Chicago Is Making Plans To Celebrate The 30th Anniversary of ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’

This May will mark the 30th anniversary of acclaimed writer/director John Hughes‘ iconic tribute to truancy, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Like most of Hughes’ films, the movie was filmed in Chicago, where the director was from, and features some of the city’s most memorable sites, including Wrigley Field, Calder’s Flamingo in downtown’s Federal Plaza, and Von Steuben Day, during which Ferris hijacked a parade float and led the city in a fanfare of The BeatlesTwist and Shout. To celebrate, the city of Chicago is planning an all out Ferris Fest celebration on the weekend of May 20th-22nd, which will feature a bus tour that follows Ferris’s “tour de Chicago” on that day off. There will also be a recreation of Ferris’s bedroom, and fans will get the chance to sit in Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane’s seats in Wrigley Field. The day will wrap with a screening of the movie at Hughes Theater. Thus far none of the original lead actors, namely Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, and Mia Sara, have committed to making an appearance, but the event organizers are still hopeful at least a few of them will make an appearance. If you’re a fan of the movie, or just want an excuse to visit Chicago for the weekend, be sure to mark your calendar for the event. Tickets will most likely be sold in advance, but so far as we know they are not yet available. Check back for more updates.

Upcoming ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel Gets Release Date From Warner Bros.

bladerunner

Oscar-winner Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) is currently serving as producer for the upcoming sequel to his critically-acclaimed 1982 sci-fi thriller Blade Runner. The new film will be directed by Dennis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario) and will feature original star Harrison Ford (The Fugitive, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), reprising his role as Rick Deckard, alongside newcomer Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Big Short). The original Blade Runner took place in 2019 Los Angeles, a now dark and desperate metropolis that’s overrun with crime and urban decay. The Blade Runners are responsible for assassinating ‘replicants,’ androids made to look like humans but displaying no sign of human emotion. Rick Deckard comes in when he is assigned to track down four replicants responsible for a mutiny on the Off World colony, but as he tracks them down, he encounters another replicant, Rachel, that displays human emotion, and throws Deckard into a spiral of uncertainty as he continues to pursue the leader of the replicant mutineers. The original film was based on the novel by Philip K. Dick and was adapted for the screen by Scott and Hampton Fancher (The Mighty Quinn, The Minus Man). So far it looks Fancher will return to co-write the new film with Scott and screenwriter Michael Green (Green Lantern, Gotham). Warner Bros. just announced this week that the film will be scheduled for release on January 12th, 2018. Stay tuned for more updates.

Oliver Stone’s New Biopic ‘Snowden’ With Joseph Gordon-Levitt Now Filming

levitt
Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden in upcoming Oliver Stone biopic Snowden (2015).

Director Oliver Stone has presented some pretty controversial biographical films in his career, JFK, Nixon, and W. just to name a few. His latest project, again simply titled Snowden, about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is now filming with actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) in the lead role. More specifically, the plot follows Snowden from his time in the US Army in 2004 to his groundbreaking interview in Hong Kong with documentarian Laura Poitras (whose documentary film, Citizenfour, about that very interview, just won an Oscar for Best Documentary), during which he exposed top-secret NSA documents before fleeing to Russia for asylum. The script comes from two primary sources: author Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Anatoly Kucherena’s Time of the Octopus (Kucherena is Snowden’s Russian attorney), which were adapted for the film by Stone and screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald. Included in the supporting cast are actors Shailene Woodley (Divergent, The Fault in our Stars), Scott Eastwood (Texas Chainsaw 3D, Fury), Nicholas Cage (Face-Off, Matchstick Men), Timothy Olyphant (Live Free or Die Hard, Justified), Zachary Quinto (American Horror Story, Star Trek Into Darkness), and Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton, The Exorcism of Emily Rose). The film is scheduled for release Christmas Day 2015. Stay tuned for more news.

J.C. Chandor’s ‘A Most Violent Year’ Now Playing In Theaters Nationwide

J.C. Chandor‘s new crime-drama A Most Violent Year is now playing in theaters nationwide, and with a Golden Globe nomination already secured, it looks like a pretty great watch. The story takes place in 1981 New York City, the most violent year in the city’s history, and follows an immigrant couple as they struggle to protect their family and business from the impending violence and corruption of the New York streets. Starring as Abel and Anna Morales are Golden Globe nominees Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Inside Llewyn Davis) and Jessica Chastain (The Help, Interstellar), along with David Oyelowo (Interstellar, Selma), Alessandro Nivola (Face-Off, American Hustle), and Albert Brooks (Taxi Driver, Drive). Chandor wrote and directed the film himself, his first since his last 2013 project All Is Lost with Robert Redford. The trailer for A Most Violent Year is here on MADE. I’m definitely recommending you go and see this one, so put it up towards the top of your list with Selma and American Sniper.

Hans Zimmer To Score Zach Snyder’s ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

zimmer

Hans Zimmer has composed some of the most memorable film scores in Hollywood, working on projects that include The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight, Inception, Black Hawk Down, The DaVinci Code, Face/Off, I Am Sam, and Gladiator to name just a few. The composer is also currently working on director Chris Nolan’s upcoming space-epic, Interstellar, which is set to come out later this year, but his next project may be a return to the comic-book genre with Zack Snyder’s upcoming sequel to Man of Steel, which is still only known as Batman vs. Superman. The project is scheduled to be released sometime in 2016, but Zimmer is still not positive he will want to work on the new project, especially given his past work with Nolan and the Batman character in The Dark Knight series, but he has not officially ruled it out yet either. One can understand his hesitation: it would be a huge responsibility to compose a score that brings new themes to a character that you have already spent a great deal of time with. That being said, the Oscar winner, given his talent and track record, would undoubtedly be a great contribution to the new film, which Zimmer hopes will be totally separate from Nolan’s trilogy. Let’s hope that he decides to take the job!
