Watch The Full-Length Trailer For ‘Life’ With Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds

There were a lot of raise-your-eyebrow commercials at this year’s Super Bowl, and sadly they were much more memorable than any of the traditional, so-called “hilarious” Super Bowl entries. The most controversial entries was the lengthy 84 Lumber commercial where mother and daughter encounter a giant concrete wall on the US border, and the American Petroleum Institutes praise-spot for Big Oil. In addition to the barrage of propagandized TV spots and beer commercials were a number of upcoming blockbuster movie trailers. Among them were those for The Fate of the Furious, Baywatch, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, John Wick: Chapter 2, and Transformers: The Last Knight. The most impressive movie trailer, however, came from up-and-coming director Daniel Espinosa‘s Life with Jake Gyllenhaal (Prisoners, Nightcrawler), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, The Girl on the Train), and Ryan Reynolds (Waiting, Safe House). Garth Davis’s New Indie Drama ‘Lion’ With Dev Patel Now Playing In Theaters

Australian director Garth Davis’ debut feature film Lion is now playing in theaters. Based on Saroo Brierley‘s memoir A Long Way Home, the film chronicles Brierley’s 25-year journey to reunite with his family in India after being separated from them at a young age. The film has received mostly positive reviews after premiering at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals earlier in 2016, and with award season coming up, it’s expected to earn a certain amount of recognition. Dev Patel stars as Brierley, a role similar to that he portrayed in the 2008 coming-home drama Slumdog Millionaire. Needless to say some critics have come down on the actor for his choice of playing such a similar role, but the direction of Davis is said to be outstanding, presenting an admirable, and touching drama of family and tribulation. Appearing in the supporting cast are actors Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Carol), David Wehham (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, 300), and Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Cold Mountain). Screenwriter Luke Davies (Candy, Life) adapted the script from Saroo and Larry Buttrose, and the film is distributed by the Weinstein Company. Check your local listings for showtimes near you, and be sure to catch this one in theaters while you can!

Memorable Movie Moments…

Today’s Memorable Movie Moment takes us back to 1978, for the excellent cinematography in a film called Days of Heaven. Written and directed by 3x Oscar nominee Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life), Days of Heaven is an American epic that follows a young couple, Bill and Abby, during the Expansionist era in 1916. Moving from Chicago to Texas in search of work, the two become involved in a scheme to have Abby marry a wealthy farmer who is close to death in order to gain his fortune. This, of course doesn’t go according to plan and so a dramatic conflict of jealousy and deceit ensues, loosely based on a backstory that first appeared in Alexander DumasThe Three Musketeers.

Starring Richard Gere (An Officer and a Gentlemen, Pretty Woman), Brooke Adams (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Dead Zone), and Sam Shepard (Swordfish, Black Hawk Down), the film received Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Sound, and Best Music – Original Score. Although it failed to win any of these awards, Days of Heaven did receive the Oscar for Best Cinematography for Nestor Almendros. Continue reading

B.B. King Documentary ‘The Life of Riley’ Now Available on NetFlix

Director John Brewer (Jimi Hendrix: The Guitar Hero, Nat King Kole: Afraid of the Dark) released his documentary on the late B.B. King back in 2012, but it wasn’t released in the US officially until 2014. That said, the film, titled The Life of Riley (B.B. King’s name was Riley B. King), is now available on Netflix. Narrated by Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight), the film features a plethora of musicians, friends, and family, who discuss B.B. King’s long and revolutionary career as an American bluesman, including Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Ringo Starr, Bono, Ronnie Wood, Dr. John, and Solomon Burke. B.B. King hailed from the flat delta land in Mississippi and eventually made his way to Memphis, Tennessee, where he began regular work as a blues artist. He secured a number of record deals, and when rock music took off in the ’60s, a new interest in King’s and other blues artists of his era as they had never experienced before. Continue reading

Final Trailer For Bryan Singer’s Upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Now Available

The final trailer has arrived for director Bryan Singer‘s upcoming X-Men feature, Apocalypse. If you haven’t been following, the last X-Men movie was Days of Future Past, which found Wolverine going back in time to alter the timeline of the X-Men movies to prevent the end of the world. This new timeline picks up in what I’m guessing would be at least the the late 1980s, and finds Mystique responsible for training the new generation of X-Men to fight Apocalypse, the world’s first and most powerful mutant, who happens to be immortal. Apocalypse awakes after thousands of years and begins amassing power; having seen what humanity has become, he recruits a team of powerful mutants (including Magneto) to cleanse mankind and create a new world order. Screenwriter Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes, Fantastic Four) wrote the script from a story written by himself and director Bryan Singer (X2: X-Men United, X-Men: Days of Future Past), as well as writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris (Superman Returns, Krampus). There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding acclaimed writer/director Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One over the last six months. Spielberg (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lincoln) has been dealing with various production delays, including Warner Bros. pushing the release date back to March 2018 to avoid conflicting with Disney‘s Star Wars: Episode VIII, but now with a final release date set, production should get underway relatively quickly, especially seeing as the cast has just added a lead actor. The Tree of Life and Mud actor Tye Sheridan has been selected to play the lead role of Wade Watts, a teenager in a futuristic world where the human race prefers to live in a virtual reality universe called Oasis. When the found of Oasis dies, he offers up his fortune in a treasure hunt across Oasis that Wade and an ensemble of other contestants comes out to compete in. Continue reading
