Walt Disney Pictures has come a long way from making full-length animated features like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and Peter Pan. In the 21st century, the company has reinvented itself with live-action blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean, state-of-the-art computer animated films like Cars and Frozen, and adaptations of children’s literary classics like Roald Dahl’s The BFG and Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time (out in theaters this March). In recent years, Disney has expanded into more lucrative markets like comic book blockbusters (ie. Marvel comics) and, of course, the Star Wars franchise. The latest Star Wars entry, The Last Jedi, hit the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office sales barely three weeks after its US theatrical release. With a plethora of material to work with, and plenty of money coming in, one would think Disney is far passed its tipping point, but that might not be the case at all. Continue reading →
For those die hard fans of the Star Wars film series, May 4th is always a special occasion. It was on May 25th, 1977 that A New Hope, the first ever Star Wars film from writer/director George Lucas made its theatrical debut. The event marked the beginning of a new phenomenon in modern cinema, and changed the way movies were made and even thought of from then on. Drawing from inspiration from early space adventure serials, George Lucas envisioned a modern space epic using classic themes and archetypes that would forever change the movie-going experience. His company, Industrial Lights and Magic, which would go on to create Pixar Animation in the 1990s, created new methods for special effects that gave movie-goers an experience never before seen on film. To celebrate this special fan day, here is the latest trailer for the next installation in the film series, The Last Jedi, which will feature original actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher as Luke and Leia Skywalker, along with new vets Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Issac, Adam Driver, and Domhnall Gleeson. Enjoy, and May the Fourth Be With You!
*Update – this article originally stated that A New Hope was released on May 4th, 1977, hence part of the reasoning behind “May-the-Fourth Day.” A New Hope actually hit theaters on May 25th of that year, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend. My apologies for the inaccuracy!
In light of the untimely death of Carrie Fisher, movie-makers at Disney and Lucasfilm are beginning to look to Princess Leia’s future. Although Fisher has reportedly finished filming all of her scenes for the upcoming Episode VIII release this December, Leia was expected to play a much more significant part in Episode IX, which is slated for a December 2019 release. The over-arching storyline for the upcoming films included a reunion between Leia and Luke Skywalker, as well as a confrontation between Leia and Kylo Ren, who killed his father, Harrison Ford‘s Han Solo, in Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Now with Fisher gone, the fate of the character has yet to be fully realized. Continue reading →
Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Ocean’s Eleven) surprised everyone when he announced that he would be stepping away from big-screen features after 2013’s Side Effects. Recent news, however, has him coming out of retirement after spending the last few years on his work in television, like HBO’s Behind the Candelabra. Soderbergh will supposedly come back to direct his long-time friend and collaborator Channing Tatum (Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street) in a new film called Lucky Logan. No information is yet available regarding the script, and Tatum is the only confirmed cast member, although Matt Damon (The Bourne Supremacy, The Martian) was initially rumored to be starring in Tatum’s role. With a script, lead actor, and director already in place, pre-production should get underway fairly quickly, but we’ll keep you updated on further announcements.
Reactions by fans to the news that there would be a second Zoolander was pretty mixed, although it didn’t necessarily come with any real surprise considering Hollywood insists on banking on 20-year-old franchises these days. Nevertheless the rumors were true and production has been underway for sometime now, with the upcoming release for Zoolander 2 scheduled for February 12, 2016. Ben Stiller (Meet the Parents, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) and Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Midnight in Paris) are reprising their roles as fashion models Derek and Hansel, whose careers are now threatened by a new company attempting to put them out of business. Ben Stiller is once again behind the director’s chair, working from a script by himself and original Zoolander screenwriter John Hamburg (Along Came Polly, I Love You Man), along with Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2) and Nicholas Stoller (Yes Man, Get Him To The Greek). H.H. Holmes, electrical appliances, Hershey’s Mile Chocolate, and the world’s first Ferris Wheel (pictured above) were some of the highlights of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.
Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas) will once again be teaming up with his Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed star Leonardo DiCaprio for an upcoming adaptation of author Erik Larson‘s The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. The book tells the story of “America’s first serial killer,” H.H. Holmes, who during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair is believed to be responsible for the murders of at least 27 people. Holmes was hanged in 1896 for his crimes of building a hotel (now famously known as The Murder Castle) in which he would prey and torture his ‘guests’ before finally killing them, all the while disguising himself as a doctor. Although he confessed to 27 murders, the actual total is believed to be in the hundreds. During his trial, Holmes stated that he could not help his position in life as a serial killer, and that the “Evil One” was present at the bedside when he was born and stuck with and influenced him for the rest of his life. DiCaprio actually acquired the rights to the book/film six years ago, and since then production has been on hold until a solid director and writer could come onboard to fully adapt the project. Screenwriter Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Captain Phillips) is expected to adapt the book for the big screen. Stay tuned for further news updates!
Director Shane Black is still filling out the remaining cast spots for his upcoming LA-crime thriller The Nice Guys, which already has Ryan Gosling (The Ides of March, The Place Beyond The Pines) and Russell Crowe (Gladiator, Man of Steel) attached to star in the film. The story follows a private detective and his muscle-head partner (both practicing alcoholics by-the-way) in 1970s Los Angeles who investigates the suicide of a porn-star only to discover her death will uncover a massive conspiracy leading all the way back to the American automotive industry. The script comes from screenwriter Anthony Bagarozzi and director Shane Black, who has also recently added actor Matt Bomer (Flightplan, Magic Mike) to the cast list, according to Deadline. Other names currently attached to the project are Margaret Qualley, Daniel Lee, Angourie Rice, Cayla Brady, and David Born. The movie is currently scheduled for release in June 2016, so we’ve got some waiting time before we actually see a trailer or set-pics, but stay tuned for more news!
