Disney is continuing to replenish its classic animated line-up with a new live-action adaptation of the 1977 feature Pete’s Dragon. Co-written and directed by David Lowery (Pioneer, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), the new film is led by Oakes Fegley (This Is Where I Leave You, The Truth About Lies) as the young orphan Pete, whose best friend just so happens to be a big green dragon named Elliot. Leading the rest of the cast is The Help and Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard, who is joined on screen by Karl Urban (The Bourne Supremacy, Star Trek), Wes Bentley (American Beauty, Interstellar), Oona Laurence (Southpaw, Lamb), and Oscar-winner Robert Redford (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All The President’s Men). Screenwriter Toby Halbrooks, who has worked on a number of projects with director Lowery, co-wrote the film, which doesn’t appear to feature the all-too-memorable Gogans or the crazed and crooked Dr. Terminus. The trailer looks like it’s going to turn into a really heavy, emotional movie, like Disney tends to do these days, but I’d say it will probably still be worth the watch. The new movie opens in theaters this August 12th. Watch the trailer here on MADE!
The new boxing drama Southpaw from The Shield and Sons of Anarchy writer/director Kurt Sutter is opening in theaters this Friday, July 24th. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer), the film stars Oscar-nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky, Prisoners) as boxer Billy Hope, who looks to boxing-trainer Tick Willis (portrayed by fellow Oscar-nominee Forest Whitaker) to help him train for a fight after the death of his wife and loss of his daughter to child services. Also starring in the film are actors Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers, A Most Wanted Man), Oona Laurence (Penny Dreadful, Lamb), and Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Skyfall). The trailer is here on MADE. See it on the big screen this Friday!
One of Disney‘s iconic animated features, 1977’s Pete’s Dragon, is getting a modernized update and recent news has Bryce Dallas Howard (The Village, The Help) joining the cast lineup. Pete’s Dragon followed an orphan boy, Pete, who is guided and protected by a giant green dragon named Elliot as they pass from town to town trying to evade the abusive family who adopted Pete after his parents died. The film is known for it’s use of animation and live-action film as well as the popular single from the film’s score, Candle on the Water. Sean Marshall, Helen Reddy, Mickey Rooney, and Shelley Winters lead the original cast, and the film received two Oscar nominations for Best Score and Best Original Song (Candle on the Water). The new film will be helmed by director David Lowery (Pioneer, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) and feature Howard as part of a cast that already includes Robert Redford (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting), Oona Laurence (Penny Dreadful, American Gladiators), and Oakes Fegley (Fort Bliss, This Is Where I Leave You) as Pete. While the original took place in a New England fishing town and featured a musical-style soundtrack, the new film will take place in a tree-logging town and not feature any musical numbers, save the actual score that plays along with the film. Filming is scheduled for this January in New Zealand at Stone Street Studios.
