‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘The Infiltrator’ Opening in Theaters This Weekend

The long anticipated Ghostbusters reboot with Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, Spy), Kristen Wiig (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Martian), Kate McKinnon (Ted 2, Finding Dory), and Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live, Trainwreck) is now playing in theaters nationwide. Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) has faced some harsh opposition to rebooting the series, but the film is still expected to earn a large haul at this weekend’s box office. Picking up 30 years after the last installment, a new female crew of ‘busters reopens the original location and works to rid New York of its paranormal residents. Original actors Bill Murray (Caddyshack, Stripes), Dan Aykroyd (The Blue Brothers, Tommy Boy), Ernie Hudson (Joy of Sex, The Crow), Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Avatar), and Annie Potts (Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Toy Story) are all expected to make cameo appearances throughout the film, so it should be a pretty fun summer blockbuster. Also opening in theaters this weekend is a new drama from director Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner) called The Infiltrator. Continue reading

Today in Movie History….

Today in 1989, the eccentric and far-out vacation-gone-wrong comedy Weekend at Bernie‘s opened in theaters around the world. While critics didn’t have too many great things to say about it, movie-goers openly embraced the outlandish comedy, making it one of pop-culture’s most frequently referenced movies to-date. The script was penned by Emmy-winning screenwriter Robert Klane, who also worked as a writer on National Lampoon’s Vacation (1985) and Weekend at Bernie’s II (1993). Ted Kotcheff (Fun with Dick and Jane, Rambo: First Blood) directed the movie, which starred Andrew McCarthy (St. Elmo’s Fire, Pretty in Pink) and Jonathan Silverman (Conception, The Hungover Games) as a pair of insurance agents who are invited by their boss to spend the weekend with him at his house in the Hamptons; when they arrive to find him dead Continue reading

New Drama ‘Concussion’ With Will Smith Now Playing In Theaters

The new drama titled Concussion with Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black) is now playing in theaters nationwide. Smith stars as Dr. Bennett Omalu, the pathologist who discovered CTE after studying pro-football players and the longterm effects of receiving multiple concussions from standard game play. Writer/director Peter Landesman (Parkland, Kill the Messenger) wrote the film to explore Dr. Omalu’s discovery and the attempts of the National Football League to keep it all under wraps, based on a GQ article titled Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas. Co-starring in the film are actors Alec Baldwin (The Departed, The Good Shepard), Albert Brooks (Taxi Driver, A Most Violent Year), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights, Jupiter Ascending), and David Morse (The Green Mile, The Hurt Locker). Director Quentin Tarantino‘s new western The Hateful Eight is also available in certain theaters, so if you can be sure to check this one out as well while it’s still on big screens. Enjoy!

Filmmaker Antoine Fuqua To Direct Remake Of ‘The Magnificent Seven’

John Sturges‘s original Magnificent Seven, including Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn (1960).

Filmmaker Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) is currently working on principle photography for his upcoming remake of the classic 1960 western The Magnificent Seven. The original film was directed by legendary director John Sturges (The Great Escape, Joe Kidd) and featured an all-star cast that included Yul Brynner (The Ten Commandments), Eli Wallach (The Good The Bad and the Ugly), Steve McQueen (Bullitt), Charles Bronson (Death Wish), Robert Vaughn (Julius Caesar), Brad Dexter (Run Silent Run Deep), and James Coburn (Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid). Composer Elmer Bernstein received an Oscar-nomination for Best Musical Score (Drama/Comedy) for his work on the picture, and the film was selected for the National Film Registry by the National Film Preservation Board in 2013. John Lee Hancock (The Alamo, The Blind Side) and Nic Pizzolatto (The Killing, True Detective) are behind the new screenplay, which (like Sturges’s film) is based on the original Japanese script Shichinin No Samurai by Akira Kurosawa, Shinobu Hashimoto, and Hideo Oguni. Making up the new crew of gunslingers are actors Chris Pratt (Parks & Recreation, Jurassic World), Matt Bomer (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, In Time), Denzel Washington (The Bone Collector, Inside Man), Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black), Ethan Hawke (Brooklyn’s Finest, Boyhood), Cam Gigandet (Twilight, Easy A), and Peter Sarsgaard (FlightPlan, Jarhead). Considering the movie is not expected in theaters until next September, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it pop up at a few film festivals next year, but we’ll keep an eye out for further production information.

