MGM And Paramount Pictures Preparing Remake Of 1959 Epic ‘Ben-Hur’

ben-hur

A remake of director William Wyler‘s 1959 epic Ben-Hur is currently in the works at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Paramount Pictures, and the producer’s and director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) are working hard getting the pre-production check list in order. Thus far the cast includes actors Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire, American Hustle), Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight), Toby Kebbell (Wrath of the Titans, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), and Nezanin Boniadi (Iron Man, The Next Three Days), with Rodrigo Santoro (Love Actually, 300: Rise of an Empire) making an appearance in the role of Jesus Christ. The story of Ben-Hur comes from the 19th-century book by Lew Wallace titled Ben Hur: A Tale of Christ, which tells the story of a Jewish prince who is betrayed by his Roman friend and sent into years of enslavement, only to regain his freedom and return to seek his vengeance. The original movie starred Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, and Stephen Boyd and won 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor (Heston), Best Director (Wyler), Best Cinematographer (Robert Surtees), and Best Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith). The new movie is expected to be in theaters sometime in 2016, so we’ll be following it for a while; in the meantime you should definitely check out the original; you can find it available on both DVD and Blu-Ray disc.

Early Draft Of Next Bond Installment ‘S.P.E.C.T.R.E.’ Leaked In Sony Pictures Hack

Bond

Earlier in the month we found out that private files, including film scripts, reels, and documents including emails between company employees and executives, were stolen from Sony Pictures by a group of computer hackers that call themselves the Guardians of Peace. The group has threatened to “ruin” the company if their upcoming James Franco and Seth Rogen comedy, The Interview, is not pulled from release this coming Christmas Day. The G.O.P. has already released a number of documents including emails between executives at the company covering everything from upcoming movie plans, celebrity secrets, medical records, racial slurs, and unbalanced pay between actors and their female counterparts. Sony discovered Monday that an early version of the screenplay for their next James Bond installment with Eon Productions Ltd., S.P.E.C.T.R.E., was among the material stolen and leaked in the cyberattack, and they were quick to give the public a friendly warning about copyright infringement. This statement was posted on the James Bond website Saturday, December 13th, by Eon Productions Ltd:

EON PRODUCTIONS, the producers of the James Bond films, learned this morning that an early version of the screenplay for the new Bond film SPECTRE is amongst the material stolen and illegally made public by hackers who infiltrated the Sony Pictures Entertainment computer system. Eon Productions is concerned that third parties who have received the stolen screenplay may seek to publish it or its contents. The screenplay for SPECTRE is the confidential information of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Danjaq, LLC, and is protected by the laws of copyright in the United Kingdom and around the world. It may not (in whole or in part) be published, reproduced, disseminated or otherwise utilised by anyone who obtains a copy of it. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Danjaq LLC will take all necessary steps to protect their rights against the persons who stole the screenplay, and against anyone who makes infringing uses of it or attempts to take commercial advantage of confidential property it knows to be stolen.”

Pretty serious shit. Principle photography for the new movie began on December 8th with Daniel Craig returning as Bond, and the movie is scheduled for theatrical release this November 6, 2015. We’ll keep you updated on anymore leaked information.

Oscar-Nominated Actor Jackie Earle Haley Will Join Cast Of ‘London Has Fallen’

olympus

With pretty much all of the original cast returning from the blockbuster hit Olympus Has Fallen, including Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman, there is a chance that the upcoming sequel London Has Fallen will be at least as action-packed as the original, but any kind of a story the writers try to produce already seems automatically cliche. Olympus Has Fallen was released in 2013 and was praised for it’s action sequences and visual effects, but the story wasn’t necessarily anything you haven’t heard before. The new movie will also bring back original actors Melissa Leo, Angela Bassett, and Radha Mitchell, who will also be joined by Oscar-nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley. Haley is most widely known by younger audiences for portraying the masked hero Rorschach in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen (2009), but his Academy Award-nomination came from his supporting role in director Todd Field’s Little Children (2006). The actor has also appeared in All The King’s Men (2006), Semi-Pro (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Lincoln (2012), and the recent remake of RoboCop earlier this year from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The plot will apparently involve an assassination plot that will take place at the funeral of Prime Minister, but it reads to me like this series is turning into a modern-day Escape From New York/Escape From LA sequel series: just a similar story taking place in a new location, but I guess we’ll see when it hits theaters in 2015. The film will be directed by Babak Nanafi from a script by Olympus Has Fallen writers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt and new team member Christian Gudegast.
