Allan Kingdom took to Twitter last week to announce the release of a new music video, as well as the release of a new project dubbed Lines. Directed by Cole Bennett of Chicago based Lyrical Lemonade, the colorful visual fits the record well. The green screen approach isn’t always effective, but Bennett does a good job of keeping things fresh. Allan’s versatility shines bright, his prowess with auto-tune has translated into songs with a lot of depth. This one could easily hit air-waves just in time for the summer. Check out the video for “Know About It” above and keep an eye out for Lines April 7th.
Bobby Raps has been heating up as of late, the Twin Cities artist took to Worldstar HipHop yesterday to premiere the video for his latest track “Purgatory.” Directed by Stephen Maturen, the visual compliments the song very well. Dark and gritty, Bobby gets personal on this record exploring his inner depths; a powerful practice of introspection. Check out the video for “Purgatory” above and peep the fire snippet towards the end.
RP Hooks has always had some of the more artistic visuals in the Twin Cities, his most recent release, “Pac Talk,” continues that trend. Directed by Alan de Leon Taverna, the visual takes on a dark tone that matches the record perfectly. Minimalist, the video does a good job of providing a cinematic feel. Hooks’ abrasive style sounds rebellious in a world where tension is mounting, short but sweet; this track definitely sets the tone. Director Adam Smith’s family-crime drama Trespass Against Us received an Official Selection nod at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), as well as top nods at the British Independent Film Awards and the Zurich Film Festival. Following a number of runs at various film festivals here in the United States, the film received a brief limited release back in January, but as of now we have yet to see it picked up for major distribution in theaters nationwide, but here’s hoping that changes! Written by documentary director Alastair Siddons (Turn it Loose, Inside Out), Trespass Against Us follows a man who comes into conflict with his outlaw father and family after he decides he must find a way out of his own criminal world in order to provide a better future for his own family. Michael Fassbender (Macbeth, The Light Between Oceans) and Brendan Gleeson (Cold Mountain, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) lead the cast as Chad and Colby Cutler, the father and son who come to arms with each other over the former’s desire to break free of his criminal past. Sarah White finished off 2016 with the release of a new video for her record titled “Sweet Song.” Directed by Jovante Williams, the visual is striking to say the least. White’s voice glides over the dynamic instrumental holding all parts together like an adhesive. Cameos abound, the visual’s climax sees Sarah and her companion (deM atlaS) enthralled in each other, until finally giving into the electric energy around them. We don’t usually delve inTO the upper echelons of the hip hop world, but when it comes to showing love to one of our favorite Minnesota bred artists, anything can happen. If you didn’t already know, Adam DeGross has been shooting with A$AP Ferg for quite some time now, it appears their time on the road has expanded into a video for Ferg’s track “Uzi Gang.” Shot during an actual hardcore/hip hop show, the energy can be felt through the screen. Marty Baller & Lil Uzi are featured on the record as well as a cameo from the homie Tony South. Check out the video above and keep an eye out for more from Adam Degross.
J. Plaza has had a good 2016. The buzzing Twin Cities artist took the stage at Rhymesayers & IPR’s First Avenue showcase last night alongside Nazeem & Spencer Joles. Known for his crisp visuals, thanks to the homies from Cereal Films, Plaza recently released yet another solid piece in “Fuck It.” High octane from the jump, “Fuck It” thumps hard while Plaza uses his intricate lyricism to inject energy into the track. J. Plaza was once one of the Cities’ best kept secrets, now he’s on the verge of something big in 2017. Check out the video for “Fuck It” above and stay tuned for more from J. Plaza.

Finding Novyon has been everywhere in 2016, most recently he up’d the ante with the release of his new project Believe In MPLS. A collaboration with fellow Minnesotan, producer J. KELR; the album proves that both artists still have plenty to offer. The title track unfolds cinematically with Novyon cast among various locations, Robert Henry even enlists a drone allowing for some nice aerial shots. A record that should be in everyone’s rotation, “Believe In MPLS,” is a nice change of pace from the current trap sound that is so prevalent in hip hop right now.
