Sundance Film Festival Entries We’re Looking Forward To Seeing In Theaters

New Teaser Trailer Available For Nacho Vigolando’s ‘Colossal’ with Anne Hathaway

A new teaser trailer is available for Nacho Vigolando‘s Colossal with Anne Hathawy (The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar). The film is currently playing at the Sundance Film Festival and is slated for a domestic release this April 7th. Colossal is a comedic action-thriller with an interesting concept. It follows Gloria, a New Yorker forced to move back to small town America after her boyfriend throws her out for her eccentric party-every-night lifestyle. Upon moving home, Gloria gets a job working at the local bar and continues her excessive drinking, until one morning she wakes up and discovers (in a state of disbelief) that Seoul, South Korea had been terrorized by a giant, Godzilla-like monster the night before. As the phenomenon progresses, she slowly comes to suspect a strange link between herself and the Korean-terrorizing monster.

Strange? Corny? Yes. Hilarious? Yes. Worth seeing? Judging even by the short teaser trailer, definitely! Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigolando (Timecrimes, Extraterrestrial) wrote and directed the film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The cast includes Dan Stevens (A Walk Among the Tombstones, Beauty and the Beast), Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers), Tim Blake Nelson (Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, Lincoln), Austin Stowell (Whiplash, Bridge of Spies), Rukiya Bernard (Supernatural, Accidental Obsession), and Agam Darshi (2012, Sanctuary). Check back for additional trailers, and remember this one hits theaters on April 7th!

‘The Comedian’ and ‘The Book of Love’ Seeing Limited Release This Weekend

Two independent films are seeing a limited theatrical release this weekend. The first is a comedy from Oscar-winning director Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentlemen, Ray) titled The Comedian. Robert De Niro stars as an aging insult comic who must learn to adapt his art for the modern world of technology, YouTube, and social media. De Niro is backed by an outstanding supporting cast including Leslie Mann (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Danny DeVito (Hoffa, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally, Analyze This), Harvey Keitel (Mean Streets, Reservoir Dogs), Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie), and Patti Lupone (Witness, City by the Sea). Despite having an impressive cast and director, the film has received incredibly harsh reviews from critics, who complain the potential of the cast and director are overshadowed by asinine, old-school comedy. Judging from the trailer, however, it looks like an entirely crowd-pleasing, worthy-of-the-times comedy, so don’t leave it off of your list just because of a few critics with no sense of humor! The Comedian is expected to see an expanded release in early February, so look for it in theaters for a good Valentines date! Continue reading

New ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Trailer Available Now

This holiday season will see another Star Wars film dominating the release schedule. Unlike last year’s Star Wars: Episode 7 – The Force Awakens, whose fan anticipation was the highest since Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace in 1999, Rogue One has already been plagued by script rewrites and unscheduled reshoots. This was in part owing to the lack of direct relevance to any of the original series characters, but also to fan polls that suggested disappointment with earlier plot lines. Nevertheless, production has pushed on and the second trailer for the new film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was just released this week. Rogue One is based on a story by John Knoll (Star Wars: Episode 6 – Return of the Jedi, Avatar) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli, After Earth), which was adapted to a script by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Golden Compass) and Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Ultimatum, House of Cards) about the Rebel Alliance’s plan to steal the plans to the Death Star, laying the grounds for the epic trilogy that follows with Star Wars: Episode 4 – A New Hope (1977). Director Gareth Edwards (In the Shadow of the Moon, Godzilla) helmed the project with actors Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, The Amazing Spider-Man), Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt, Casino Royale), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Jason Bourne), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines), Alan Tudyk (I Robot, Dodgeball), and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, Lee Daniel’s The Butler). Oscar nominee James Earl Jones (Field of Dreams, The Lion King) is also returning to provide the voice of Darth Vader, whose presence in the film will likely hold the biggest intrigue for fans of the series. Check out the new trailer right here on MADE, and enjoy the weekend!

This Week In Movie History….

Director Wes Craven went down in cinematic history for his iconic career in the horror film industry. Craven is behind such famous franchises as A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, which of course brought the unforgettable characters of Freddy Kruger and Jason Voorhees to movie-goers worldwide. This was not, however, the reaction upon the release of a much earlier and grittier horror film Craven got behind in the early ’70s. The Last House on the Left was released on August 30, 1972. It was one of Craven’s first pairings with horror producer Sean S. Cunningham, and serves as a staple of cult horror films typical of the era. The film’s harshly realistic and graphic subject matter surrounds a pair of teenage girls who are abducted by a gang of escaped convicts and are subjected to rape, disembowelment, castration, and much more. New Sequel ‘Jason Bourne’ Opening In Theaters This Weekend

After nine years away, Jason Bourne is returning to the big screen in the fifth installment in the Bourne series. The new film is simply titled Jason Bourne and reunites original lead Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting, The Departed) with Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass (United 93, Captain Phillips). Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You, Silver Linings Playbook) is also rejoining the cast as CIA operative Nicky Parsons. She and Damon will be joined on screen by an all-star cast, including Oscar winners Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) and Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive, No Country For Old Men). Actors Riz Ahmed (The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Nightcrawler), Ato Essandoh (Blood Diamond, Django Unchained), and Scott Sheperd (Side Effects, Bridge of Spies) are also starring in the new adventure that seeks to uncover the true history behind Bourne’s (aka David Webb) mysterious past. Check Your Local Listings For This Week’s Limited Releases

Along with Papa Hemingway in Cuba, there are some great limited releases hitting theaters this weekend. First off is a new drama from actor-turned-director Jason Bateman (Arrested Development, Horrible Bosses), Nicole Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut, The Interpreter), Christopher Walken (Pulp Fiction, Catch Me If You Can), and Catherine Hahn (Step Brothers, Parks and Recreation) titled The Family Fang, which is based on the book by Kevin Wilson. The film follows a brother and sister as they return home in search of their famous parents, who have gone missing. Seems fairly promising, but you can be the judge.

Next up is an Italian film titled The Wait (L’attesa) from director Piero Messina (La Porta, Terra) and starring internationally known actress Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, Godzilla) about a mother who unexpectedly meets her future daughter-in-law at a villa in Sicily and waits with her for her son to arrive, concealing some dark secret the entire time. ‘Batman Vs Superman’ Continues To Break Box-Office Records

DC Comic‘s latest big screen endeavor, Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, from director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen), is continuing to do incredibly well at the domestic and international box office, despite the terrible reviews from critics, and a pretty decent body of fans. The film has grossed more than $420 million worldwide, but it’s not the enormous success that should have fans and studio execs worried, its what lies ahead that could be potentially hazardous. The problem is that DC and the production studios royally fucked up in terms of their plan to unveil their Justice League movies. Unlike Marvel, who succeeded in introducing all of the Avengers characters in film-worthy, individual projects, DC left Batman vs Superman, not only with the task of serving as a sequel to Man of Steel (2013), but also of introducing the other Justice League characters, including Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), the Flash (Ezra Miller), and Aquaman (Jason Momoa).
