Today Marks 50th Anniversary of Beatle’s ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’

sgt peppers lonely hearts club band

Today (May 26th) marks the 50th anniversary celebration of The Beatle’s revolutionary album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The LP was the first released by the band following their retirement from touring after their final performance at Candlestick Park in 1966. Although The Beatles had already begun a steady transition from being a more traditional pop-rock group with albums like Rubber Soul and Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s has been hailed as their ultimate creative masterpiece, followed closely perhaps by 1969’s Abbey Road. Released at the beginning of the Summer of Love, it set a new precedent for what a rock and roll record could be. The concept behind the album began following the exhaustion the group experienced after the whirlwind of Beatlemania. Paul McCartney came to Lennon, Starr, and Harrison with an idea that they would record an all new album under an alternative persona, which would free them from the weight of being the Beatles and usher in a fresh wave of musical creativity. Sgt. Pepper’s not only ushered in a new era for the Beatles; it also marked the beginning of the psychedelic rock movement that would see new groups like The Doors, Pink Floyd, and Jefferson Airplane begin to climb the pop music charts. Now, 50 years later, Sgt. Pepper’s is known not only for its conception and importance to 60s rock (and music in general), but also for the history of its production. Continue reading

New Trailer For Edward Snowden Biopic Now Available

Here we have a new teaser trailer for the upcoming Oliver Stone (The Doors, Born on the Fourth of July) biopic on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The film is appropriately (and simply) titled Snowden and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) in the title role. While production has been underway for on the project for sometime, one would expect to see at least a 10-second clip of actual footage, but with this teaser all you really get are some words outlining highlights of Snowden’s life and a clever phrase to top-off the 86-second clip (even though “One Nation, Under Surveillance” is pretty clever considering the subject matter). Also starring in the film are actors Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent), Melissa Leo (The Fighter, Prisoners), Zachary Quinto (24, Star Trek: Into Darkness), Tom Wilkinson (The Patriot, Rush Hour), Rhys Ifans (Anonymous, The Amazing Spider Man), and Nicholas Cage (Con-Air, National Treasure). The movie is scheduled to open in theaters on Christmas Day, right alongside Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. We’ll keep an eye out for additional trailers as they come out. Stay tuned!

thestand4rd – Doors (Top 14 Albums of 2014)

Stand

This was the track that started it all. Back in April, thestand4rd took to Soundcloud in a surprise move releasing their first track ever, “Doors”. Minneapolis’ hip hop scene was shaken to it’s foundations with a lot of people’s music forced to take a back seat, similarly to their album release, thestand4rd have proved time and time again that you should re-think matching their release dates. As a group, this one record served as a successful test; but solo, each of them continued to buzz harder than ever. Some cried 1 hit wonders, others bashed behind closed doors, but those in the know, knew that these guys were for real. Check out “Doors” below and be on the look out for more.

THESTANDARD – Decisions

Minnesota’s music scene is beginning to transcend the local parameters, it’s almost like with every coming month, comes a new wave of creative energy and collaboration. In the case of THESTANDARD, Bobby Raps, Spooky Black, Psymun & Allan Kingdom have joined forces to create what can only be called a super group. People from out of state might not understand, but these dudes are all nice in their own rights. It appears that they’ve decided to follow up their initial release “Doors” with a new track entitled “Decisions”, not sure where this is going; but we can only hope that a full project is well on the way. Kick back and listen to their newness below and keep an eye out for more from THESTANDARD.

Oliver Stone Aiming To Make MLK Biopic With Jamie Foxx

king

Oliver Stone has developed a well known reputation as a director who sticks to real-life influence. He has brought such films as The Doors, JFK, Nixon, Platoon, Alexander, and World Trade Center to the big screen, and won the Oscar in 1990 for Best Director for Born On The Fourth Of July. So it’s no surprise that his next project would be a biopic about the late Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., potentially starring Jamie Foxx in the lead role as King. Foxx proved himself an agile and noteworthy actor in 2004 with his portrayal of Ray Charles in the biopic by Taylor Hackford, and with the King family supporting the film (much as Ray Charles and his family was behind the Taylor Hackford project), Stone may get to make his movie sooner than he thought. Several attempts have already been made to get a King biopic underway, including a film from The Bourne Ultimatum and Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass, but stories and plot lines have been rejected and the King family is clearly more in favor of a film that shines a positive light on the famous figure instead of a script that may be more “honest” in some aspects of his life. I’ve never been a huge fan of Stone’s films, but Foxx would make a good choice to portray King. Forrest Whitacker’s name has also been tossed around, so we’ll see what happens.
