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine, The Big Short) and Emma Stone (The Help, Birdman) both took home the Globe for Best Actor/Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and Chazelle won the Globe for Best Director. La La Land also won for Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song. Congratulations to all the winners! The full list of winners is provided below. Continue reading

Recent Changes In Film Release Date Schedules

The film industry is always coping with conflicting schedules and merging franchises that are controlled by separate production companies. That being said, release dates for films that are currently in production should always be taken with a grain of salt. Dates are bound to change, new productions of higher profitability, and even seasons of the year all play big roles in determining when a film actually hits theaters.Shanghai, for example, is just now being released in the United States, even though it was filmed and released overseas close to five years ago. Regardless of what factors play into it, here are some updates to some film release schedules you might want to be aware of.

1. Warner Bros. has just announced that Christopher Nolan‘s next directorial project (his first since Interstellar was released back in December 2014) has been give a release date for July 21, 2017. No details have yet been made on the plot or who will star in the film, but it’s good to know the Inception and Dark Knight series director is getting back to work.

2. Oliver Stone‘s upcoming biopic on former NSA-employee turned traitor Edward Snowden, appropriately titled Snowden, has been pushed back from a Christmas release to an unspecified release date in 2016. We’ll keep an eye out for an exact date.

3. The new Western (yes, there is another one coming out!) with Oscar-winner Natalie Portman (Leon: The Professional, Black Swan) titled Jane Got A Gun, which was also expected in theaters sometime this Holiday season, has also been pushed back for a February 2016 release date. The script for this project has already been delayed while the script was re-written, but with any luck the new date should be the last delay for director Gavin O’Connor (Miracle, Warrior).

Stay tuned for more updates!

Casting Updates On Upcoming Steve Jobs Biopic From Director Danny Boyle

Since director Danny Boyle‘s new Steve Jobs project was picked up by Universal Pictures, some new changes have been made to the supporting cast. Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave, X-Men: Days of Future Past) is still set to lead the film as the Apple co-founder, and Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express, This Is The End) is attached to star as co-founder Steve Wozniak, but Natalie Portman has unfortunately dropped out of the film. Since Portman has decided to leave, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, The Social Network) is looking to fill the remainder of the supporting cast, including the role of Apple CEO John Sculley. News from Deadline indicates that his top contender for that role is The Newsroom‘s Jeff Daniels, but an official contract has yet to be drawn up. We’ll keep an eye out for a final cast list.

Universal Picks Up Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs Biopic With Michael Fassbender

jobs

Having been dropped from development at Sony Pictures, director Danny Boyle‘s upcoming Steve Jobs biopic from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has now been picked up by Universal Pictures for $30 million. Michael Fassbender is attached to lead the film and now Natalie Portman is in talks to take an unknown major role in the movie. The script will follow a sixteen year span that sees the release of three major apple projects, and according to Sorkin will largely incorporate material from seven other major characters like John Sculley and Joanna Hoffman. With the supporting cast beginning to be filled in, and a major distributor backing the project, we should see production start to pick up on this one. As to how excited audiences will be for another Steve Jobs movie? That’s anybody’s guess, really.

Thor Sequel Reaches $500 Million Worldwide

thor

The sequel to Thor (2011) was just released this weekend, and already it has out-sold the original by more than $50 million dollars! The Disney release made around $152 million in domestic box-office sales, the second comic-release to do so by Disney this year, following Iron Man 3 earlier this year. Thor: The Dark World stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, both reprising their roles from the original film as Thor and Jane Foster. The movie also features Tom Hiddleston, who is reprising the role of Loki, the villain in The Avengers (2012), in order to assist Thor in the upcoming war of darkness. You can still see the movie in theaters, and if you’re a comic book fan I wouldn’t wait too long. It won’t bee too long before we start seeing the holiday release dates sneaking up on us. Thanksgiving is already next week!
