Look For This Week’s Limited Releases In Theaters Near You

There are few interesting indie releases opening in local theaters this weekend, alongside Jordan Peele’s directorial horror debut Get Out. The first is a war-drama titled Bitter Harvest, starring Max Irons (The Host, Woman in Gold) and Samantha Barks (Les Miserables, The Christmas Candle) as lovers facing the oncoming Ukraine Genocide of 1932-1933 under Joseph Stalin. The film comes from director George Mendeluk and follows a young artists (Irons) as he works to save his love, Natalka (Barks), from being rounded up and executed as part of the death-by-starvation camps that would be made all the more famous during Hitler’s time in Nazi Germany during World War II. The script comes from writer Richard Bachynsky Hoover and co-stars Terence Stamp (Superman, Young Guns) and Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile). Continue reading

In Theaters Today….

Starting today movie-goers can see some big summer flicks opening on the big screen. First up is the new comedy Pixels with Adam Sandler (Billy Madison, Mr. Deeds), Kevin James (The King of Queens, Grown Ups), Michelle Monoghan (Eagle Eye, True Detective), Josh Gad (21, The Wedding Ringer), and Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, Game of Thrones). As I’m sure you are aware, Sandler and company will be joining up to defend Earth from an alien invasion of Nintendo characters like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. Stupid? Yes, but so was Happy Gilmore, Austin Powers, and Hot Tub Time Machine, and they were all hilarious, so don’t be too quick to judge. Also opening in theaters today is the new boxing drama from Sons of Anarchy writer Kurt Sutter, Southpaw, with Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky, Prisoners), Rachel McAdams (The Time Traveler’s Wife, Wedding Crashers), and Forest Whitaker (Phone Booth, The Last King of Scotland). This one is definitely not your easy-going comedy like Pixels, but with Kurt Sutter behind the pen and a strong cast line-up it should turn out to be a good watch. Enjoy the weekend!

David Spade Officially Returning For ‘Joe Dirt 2’ At Sony Pictures Crackle

We had followed an article back in the Spring about David Spade possibly returning for a potential Joe Dirt sequel that would be released through Sony Pictures streaming service Crackle, and now we have some official follow-up news. Now Crackle has released official word that the film will, in fact, begin filming next month and Spade will return to star, co-write, and executive produce the new film. Also back from the original is co-writer Fred Wolf, who will also take on the directing responsibilities. So even though this is another sequel project in this cinematic age of sequels and remakes, there may actually be some legitimate laughs in store for us. There is no official word on the plot for the new film, except that it will supposedly pick up right where the original left off. Happy Madison Productions will produce the film which will be filmed in Louisiana and is expected to be released sometime next year.

Peter Dinklage To Join Adam Sandler Comedy ‘Pixels’

Everybody’s favorite Lannister will be returning for the upcoming season of the HBO series Game of Thrones this Spring, but Peter Dinklage will be doing more this year than just portraying the calculative dwarf judged only by his size and not his intelligence. Dinklage will be joining comedy veteran Adam Sandler in a sci-fi adventure called Pixels. The film follows a group of video gamers who are recruited to deal with video-game villains from the 1980s who are attacking New York City. Dinklage and Sandler, as well as Kevin James and Josh Gad will all be taking a role as one of the experts recruited to deal with the situation. The film is being produced by Sandler under Happy Madison Productions and will be released by Sony Pictures. Screenwriter Tim Dowling (This Means War) has written the project from an original script by Tim Herlihy (Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy), and Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter 1 & 2) is set to direct the film. No word on a release date or additional cast members, but we’ll keep an eye out.
