‘Snowden’ and ‘Blair Witch’ Now Playing In Theaters

Two big blockbuster releases are opening on big-screens nationwide today. The first is the new biographical drama by director Oliver Stone (Platoon, Any Given Sunday) called Snowden, obviously about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) stars in the role as Snowden, with Shailene Woodley (Divergent, The Descendants), Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners), Zachary Quinto (Margin Call, Star Trek Beyond), and Tom Wilkinson (The Patriot, Michael Clayton) appearing in the supporting cast. The film was adapted by Stone from two books: The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man by Luke Harding and Time of the Octopus by Anatoly Kucherena. Stone has a habit of putting his own theory in his historical films, but he is definitely a worthy director, and Levitt a solid actor, so this one will probably be worth your time, especially if the rain persists! ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘The Infiltrator’ Opening in Theaters This Weekend

The long anticipated Ghostbusters reboot with Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, Spy), Kristen Wiig (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Martian), Kate McKinnon (Ted 2, Finding Dory), and Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live, Trainwreck) is now playing in theaters nationwide. Director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) has faced some harsh opposition to rebooting the series, but the film is still expected to earn a large haul at this weekend’s box office. Picking up 30 years after the last installment, a new female crew of ‘busters reopens the original location and works to rid New York of its paranormal residents. Original actors Bill Murray (Caddyshack, Stripes), Dan Aykroyd (The Blue Brothers, Tommy Boy), Ernie Hudson (Joy of Sex, The Crow), Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Avatar), and Annie Potts (Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Toy Story) are all expected to make cameo appearances throughout the film, so it should be a pretty fun summer blockbuster. Also opening in theaters this weekend is a new drama from director Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner) called The Infiltrator. Continue reading

New Comedy ‘The Boss’ Opening In Theaters This Friday

Comedy power-couple Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, Spy) and writer/director Ben Falcone (Bridesmaids, Enough Said) will be back on big screens this Friday with a new comedy called The Boss. The two co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Steve Mallory (Tammy, Identity Thief) about an industry titan who is sent to prison for insider training and runs into some old colleagues who haven’t so quickly forgotten how she screwed them over. Starring alongside McCarthy are actors Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Frozen), Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, Game of Thrones), Ella Anderson (The Giant Mechanical Man, Unfinished Business), Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Kathy Bates (Misery, Titanic). Although McCarthy comedies tend to be either hit or miss, this one will still make a fun date night for the weekend, so see it on the big screen starting this Friday, April 8th.

A new adventure/comedy titled Band of Brothers from writing/directing brothers Aaron and Adam Nee (The Last Romantic, The Geniuses) will be seeing a limited release this Friday, January 15th. Featuring brother Adam and lead actor Kyle Gallner (A Haunting in Connecticut, American Sniper) in the lead roles of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, respectively, the film finds the childhood friends as delinquent grown-ups, who, following Finn’s recent prison stint, forms the ‘band of brothers’ with their friends Joe Harper and Ben Rogers in order to finally find the treasure that has eluded them since their youth. Co-starring in the film are actors Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds, The Life Aquatic w/ Steve Zissou), Hannibal Buress (Neighbors, Daddy’s Home), Melissa Benoist (Whiplash, Supergirl), and Stephen Lang (The Men Who Stare At Goats, Avatar). The film is scheduled to officially premier at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival on June 13th, and then again in October at the Tallgrass Film Festival, New Hampshire Film Festival, and St. Lawrence International Film Festival. Director Adam McKay’s Next Film ‘The Big Short’ Set For December Release

From left to right: actors Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Ryan Gosling will co-star in The Big Short.

