MADE Review: The Revenant

Oscar-winning writer/director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, Birdman or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is following up his fantastic work on Birdman with a new dramatic western of love, survival, and revenge titled The Revenant. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Lawless), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Will Poulter (We’re The Millers, The Maze Runner), and Forrest Goodluck (Gaming), the film follows a frontiersman who is brutally attacked by a grizzly bear while on an expedition in the 1820s Rockies, and is left for dead by members of his team. Against all odds, he survives the attack and sets out for revenge against the men who killed his son. The story is inspired by true events that appear in the book by author Michael Punke. Inarritu and Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Children of Men, Gravity) again deliver excellent camera work on the film, and the cinematography and the scale of the film are truly epic. Leonardo DiCaprio (as usual) delivers an outstanding performance, and equally impressive is that of Tom Hardy, who could easily get an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. In showing the hardship and the struggle that DiCaprio’s character encounters in the wilderness, Inarritu also delivers an impressive display of graphic effects, including an insane mauling by a grizzly bear and a night spent in the innards of a dead horse. The only complaint I can find with the film is that it could have been 15-20 minutes shorter: the middle section of the film, while vividly entertaining, begins to feel a little long. The ending, however, is excellent, leaving the audience with a sense of closure for the story, combined with a sense of wonder surrounding the final fate of the character, a stylistic approach that is all Inarritu. I would definitely recommend seeing The Revenant when it opens in theaters this Friday, January 8, 2016.

‘Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens’ Now Playing In Theaters Nationwide

After months and months of anticipation, fans can finally rejoice! As of today, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is now playing in theaters nationwide, and if you haven’t already secured a ticket, you might have to wait at least a week or two before braving the storm of people waiting in line out the door. Director JJ Abrams (Mission Impossible 3, Super 8) took leave of his Star Trek obligations in order to direct the film, which reunites original stars Mark Hamill (Commander Hamilton, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), Harrison Ford (Blade Runner, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc), and Carrie Fisher (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, The Blues Brothers) with an all new generation of actors, led by Daisy Ridley (Blue Season, Scrawl), John Boyega (Junkhearts, Imperial Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year), Domhnall Gleeson (Unbroken, Ex Machina), Adam Driver (While We’re Young, This Is Where I Leave You), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey). The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Oscar-winning screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, The Accidental Tourist) worked on the new project’s script with director Abrams and fellow Oscar-winner Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3), about a new threat to peace and justice in the galaxy that occurs 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi concluded. Little more needs be said; all I ask is that you not be an asshole and spoil the plot for everybody in ear-shot of your conversations! Enjoy.

New Trailer For Upcoming Western ‘The Revenant’ Now Available

It seems that Westerns are continuing to make a comeback to big screen productions. The last decade has seen titles like 3:10 to Yuma, The Lone Ranger, True Grit, No Country For Old Men, Django Unchained, and Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Christmas release The Hateful Eight bring in big hauls at the box office, and now 3x Oscar-winning writer and director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel, Birdman) will be releasing his latest feature this January. The film is titled The Revenant and is based on the novel by Michael Punke about real-life frontiersman Hugh Glass, who was abandoned and left for dead by members of his own team after being mauled by a bear, and set out on a mission of survival and vengeance across the uncharted American wilderness during the 1820s. Starring in the lead role is Oscar-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street), with Tom Hardy (Lawless, Mad Max: Fury Road), Will Poulter (We’re The Millers, The Maze Runner), and Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina, Unbroken) making up the supporting cast. A new trailer is now available here on MADE. The film will see a limited theatrical release this Christmas Day, with a nationwide extension supposedly happening in January. Given the cast and the writer/director behind the project, I think this will probably be one of the year’s best releases, so mark this one down on your Must-See list.

