This Week In Movie History…

friendly-persuasion

On September 20, 1956, director William Wyler‘s Friendly Persuasion was released in theaters in the United States. Based on the book by Jessamyn West, the story revolves around a Quaker family in 1862, whose faith and belief in non-violence is tested when Confederate troops come sweeping through their land and the family must decide whether to fight or to remain complacent. The film was written by screenwriter Michael Wilson (A Place in the Sun, Planet of the Apes), and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenwriting. It wasn’t until 2002, however, that Wilson would receive legitimate recognition for his work on the film. Continue reading

Toronto International Film Festival Headliners ‘Trumbo’ and ‘Spotlight’ Opening In Theaters This Friday

Movie-goers will have no shortage of great movies to see this weekend. Friday will not only have the chance to see The Peanuts Movie and the new James Bond installment, Spectre, but fans of festival-circuit films will also be able to see two major picks from this years’ Toronto International Film Festival. The first is the biographical drama from director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) with Golden Globe winner Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Godzilla) titled Trumbo. The film follows the famous screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who along with 300 other writers and filmmakers in Hollywood was blacklisted by the federal government during the Red Scare era of the American 1950s. Trumbo is, perhaps, one of the more interesting cases; he continued to write scripts under anonymous surnames while he was blacklisted and even won Oscars for his work on Roman Holiday (1953) and The Brave One (1956). Making up the supporting cast are actors Diane Lane (Unfaithful, Man of Steel), Helen Mirren (The Queen, The Hundred-Foot Journey), Louis C.K. (Louie, American Hustle), Elle Fanning (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Maleficent), John Goodman (The Big Lebowski, Argo), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Pawn Sacrifice, Steve Jobs), in a script adpated by John McNamara (Jericho, Aquarius) from the book Dalton Trumbo by author Bruce Cook. The second Toronto International Film Festival contender opening in theaters this week is also a biographical drama titled Spotlight. This film comes from Oscar-nominated writer/director Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent, Million Dollar Arm) and chronicles the investigative journalist team at the Boston Globe that uncovered the scandal in the Catholic Church revolving around child molestation and cover-up deals within the Archdiocese. Co-written by screenwriter Josh Singer (Fringe, The Fifth Estate), the film stars Mark Ruffalo (Shutter Island, The Avengers), Michael Keaton (Batman, Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Rachel McAdams (Wedding Crashers, Midnight in Paris), Liev Schreiber (Defiance, Salt), John Slattery (Mad Men, Flags of our Fathers), and Stanley Tucci (Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Hunger Games), and also received high marks at the 2015 Venice Film Festival. Either of these will make great picks to see on the big screen, so be sure to get to the movie theaters in the next week or so to see them while they are still available! The trailer for Trumbo is available here on MADE.

Recent Changes In Film Release Date Schedules

The film industry is always coping with conflicting schedules and merging franchises that are controlled by separate production companies. That being said, release dates for films that are currently in production should always be taken with a grain of salt. Dates are bound to change, new productions of higher profitability, and even seasons of the year all play big roles in determining when a film actually hits theaters.Shanghai, for example, is just now being released in the United States, even though it was filmed and released overseas close to five years ago. Regardless of what factors play into it, here are some updates to some film release schedules you might want to be aware of.

1. Warner Bros. has just announced that Christopher Nolan‘s next directorial project (his first since Interstellar was released back in December 2014) has been give a release date for July 21, 2017. No details have yet been made on the plot or who will star in the film, but it’s good to know the Inception and Dark Knight series director is getting back to work.

2. Oliver Stone‘s upcoming biopic on former NSA-employee turned traitor Edward Snowden, appropriately titled Snowden, has been pushed back from a Christmas release to an unspecified release date in 2016. We’ll keep an eye out for an exact date.

3. The new Western (yes, there is another one coming out!) with Oscar-winner Natalie Portman (Leon: The Professional, Black Swan) titled Jane Got A Gun, which was also expected in theaters sometime this Holiday season, has also been pushed back for a February 2016 release date. The script for this project has already been delayed while the script was re-written, but with any luck the new date should be the last delay for director Gavin O’Connor (Miracle, Warrior).

Stay tuned for more updates!

New Trailer For ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Features First Appearance Of Harrison Ford And Chewbacca

Back during the Holiday 2014 season director J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Super 8) released a teaser trailer for his upcoming and long-awaited sequel to Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now with production well underway and the Christmas 2015 release date slowly (but surely) approaching, Abrams has graced us with a new trailer, revealing some impressive cinematic backdrops linking this sequel to George Lucas‘ original series, and bringing back some familiar series-faces to the screen. Making cameo’s in the new trailer is the droid, R2-D2 (who has appeared in every Star Wars film since the original in 1977), and Han Solo and his Wookie companion, Chewbacca, portrayed once again by Harrison Ford (Blade Runner, Clear and Present Danger) and Peter Mayhew (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back). Actor Kenny Baker (The Elephant Man, Time Bandits) is also back to play R2-D2, along with Mark Hamill (Slipstream, Midnight Ride), Carrie Fisher (The Blues Brothers, When Harry Met Sally), and Anthony Daniels (Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith). Abrams co-wrote the new film with screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Bodyguard) for Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm Ltd. Fans will have to wait until December 18th, but I’m sure there will be plenty of trailers released before then to appease their appetites!

Sarob – Holiday

holiday cover

At the end of 2014, Ohio artist Sarob dropped his first single, “Holiday”, ahead of his album the down. Produced by El Redd, the record has a calm vibe fitting Sarob’s vocals and flow like a glove. Reminiscent of those early/mid 90s jams of yesteryear, “Holiday” can be considered Sarob’s anxiety therapy, a record that helps him convey the feelings he’s often trapped behind. The 20 year old artist has a long way to go, but “Holiday” is definitely a step in the right direction; check out the record below.
