New Family Drama ‘The Levelling’ Opening In Select Theaters This Weekend

Those of you not dying of nostalgia over the release of Power Rangers this weekend should check out a new indie drama titled The Levelling, which is also opening in select theaters. The film is the first feature-length presentation from writer/director Hope Dickson Leach (Ladies in Waiting, Morning Echo), following a woman named Clover who returns home after her brother’s death by suicide to find the family farm devastated by a recent flood and her father hardly recognizable to the man she left behind all those years ago. As she becomes reacquainted with her home town and learns of the goings on in the years of her absence, she and her father begin to develop a mutual understanding as they come to terms with her brother Charlie’s death and the events that drove him to take his own life. The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and received award nominations at both the British Independent Film Awards and the London Film Festival. Ellie Kendrick (An Education, Game of Thrones) and David Troughton (Sharpe’s Rifles, Dance with a Stranger) lead the cast as Clover and her father Aubrey.

In addition, the new comedy with Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, True Detective) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park, Wild) titled Wilson, about an estranged husband and wife who set out to find and connect with their long lost daughter, is also opening in select theaters this weekend. Be sure to check your local listings for showings near you. Enjoy the weekend!

Weinstein Company Drama ‘Tulip Fever’ Pushed Back to 2017

Producer Harvey Weinstein of the Weinstein Company has pushed back national release of his long anticipated drama Tulip Fever, based on the popular novel by Deborah Moggach, to a February 2017 release. The film has already seen several release delays; it was filmed back in 2014 and has since made no debuts at any of the film festival circuits or limited releases here in the States or elsewhere. Now, however, Weinstein seems to have settled on a post-Valentine’s Day release, going up against God Particle from producer J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Sleepless with Jaimie Fox (Ray, Collateral) and Michelle Monaghan (Gone Baby Gone, True Detective). Starring Oscar winners Alicia Vikander (El Machina, The Danish Girl) and Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained), the film follows an artist who falls for a married woman he is hired to paint in portrait in the midst of the tulip frenzy of 17th century Amsterdam. Character Actor Abe Vigoda Passes At The Age of 94

tessio

Character actor Abe Vigoda passed away earlier this week at the age of 94. According to his daughter, Carol Vigoda Fuchs, the actor died peacefully and had not been suffering from any illnesses. Vigoda spent years working in the New York theater scene before he was cast as the mafia hitman Sal Tessio in Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Godfather. Following the huge success of The Godfather, and The Godfather Part II, Vigoda was cast as Detective Phil Fish in 1975 on the show Barney Miller, which ran until 1982 and earned Vigoda three Emmy Award nominations in 1976, 1977, and 1978 respectively. Ironically enough, the announcement of his death re-sparked an old controversy about whether or not the actor was still alive: a false report stating that Vigoda had died was published in 1986, igniting a controversy among movie-goers and fans as to whether or not the actor was really still alive or had actually died. A website dedicated to Google searches for ‘Is Abe Vigoda really dead?’ was updated this week to respond ‘Yes.’ Regardless of his questionable death status, Vigoda’s roles and contributions to film will be remembered by his co-stars like Al Pacino (Serpico, Heat), Robert Duvall (Apocalypse Now, The Judge), and Hal Linden (Barney Miller, Out To Sea). Abe, you will be missed!

Principle photography is currently underway on a new biographical drama from Oscar-nominee Rob Reiner (The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men), titled LBJ. Leading the film as President Johnson is fellow Oscar-nominee Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, True Detective), with Jennifer Jason Leigh (Road To Perdition, The Machinist), C. Thomas Howell (E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, The Amazing Spider-Man), Bill Pullman (Spaceballs, Independence Day), Jeffery Donovan (Changeling, Burn Notice), and Richard Jenkins (The Indian in the Cupboard, Step Brothers). The plot is expected to range from 1959 to 1964, covering Johnson’s time in the Senate, Vice-Presidency under John F. Kennedy, and his subsequent term as President after Kennedy’s assassination, coming from a script by Joey Hartstone (Project Runway). Johnson faced several large issues during his time as President, including the beginning of the Vietnam conflict and the Civil Rights Movement. We’ll keep an eye on this one as it progresses, but as of now the film does not have an exact release date. Stay tuned.

In Theaters Today….

Starting today movie-goers can see some big summer flicks opening on the big screen. First up is the new comedy Pixels with Adam Sandler (Billy Madison, Mr. Deeds), Kevin James (The King of Queens, Grown Ups), Michelle Monoghan (Eagle Eye, True Detective), Josh Gad (21, The Wedding Ringer), and Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, Game of Thrones). As I’m sure you are aware, Sandler and company will be joining up to defend Earth from an alien invasion of Nintendo characters like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man. Stupid? Yes, but so was Happy Gilmore, Austin Powers, and Hot Tub Time Machine, and they were all hilarious, so don’t be too quick to judge. Also opening in theaters today is the new boxing drama from Sons of Anarchy writer Kurt Sutter, Southpaw, with Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky, Prisoners), Rachel McAdams (The Time Traveler’s Wife, Wedding Crashers), and Forest Whitaker (Phone Booth, The Last King of Scotland). This one is definitely not your easy-going comedy like Pixels, but with Kurt Sutter behind the pen and a strong cast line-up it should turn out to be a good watch. Enjoy the weekend!

Watch The New Trailer For ‘Pixels’ With Adam Sandler And Kevin James

You’ve probably started to see TV-spots for the upcoming comedy Pixels with Adam Sandler (Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy) and Kevin James (The King of Queens, Grown-Ups) on your flat-screens. We first caught wind of this project about a year ago when it was announced that Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye, True Detective) and Peter Dinklage (The Station Agent, Game of Thrones) would also be joining the cast, and with the movie still scheduled to open in theaters this July 24th, the crew is now full-swing in post production. Harry Potter and Home Alone director Chris Columbus is leading the project with a script from Timothy Dowling (Just Go With It, This Means War) and Tim Herlihy (Mr. Deeds, Grown-Ups 2), written from a short by Patrick Jean. If you’ve seen the TV-spots then you get the premise: video-game heros like Donkey Kong and Pac Man come to Earth as an alien species and begin to go “Godzilla” on the human race. Pretty hilarious idea; so much so that I think it may actually be worth seeing in theaters. Enjoy!

Stepping into the producer’s role will be none other than iconic musician John Legend and his production company Get Lifted Film Co., as well as Sony Pictures. The role of Dumas has yet to be determined, and Fukunaga will first be adapting another novel for the big screen before this one really gets rolling. Stay tuned for more updates.

Last week we told you that Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage would be joining the cast of Adam Sandler’s upcoming comedy adventure, Pixels, from director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter 1 & 2, Home Alone). The film will follow a group of experts who are recruited to protect New York City from a group of invading 1980’s video-game characters. Adam Sandler and Kevin James will be part of the cast, plus Dinklage and Josh Gad, and now it has also been announced that actress Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye, Gone Baby Gone) will also be joining the cast. Monaghan has just wrapped up the premiere season of True Detective on HBO with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and is currently filming The Best of Me with director Michael Hoffman. Pixels is still in the pre-production period and is expected to be released some time in 2015. We’ll keep an eye out for more cast members as they fill in further in production.
