Today In Movie History…

murch

Today in movie history, revered editor and sound engineer Walter Murch was born in New York City in 1943. Murch first gained momentum in the film industry working with Oscar-winner Francis Ford Coppola on his film The Rain People (1969) before going on to work with George Lucas on THX1138 (1971) and American Graffiti (1973). He then furthered his professional relationship with Coppola working on films like The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Conversation (1974), the latter which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. His first major contribution to film came on Coppola’s iconic Vietnam drama, Apocalypse Now (1979), for which he won his first Oscar. Murch used a multi-track recording system to create new sounds that invoked both physical tension and psychological drama against the back-drop of Coppola’s war epic. Murch went on to serve as both sound and picture editor for numerous films, winning double Oscars for The English Patient in 1996 for Best Editor and Best Sound Editor. His work with Coppola continued throughout his career, working on films like The Godfather Part III (1990) and Tetro (2009); he also received a double Oscar-nomination in 1990 for The Godfather Part III and Ghost with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. New Trailer For ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Features First Appearance Of Harrison Ford And Chewbacca

Back during the Holiday 2014 season director J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Super 8) released a teaser trailer for his upcoming and long-awaited sequel to Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now with production well underway and the Christmas 2015 release date slowly (but surely) approaching, Abrams has graced us with a new trailer, revealing some impressive cinematic backdrops linking this sequel to George Lucas‘ original series, and bringing back some familiar series-faces to the screen. Making cameo’s in the new trailer is the droid, R2-D2 (who has appeared in every Star Wars film since the original in 1977), and Han Solo and his Wookie companion, Chewbacca, portrayed once again by Harrison Ford (Blade Runner, Clear and Present Danger) and Peter Mayhew (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back). Actor Kenny Baker (The Elephant Man, Time Bandits) is also back to play R2-D2, along with Mark Hamill (Slipstream, Midnight Ride), Carrie Fisher (The Blues Brothers, When Harry Met Sally), and Anthony Daniels (Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith). Abrams co-wrote the new film with screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Bodyguard) for Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm Ltd. Fans will have to wait until December 18th, but I’m sure there will be plenty of trailers released before then to appease their appetites!

Actor Leonard Nimoy, who portrayed Spock in the original Star Trek television series in the 1960s, died this week at the age of 83 in Los Angeles. Nimoy began his career as a regular guest on popular TV shows in the 1950s and early 60s, including The Untouchables, Get Smart, and The Twilight Zone. His breakthrough role came when he was noticed on an episode of The Lieutenant, which earned him the role of Spock in Star Trek, which he would be bound to for the rest of his life. Nimoy portrayed the character of Spock virtually for the rest of his career; he starred in the original TV series and the motion-picture series, even directing the third and fourth films, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The actor was also an avid photographer and studied at UCLA, later publishing several controversial photography collections titled The Shekhina Project and another called The Full Body Project. His final acting role was as scientist William Bell on the Fox-network drama Fringe, but he also made a special appearance in director J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 re-boot film Star Trek, and again in Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). Nimoy leaves behind his wife Susan and his son and daughter Adam and Julie; may he rest in peace.

Final Installment In ‘The Hobbit’ Series Opens In Theaters This December

The third and final installment in Peter Jackson‘s new film trilogy The Hobbit is scheduled to open in theaters this December 17th. Subtitled The Battle of the Five Armies, the movie will close out the over-extended film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s pre-Lord of the Rings adventure that follows the hobbit Bilbo Baggins after he is recruited by the wizard, Gandalf, to assist Thorin and his band of dwarfs in reclaiming a lost treasure from the ancient dragon Smaug. The first two installments were subtitled An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug, and brought back from Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy actors Ian McKellen (Gandalf-X2: X-Men United, The Da Vinci Code), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel-The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Orlando Bloom (Legolas-Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), Christopher Lee (Saruman-Sleepy Hollow, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith), Hugo Weaving (Elrond-The Matrix, V for Vendetta), and Ian Holm (older Bilbo-Alien, The Fifth Element). Jackson adapted the screenplay for The Hobbit movies with returning Lord of the Rings collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and writer/director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy). Some cinemas will be playing all three Hobbit films this holiday season to celebrate the Battle of the Five Armies release, and there are rumors flying around all over the web that a teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be played during the previews for The Hobbit. So if you are a fan of Jackson or Tolkien by all means go and catch the final film on the big screen this holiday season. You can watch the trailer right here on MADE.