New Trailer For Edward Snowden Biopic Now Available

Here we have a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Oliver Stone (The Doors, Born on the Fourth of July) biopic on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The film is appropriately (and simply) titled Snowden and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) in the title role. While production has been underway for on the project for sometime, one would expect to see at least a 10-second clip of actual footage, but with this teaser all you really get are some words outlining highlights of Snowden’s life and a clever phrase to top-off the 86-second clip (even though “One Nation, Under Surveillance” is pretty clever considering the subject matter). Also starring in the film are actors Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent), Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners), Zachary Quinto (24, Star Trek: Into Darkness), Tom Wilkinson (The Patriot, Rush Hour), Rhys Ifans (Anonymous, The Amazing Spider Man), and Nicholas Cage (Con-Air, National Treasure). The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on Christmas Day, right alongside Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. We’ll keep an eye out for additional trailers as they come out. Stay tuned!

SXSW Will Host Remastered Cut Of ‘The Breakfast Club’ For 30th Anniversary Celebration

club
The Breakfast Club (from left to right): Judd Nelson (the criminal), Emilio Estevez (the athlete), Ally Sheedy (the basket-case), Molly Ringwald (the princess), and Anthony Michael Hall (the brain).

Writer/director John Hughes‘ 1980s classic The Breakfast Club will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The movie will be released on Blu-Ray next week, but fans of the film will get to see a newly remastered cut at this year’s SXSW Film Festival at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX this March. The Breakfast Club was released in February 1985 and starred Emilio Estevez (Young Guns, The Mighty Ducks), Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink), Judd Nelson (St. Elmo’s Fire, New Jack City), Anthony Michael Hall (National Lampoon’s Vacation, Weird Science), and Ally Sheedy (WarGames, Short Circuit) in the famous Saturday-detention story of “a brain, a beauty, a jock, a rebel, and a recluse” and how they found out they had a lot in common. Late actor Paul Gleason (All My Children, Die Hard) also starred in the movie as their high-strung teacher Richard (Dick) Vernon, with John Kapelos (Internal Affairs, Forever Knight) as janitor Carl. Since it’s release, The Breakfast Club has become an iconic symbol of the 1980s, reminiscent of the fashions, culture, and music of the time; the theme song “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Keith Forsey for Simple Minds was a Billboard Hot 100 #1 Single for 3 weeks in 1985. If you haven’t seen this one you should definitely check out the new Blu-Ray when it hits shelves next week; and if you’re attending SXSW this year, consider seeing the remastered cut on the big screen at the Paramount Theatre March 26-31st.

‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ Opening In Theaters This Friday

I will admit I was pretty skeptical about seeing the first Hot Tub Time Machine when it hit theaters in 2010, but when the credits came on I found myself pleasantly surprised at how hilarious it actually was. Now a second installment is scheduled to open in theaters this Friday, reuniting original cast members Rob Corddry (Semi-Pro, Harold and Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay), Craig Robinson (Pineapple Express, This Is The End), and Clark Duke (Greek, Kick-Ass) with new cast members Adam Scott (Step-Brothers, Parks and Recreation), Thomas Lennon (I Love You Man, We’re The Millers), and comedy-veteran Chevy Chase (National Lampoon’s Vacation, Caddyshack). The last time we saw the comedic bunch they had returned from the 1980s to find their friend Lou (Corddry) has made himself the creator of “Louggle” and also the lead of “Motley Lou” among other endeavors that had turned all their lives completely around. This new feature will see Jacob (Duke) and Nick (Robinson) having to go back in time to prevent Lou from being shot by a mysterious assailant. The original film’s writing/directing collaborators Josh Heald and Steve Pink (Accepted, About Last Night) are both back for the new film. Only original lead actor John Cusack is not returning for the new film. The full-length trailer is here on MADE. See the movie in theaters this weekend!
