Ridley Scott’s ‘The Martian’ With Matt Damon Now Playing In Theaters

Fresh off its last festival stop at the Toronto International Film Festival, the latest blockbuster from Oscar-winner Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus), The Martian, is now playing in theaters across the country. Based on the book by author Andy Weir, the film features an all-star cast led by Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity, The Departed), including Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, A Most Violent Year), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Jeff Daniels (Speed, The Newsroom), Michael Pena (End of Watch, Fury), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Game of Thrones), Kate Mara (House of Cards, Captive), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Children of Men, 12 Years A Slave). Screenwriter Drew Goddard (Cloverfield, World War Z) adapted the script from Weir’s book about an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars and must survive against all odds in order to return to his family on Earth. Watch the trailer one more time here on MADE, then see it on the big screen this weekend!

Director Craig Zobel’s ‘Z For Zachariah’ Now Playing In Theaters

Opening in theaters today is a new post-apocalyptic drama from director Craig Zobel (Great World of Sound, Compliance) titled Z For Zachariah. The film comes from an adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien‘s 1975 novel of the same name by screenwriter Nissar Modi (Breaking at the Edge) about a trio of survivors living in a post World War III environment who find themselves entwined in an intense love-triangle as the only known survivors of the nuclear fallout. Making up the three-member cast line-up is Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (American Gangster, 12 Years A Slave), and actors Chris Pine (Unstoppable, Star Trek: Into Darkness), and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus). The film was seen earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received an Official Selection nod, and critics have praised it both for Tim Orr’s work on the cinematography (Pineapple Express, Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World) and for the music score by composer Heather McIntosh (The Rambler, Honeymoon). Also opening today is a new music-oriented drama with Zac Efron titled We Are Your Friends, which follows Efron as a DJ attempting to climb to a position of fame in the Electric Dance Music scene, while also juggling with a forbidden romance. This one comes from writer/director Max Joseph, who is best known for his documentary series Good. I’m not expecting this one to be focused so much on the forbidden love factor as it is to the world of professional DJs, but I’m also not a huge Zac Efron fan, so I’ll leave this one up to you to decide. Enjoy the weekend!

New Trailer For ‘The Martian’ With Matt Damon Now Available

We’ve been hearing little bits and pieces of Matt Damon‘s upcoming project The Martian for some time now, and finally after months of waiting we have a new trailer!! The Departed and Bourne-series actor will be leading an all-star cast that includes Jessica Chastain (Lawless, A Most Violent Year), Kate Mara (Iron Man 2, Transcendence), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones), Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber, Speed), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (American Gangster, 12 Years A Slave) in the story about an astronaut who is left for dead on Mars by his crew and must find a way to survive and make Earth aware of his survival. This will be Damon’s second outing as an astronaut following his smaller role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar last year (which co-star Jessica Chastain also starred). Oscar-winner Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) directed the project from an adaptation of author Amy Weir’s novel by screenwriter Drew Goddard (Lost, World War Z). On a personal note, both Lost and World War Z sucked hardcore in terms of everything, so having Mr. Goddard’s name attached to this film doesn’t really give me high hopes for the story, but considering Ridley Scott is behind the camera, we may still have a movie that’s worth going to see. The trailer is now available here on MADE. Look for the movie in theaters this November 25th.

Director Billy Ray To Adapt The Secret In Their Eyes With Chiwetel Ejiofor And Gwyneth Paltrow

El Secreto de Sus Ojos (translated “the secret in their eyes”) first came to theaters in 2009 from Spanish director Juan Jose Campanella and won the Oscar in 2010 for Best Foreign Language Film. Since then writer/director Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Breach), who received an Oscar nomination last year for his screenplay for Captain Phillips, has been trying to get a remake, or rather an English-speaking version of the film made. Denzel Washington was due to take a role in the film with Warner Bros. at one point in 2011, but that has since fallen through and now there is word from Deadline that Chiwetel Ejiofor and Gwyneth Paltrow may be taking on roles in the film. El Secreto de Sus Ojos followed the story of a former legal counselor, who, haunted by unresolved casework and a forbidden love with a superior, writes a novel to cope with his unresolved affairs. The English/American version would follow the same general story but the character would be adapted to an MI-5 agent and would take place in Boston. Billy Ray is thus far set to write the script and direct the project as well, with production beginning this Fall.

Actor Ralph Fiennes recently announced that filming on the next Bond film is expected to begin later this year. Fiennes will appear in the film as ‘M,’ as well as Daniel Craig reprising the role of Bond, and Sam Mendes will also return to the series to direct the new project, which as-of-now has not been given a title. The last installment, Skyfall, also featured Naomi Harris in the role of Moneypenny and Ben Whishaw as Q, and now the producers are looking to cast Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave, Children of Men) for the role of the new villain. Skyfall also featured Oscar winning actor Javier Bardem as the villain, so Ejiofor would be an appropriate choice for the new role. The film is being penned by screenwriter John Logan but no details on the plot are known at this point. Bond 24 is scheduled for release in November 2015, so we should be hearing more news coming out soon.