New Sci-Fi Drama ‘Ex Machina’ Opening In Theaters April 10th, 2015

Writer/directorAlex Garland‘s upcoming sci-fi drama, Ex Machina, will see a limited release this April 10th. This will be the directorial debut for Garland, who is known for penning such projects as The Beach and 28 Days Later, but after seeing the trailer I don’t think that’s going to be a problem that will affect the film’s popularity among movie-goers. Starring Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Unbroken), Alicia Vikander (A Royal Affair, Son of a Gun), and Golden Globe nominee Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year), the film follows a young programmer who wins the chance to visit his CEO’s private retreat, only to find he has secretly been selected to participate in a strange experiment involving artificial intelligence and the beautiful robot that contains it. This one definitely looks like a pretty crazy mind-fuck, so I would definitely consider putting this on the Must-See list, if not for the story but for the special effects you can see in the trailer. You can see the trailer one more time here on MADE, then be sure to see this one while it’s still on the big screen.

New A.I. Drama ‘Ex Machina’ Opening In Theaters This April 10th

The new futuristic A.I. film from director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) titled Chappie is opening in theaters this March 6th, but next month, movie-goers will get to see a different kind of A.I. story that doesn’t necessarily involve revolution or all-out-war between man and machine. The new film is titled Ex Machina and comes from a script by film writer/director Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later), who also directed. Ex Machina follows the story of a young programmer, Caleb, who wins a week vacation to the company-CEO’s private mountain retreat only to find his reason for being there is to take part in an experiment involving A.I. encased in a robot resembling a beautiful human-woman. Sounds a bit reminiscent of Her with Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson back in 2013, but this time we’re dealing with an actual robot that not only brings an erie human quality to the film, but also allows for the great special-effect sequences you can see in the trailer. Starring in the film are actors Alicia Vikander (A Royal Affair, The Fifth Estate), Domhnall Gleeson (About Time, Unbroken), and Golden Globe-nominee Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year). This one really looks like it will be worth the watch, so definitely consider adding it to your must-see list; in the meantime you can check out the new trailer here on MADE. The film is scheduled for release April 10, 2015.

Watch The New ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Teaser Trailer

With filming completed on the new Star Wars sequel, The Force Awakens, director J.J. Abrams has released a new teaser trailer just in time for the holiday new-release previews. There’s not a lot of hints regarding the whole plot-line, but there are some pretty cool sequences that are included and you can definitely get a feel of how Abrams has approached the material with his own style of filmmaking. The movie is not scheduled for release until next December, so Abrams presumably has a lot of work still to do in the editing and special effects departments, but the trailer alone gives a pretty good idea of what to expect. Original actors Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford are all returning for the new film, which picks up years after the conclusion of Return of the Jedi, which was released in 1983. Also joining the original cast for the film are actors Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Domhnall Gleeson (True Grit, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones, The Zero Theorum), Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Inside Llewyn Davis), and John Boyega (Junkhearts, 24: Live Another Day), who we actually see pop up in the trailer. The script was written by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who also wrote The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), plus the first Indiana Jones installment Raiders of the Lost Art (1981). Other returning cast members from the film series are Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), and Kenny Baker (R2-D2). Enjoy!

Director J.J. Abrams has finally released the official cast list for the long-anticipated seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise, which will follow George Lucas’s original trilogy. Returning from the original series are actors Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), as well as the droid characters Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker (C-3P0 and R2-D2), who have appeared in every Star Wars film since the original in 1977. Peter Mayhew will also reprise the role of Chewbacca, Han Solo’s Wookie co-pilot. Among the new generation of actors joining the space saga are John Boyega (Junkhearts, Half of a Yellow Sun), Daisy Ridley (Blue Season, Scrawl), Oscar Issac (Inside Llewyn Davis, Robin Hood), and Adam Driver (J. Edgar, Lincoln), although their respective roles are still unclear at this point. Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, True Grit), and veteran actor Max Von Sydow (The Exorcist, Shutter Island) will also be taking roles in the new film. The film is scheduled to begin shooting next month, so production is truly underway now. We’ll keep an eye out for more news.
