Sunday night saw a decent amount of new movie trailers played during the 50th celebration of America’s favorite athletic pastime, the Super Bowl. The two will share writing credits with screenwriter Christopher Rouse (The Italian Job, Greenzone), who has also worked on The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Legendary Italian Composer Ennio Morricone Scoring Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Hateful Eight’ and Terrence Malick’s ‘Voyage of Time’

Composer Ennio Morricone.

2015 will mark the years legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone makes his return to the western film genre after a 40-year absence. Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming western The Hateful Eight, out in theaters this December, will feature an original composition by Morricone, who has composed scores for such westerns as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly (1966), Once Upon A Time in the West (1968), Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), and A Genius, Two Partners, and a Dupe (1975). Morricone will be following up his western composition with the long-awaited drama Voyage of Time from writer/director Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life). Malick’s film features actors Brad Pitt (Fightclub, Inglorious Basterds) and Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth, Blue Jasmine) as narrators as he takes the audience on a visual and musical journey to examine the universe. According to Wild Bunch, “Voyage of Time is a celebration of the earth, displaying the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse. This film examines all that went to prepare the miracle that stands before us now. In words and with music, we are encouraged to view it with gratitude and awe. Science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet—all come together in Malick’s most original film to date.” This will be the first time Malick has worked with Morricone since his film Days of Heaven (1978); he has spent the last 40 years of his career scoring such films as Leon: The Professional (1981), Once Upon A Time in America (1984), and The Untouchables (1987). Voyage of Time has been held back from release for various reasons for the last few years, but hopefully it will be available in theaters in Fall 2016. Stay tuned for more news.

New Biographical Drama ‘The 33’ Opening In Theaters This Friday

A new biographical drama titled The 33, based on the book Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar, is opening in theaters this Friday. The book and film chronicle the Chilean mining accident in 2010, in which 33 miners were trapped underground and survived together for a total of 69 days. Starring in the film are actors Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro, Once Upon A Time in Mexico), Rodrigo Santoro (300, Focus), Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, Godzilla), James Brolin (Traffic, Catch Me If You Can), Jacob Vargas (Get Shorty, Jarhead), and Oscar Nunez (The Office, The Italian Job). Patricia Riggen (Under the Same Moon, Girl in Progress), who received top remarks at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival for her film Family Portrait, directed the project from a screen story by Jose Rivera (Trade, Letters to Juliet). You can see the trailer here on MADE. The movie opens in theaters this Friday.

NWA Biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Now Playing In Theaters

After much anticipation and even more promotional hype, the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton is now playing in theaters nationwide. Directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, The Italian Job) and penned by screenwriters Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center), Straight Outta Compton chronicles the rise of the iconic rap group NWA during the mid-1980s. The group’s songs of hardship and racial prejudice in the streets of Compton prompted a national awareness to the ongoing issues still fueled by racial divides between the law and the streets, and revolutionized the hip hop genre for generations to come. Starring in the film as the members of NWA are O’Shea Jackson Jr. (as his father, Ice Cube), Corey Hawkins (Iron Man 3, Non-Stop) as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell (Contraband, Broken City) as Eazy-E, Neil Brown Jr. (Fast & Furious, Battle Los Angeles) as DJ Yella, and Aldis Hodge (Die Hard With A Vengeance, The East) as MC Ren. Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti (Lady in the Water, 12 Years A Slave) also appears in the film as NWA manager Jerry Heller. Reviews have been mixed thus far: some have expressed that the story is exaggerated at points, while other truths have been completely omitted from the story. But one thing that all the critics seem to agree on are the actors’ performances. As with any film adaptation of a real-life story, the plot will tend to focus on the perspective of certain members and not touch upon others, but I’m hoping, for the most part, that this will be a fairly accurate representation of the true account. Original members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube served as producers on the project. So if you don’t have any plans this weekend (and even if you do), I would make a point of seeing this one on the big screen. It’s bound to be the biggest movie release this summer. Enjoy!

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Opening In Theaters This Friday, May 15th 2015

After three decades away from the big screen, everyone’s favorite road-warrior, Mad Max, is finally coming back with a bang! This Friday the new installment, Fury Road, from original series writer/director George Miller (St. Vincent’s Revue Film, The Witches of Eastwick) will be out in theaters. Taking over for Mel Gibson (Braveheart, The Patriot) is Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) as Mad Max, with Charlize Theron (Monster, The Italian Job), Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, X-Men: Days of Future Past), and series veteran-actor Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max, Moby Dick) making up the supporting cast. As I understand it this will be a legitimate fourth installment, and not a remake or series reboot (like what is possibly happening with the Indiana Jones series. Fury Road will once again find Max wandering the desolate post-apocalypse Australian desert, when he joins forces with Furiosa (Theron) and agrees to help her cross the desert in order to find her homeland and escape an tyrant who would imprison her as a slave. Here’s the trailer one more time on MADE. Be sure to check it out on the big screen this weekend!

Furious 7 Opening In Theaters April 3rd, 2015

This April will see the final installment of the iconic Fast and Furious series with original actor Paul Walker from Universal Studios. This will be director James Wan‘s (Saw, The Conjuring) first-step into the action-film series that will reunite cast members Vin Diesel (XXX, The Chronicles of Riddick), Dwayne Johnson (Walking Tall, Hercules), Jordana Brewster (The Faculty, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), and Michelle Rodriguez (S.W.A.T., Avatar), plus the whole string of actors that have appeared regularly throughout the series. Also joining the cast for this upcoming installment is Jason Statham (The Transporter, The Italian Job), who made an uncredited appearance in Fast and Furious 6, and Golden Globe-nominee Kurt Russell (Escape From New York, Death Proof). This seventh installment in the series has been making news since Paul Walker’s untimely death in 2013; the production was delayed by 6 months, the script was tweaked for Walker’s absence, and even Walker’s brothers came aboard to help complete some of his scenes with the help of CGI technology, so needless to say this movie has been through some hurdles already. Check out the trailer here on MADE. The opens near you this April 3rd.
