Sofia Coppola And Others Win Top Prizes As 70th Cannes Film Festival Wraps

beguiled

The 70th Cannes Film Festival wrapped up this year with several big surprises. The Killing of a Sacred Deer and You Were Never Really Here both tied for the best screenplay award. Sofia Coppola became the first female director to win the Best Director award at Cannes in 56 years for The Beguiled, an adaptation of Thomas Cullinan’s Civil War novel about a wounded soldier who takes refuge among the inhabitants of a girls’ school in Virginia. Joaquin Phoenix and Diane Kruger were awarded best actor awards for their respective roles in You Were Never Really Here and In The Fade, the latter of which featured Kruger speaking in her native German. Additionally, Nicole Kidman received a special award for her appearances in four of this year’s festival entries, including The Beguiled, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, How to Talk to Girls at Parties, and Top of the Lake. Other noteworthy entries include BPM (Beats Per Minute), a drama focused around the French gay-rights movement in the early 90s that earned this year’s Grand Prix, and Ruben Östlund’s The Square, about a high-class museum curator who is forced to mingle with lower class members when he is pick-pocketed on the street. Director James Wan Will Produce And Adapt His Graphic Novel ‘Malignant Man’ For 20th Century Fox

Although he is working tirelessly on the revived Fast & Furious 7, director James Wan is already looking to his future plans, which may include producing and directing his own graphic novel for 20th Century Fox. Deadline recently reported that Fox bought the rights to Wan’s graphic novel Malignant Man and, if all goes well, will have Wan producing and directing the project. The novel follows a cancer patient (Alan Gates) who learns that his once-terminal cancer tumor is actually giving him superpowers and allows him to become a crime-fighting superhero, so it’s an interesting combination of DC Comics meets Phenomenon. Fast & Furious 7 is still in the filming process after a delayed production following Paul Walker’s death last year, so we don’t really know when Malignant Man will really get rolling, but probably sometime in the next two years. Fast & Furious 7 is scheduled for release in 2015.

Fresh off his 5th Oscar nomination for Best Actor in The Wolf of Wall Street, Leonardo DiCaprio will be moving forward with a film from director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (21 Grams, Babel). Inarritu will be adapting author Michael Punke’s novel The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, which follows the story of fur-trapper Hugh Glass, who journeyed up the uncharted Missouri River in the 19th century with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company and was abandoned by his troupe and left for dead after a Grizzly bear attacked and critically wounded him. Glass survived, however, and after a two-thousand mile trek back to civilization, completely unarmed and seriously wounded, swears vengeance against those who abandoned him in the wilderness. The film will be produced through Twentieth Century Fox and New Regency Productions, and will hopefully be hitting theaters sometime in the fall of 2015. DiCaprio is also currently working as producer on two films: Home, which is now in the filming process, and A Boy and His Tiger, but there is no word on whether or not he will appear in these films, or when we can expect to see them released. Inarritu’s film adaptation will be titled The Revenant and will be penned by himself and screenwriter Mark L. Smith (Vacancy, The Hole).
