Director Luc Besson Announces New Pablo Escobar Biopic With Javier Bardem And Penelope Cruz

Director Luc Besson (The 5th Element, Taken) recently announced at the Cannes Film Festival that his production company, EuropaCorp, is currently working on developing a new Pablo Escobar biopic with Oscar-winners Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men, Skyfall) and Penelope Cruz (Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides). Titled Escobar, the screenplay will be based on the book Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar by author Virginia Vallejo, but the movie is still extremely early in production (which is not really a bad thing considering Benicio Del Toro’s Escobar: Paradise Lost is still awaiting worldwide release) and Besson will not be directly involved with this project himself. He is currently in the process of getting Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets off the ground while also serving as producer on Warrior’s Gate (2015) and The Lake (2016), so writing and directing duties for Escobar are expected to fall on Fernando Leon Aranoa (A Perfect Day, Familia). Stay tuned for more news.

French filmmaker Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, The Transporter) is currently in production on his new sci-fi project titled Valerian. Besson is still working on the full cast list, as well as his own script adaptation, based on the comic books by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres, but thus far actors Cara Delevingne (Anna Karenina, Suicide Squad) and Dane DeHaan (Lincoln, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) have both been signed on for the film. The full working title for the project is Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and will follow the time-traveler Valerian and his sidekick Laureline on an all new adventure. We still have some time before we actually see this one in theaters, but a tentative French release is scheduled for 2017. We’ll bring you more details as they unfold over the next few months. Stay tuned!

New Drama ‘Child 44’ With Tom Hardy And Gary Oldman Opens In Theaters This Friday, April 17th

The new dramatic thriller from director Daniel Espinosa (Easy Money, Safe House), Child 44, is opening in theaters this Friday, April 17th. Featuring The Dark Knight Rises co-stars Tom Hardy (Inception, Lawless) and Oscar-nominee Gary Oldman (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element), Child 44 follows a military officer in Stalin-era Russia who becomes disgraced when he begins an investigation into a series of mysterious child murders while the state claims this sort of crime is said to be non-existent. ‘Game of Thrones’ Author George R.R. Martin’s ‘In The Lost Lands’ Getting Big-Screen Adaptation With Milla Jovovich

Author George R.R. Martin‘s Game of Thrones is currently awaiting it’s fifth season on HBO this April, but some another series of his titled In The Lost Lands, is currently on the drawing boards for a big-screen adaptation with actress Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil). The film will follow a trio of three interconnected short-stories by Martin that will be scripted and directed by German filmmaker Constantin Werner (Dead Leaves, The Pagan Queen), and also feature actor Justin Chatwin (Shameless, War of the Worlds) in one of the supporting roles. Jovovich plays a sorceress who is sent to the Lost Lands to obtain the power of shape-shifting, and her primary plot-line comes to directly affect the other two stories that take place across time. No word on when we can expect to see this one in theaters, but considering the enormous success Game of Thrones has experienced with audiences, we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for progress on this one.

Final Installment In ‘Taken’ Series Opening This January 9th

We were all pretty surprised to see that Liam Neeson would be appearing in a sequel to his 2008 action thriller Taken, but seeing as they made a 2nd I guess they may as well go ahead and make a 3rd. Yes, a 3rd. Liam Neeson will grace the screen one more time this January as ex-CIA agent Bryan Mills, who has a wife and daughter that, for some reason, always seem to be the target of a kidnapping plot. This time out Mills finds himself framed for the murder of his ex-wife, and must ensue on a new mission to clear his name by finding the true killer before the authorities track him down. Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker (Phone Booth, Lee Daniel’s The Butler) will be joining the supporting cast along with Maggie Grace (Taken, The Fog) and Famke Janssen (GoldenEye, X-Men) returning as daughter Kim and ex-wife Lenore. Screenwriting/directing duo Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element), who wrote both Taken and Taken 2, penned the new script for director Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3, Taken 2). Check out the new trailer here on MADE; the new movie comes out January 9th. Also opening on January 9th is director Paul Thomas Anderson‘s upcoming LA-noir drama Inherent Vice with Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin, as well as Ava DuVernay’s Civil Rights drama Selma with David Oyelowo and Tim Roth, so be sure to mark your calendar for January 9!

Final Installment In ‘The Hobbit’ Series Opens In Theaters This December

The third and final installment in Peter Jackson‘s new film trilogy The Hobbit is scheduled to open in theaters this December 17th. Subtitled The Battle of the Five Armies, the movie will close out the over-extended film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s pre-Lord of the Rings adventure that follows the hobbit Bilbo Baggins after he is recruited by the wizard, Gandalf, to assist Thorin and his band of dwarfs in reclaiming a lost treasure from the ancient dragon Smaug. The first two installments were subtitled An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug, and brought back from Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy actors Ian McKellen (Gandalf-X2: X-Men United, The Da Vinci Code), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel-The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Orlando Bloom (Legolas-Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), Christopher Lee (Saruman-Sleepy Hollow, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith), Hugo Weaving (Elrond-The Matrix, V for Vendetta), and Ian Holm (older Bilbo-Alien, The Fifth Element). Jackson adapted the screenplay for The Hobbit movies with returning Lord of the Rings collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and writer/director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy). Some cinemas will be playing all three Hobbit films this holiday season to celebrate the Battle of the Five Armies release, and there are rumors flying around all over the web that a teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be played during the previews for The Hobbit. So if you are a fan of Jackson or Tolkien by all means go and catch the final film on the big screen this holiday season. You can watch the trailer right here on MADE.

‘Lucy’ Hits Theaters

Regardless of whether or not you can take the plot seriously, watching anything with Scarlett Johansson is worth the time! Her new movie Lucy (co-starring Morgan Freeman) hits theaters today, and while the film may not be turning heads as far as Oscar-nominations go, I think it’s safe to say the action-flick will still be entertaining for audiences. The story revolves around a woman who has the capacity to utilize 100% of her brain, allowing her to unlock the secrets of the universe and enable her to stop time, levitate objects, and, in other words, supersede the laws of physics and the natural world. As unbelievable as the story may be, it’s not really surprising to see Luc Besson behind the camera; the filmmaker is known for his elaborate action flicks like The Transporter, Taken, and Leon: The Professional, but he also occasionally delves into the sci-fi genre with movies like The Fifth Element. You can check out the trailer here on MADE, then go see it in theaters this weekend.
