This Week in Movie History…


On September 30, 1948, actor Robert Mitchum (Story of G.I. Joe, Cape Fear) was released from prison following his charge of marijuana possession. Mitchum was an up-and-coming star in Hollywood. He had received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor two years earlier for his role in Story of G.I. Joe, and appeared in four feature films in 1947, including Pursued, Crossfire, Desire Me, and Out of the Past. He also worked with director Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still, West Side Story) in a western film earlier in 1948 called Blood on the Moon. His recent string of success, however, only made his bust on September 1st that much worse.

Mitchum was found with actress Lila Leeds (Lady in the Lake, Wild Weed) and dancer Vicki Evans. With the 60s still more than a decade out, and public opinion towards marijuana still very much in the light of propaganda films like Reefer Madness (1936), the young actor feared the very public arrest would effectively end his acting career. It didn’t help that industry names like Howard Hughes (Scarface, The Outlaw), David O. Selznick (King Kong, Gone with the Wind), and the press constantly berated him during this period. But his famous bust that could have completely ended his career ended up doing just the opposite. Continue reading

When: February 26th, 27th, 28th @ 10:00PM

Minneapolis’ own Marijuana Deathsquads’ 3 night residency will begin tonight and will end on February 28th, the first night will feature Pony Bwoy while the second will feature Droppers; day 3 will serve as the release show for the POSxMDSxRMX. The event is 21+ and is only $10 for admission, these will more than likely sell out; so if you’re interested in going you should cop your tickets below NOW.

Minneapolis’ own Marijuana Deathsquads will be live at the Triple Rock Social Club tonight. The show will also showcase Plain Ole Bill & Tyte Jeff rounding out what should be a good time. MDS is still riding their release “Oh My Sexy Lord” after doing a little touring so it’ll definitely be fun to see how they’ve grown. P.O.S – We Don’t Even Live Here (MDS/RMX)


Minneapolis resident and long time provider of dope jams has done it once again. Pissed Off Stefon has teamed up with Rhymesayers ENT and his band, Marijuana Deathsquads; to bring together a remixed version of his highly celebrated “We Don’t Even Live Here”. The man, the myth has been awfully busy as of late working on music with Marijuana Deathsquads, Astronautalis (Four Fists) and his own solo stuff leaving us bracing for what’s next to come. Check out his latest project below and keep an eye on MDS as they continue to ride the success of their debut effort as well.

Adam Dunn & P.O.S link up to bring together the above visual for P.O.S’ track “Lockpicks, Knives, Bricks & Bats” which has been remixed by his band “Marijuana Deathsquads”. The “We Don’t Even Live Here” Marijuana Deathsquads remix will be available on October 22 via Rhymesayers and is shaping up to be another dope project from Minneapolis’ own P.O.S. Marijuana Deathsquads – “Oh My Sexy Lord” (Album)


Marijuana Deathsquads have released their highly anticipated project “Oh My Sexy Lord” via online stream through Spin Magazine. As you would expect the album is jam packed with insane sounds and features the likes of P.O.S, Ryan Olsen, Isaac Gale & Ben Ivascu amongst a healthy cast of other notable artists. The cover art??? yep that’s it, interesting to say the least. If you didn’t catch these guys at the Zombie Pub Crawl you’re in luck because they have announced a tour with 2 Minneapolis tour dates, November 29th & 30th at Minneapolis’ Mill City Nights. It’s almost that time, Minneapolis’ Zombie Pub Crawl is unmatched in the world and is only 1 week away. Amidst all the mayhem and drunken debauchery you may actually want to check out some dope music…because there is sure to be a lot of it. Marijuana Death Squads will be taking over The Red Sea for an afternoon of non-stop action at their own stage, this should definitely be one of the more entertaining shows over the entire weekend and you’ll only be able to see it with a Pub Crawl wrist band. Beware, even if you do have a wristband you should get their early; they’ll stop letting people in once they hit capacity.

Super late on this but we thought it would be cool to post anyway for those that haven’t seen it yet. A couple weeks ago MTV (MTVother) hit up Minneapolis to spotlight some of the local artists that make the city’s music scene so awesome. The short clip features appearances from Sean Anonymous, The Calice, Greg Grease, P.O.S, Doom Tree & Marijuana Death Squad to name a few; they also hit up a couple venues to showcase where exactly all these dope shows go down.