Writer/director Adam McKay just released news that his upcoming project, The Big Short, has been given a release date for Christmas Day 2015. The release is expected to be held at the conclusion of the Los Angeles AFI Film Festival, but I’m pretty sure a nationwide release will be happening later on in 2016. The film is based on Michael Lewis’ novel of the same name, which focuses on a group of guys who made millions when they bet against the collateralized debt obligation bubble after predicting the economic crash of 2008. Making up the all-star cast are actors Brad Pitt (Inglorious Basterds, Fury), Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, Out of the Furnace), Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy), Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Place Beyond the Pines), Steve Carell (The 40-Year Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine), Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, The Lincoln Lawyer), and Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners). Selena Gomez will also be appearing in the movie as one of the supporting characters. Director McKay co-wrote the script with screenwriter Charles Randolph (The Life of David Gale, The Interpreter). We’ll keep an eye out for a new trailer, which should be coming soon.

New Trailer For Edward Snowden Biopic Now Available

Here we have a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Oliver Stone (The Doors, Born on the Fourth of July) biopic on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The film is appropriately (and simply) titled Snowden and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) in the title role. While production has been underway for on the project for sometime, one would expect to see at least a 10-second clip of actual footage, but with this teaser all you really get are some words outlining highlights of Snowden’s life and a clever phrase to top-off the 86-second clip (even though “One Nation, Under Surveillance” is pretty clever considering the subject matter). Also starring in the film are actors Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent), Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners), Zachary Quinto (24, Star Trek: Into Darkness), Tom Wilkinson (The Patriot, Rush Hour), Rhys Ifans (Anonymous, The Amazing Spider Man), and Nicholas Cage (Con-Air, National Treasure). The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on Christmas Day, right alongside Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. We’ll keep an eye out for additional trailers as they come out. Stay tuned!

Oscar-Nominated Actor Jackie Earle Haley Will Join Cast Of ‘London Has Fallen’

olympus

With pretty much all of the original cast returning from the blockbuster hit Olympus Has Fallen, including Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman, there is a chance that the upcoming sequel London Has Fallen will be at least as action-packed as the original, but any kind of a story the writers try to produce already seems automatically cliche. Olympus Has Fallen was released in 2013 and was praised for it’s action sequences and visual effects, but the story wasn’t necessarily anything you haven’t heard before. The new movie will also bring back original actors Melissa Leo, Angela Bassett, and Radha Mitchell, who will also be joined by Oscar-nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley. Haley is most widely known by younger audiences for portraying the masked hero Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (2009), but his Academy Award-nomination came from his supporting role in director Todd Field’s Little Children (2006). The actor has also appeared in All The King’s Men (2006), Semi-Pro (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Lincoln (2012), and the recent remake of RoboCop earlier this year from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The plot will apparently involve an assassination plot that will take place at the funeral of Prime Minister, but it reads to me like this series is turning into a modern-day Escape From New York/Escape From LA sequel series: just a similar story taking place in a new location, but I guess we’ll see when it hits theaters in 2015. The film will be directed by Babak Nanafi from a script by Olympus Has Fallen writers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt and new team member Christian Gudegast.

‘Ghostbusters 3’ Has Bill Murray’s Support For A Lady-Squad Of Busters!!

busters

Since the death of original writer and actor Harold Ramis earlier this year, the fate of Ghostbusters 3 has been hanging on the edge between becoming a potential hollywood-hit or a shelved might-have-been project. Bill Murray has also been pretty reluctant to go any further with the project, especially now that Ramis is out of the picture, but a recent idea from Columbia Pictures execs did manage to raise an eyebrow. The pitch is to put director Paul Feig at the helm of an all-female squad of paranormal butt-kickers for a totally new Ghostbusters film altogether, replacing a group of saggy, old men with a group of young, sexy Ladybusters! Murray was apparently really intrigued with that idea, and even provided some suggestions to the filmmakers, including Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Identity Thief), Emma Stone (SuperBad, Zombieland), Kristen Wiig (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Her), and Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks, Grandma’s Boy). Ironically enough McCarthy and Wiig have both done work with Feig in Bridesmaids, with McCarthy also collaborating with him on Identity Thief and The Heat. Although I wouldn’t personally put McCarthy in the “sexy-squad” category, her comedy genius would definitely be a key component of a female Ghostbusters movie, and from the looks of it Murray is pretty much guaranteed not to be involved, but we’ll see what happens with final casting if we ever do get a final script written.
