Baltasar Kormakur’s New Drama ‘Everest’ Opening In Theaters September 25th

Director Baltasar Kormakur (Contraband, 2 Guns) will see his latest drama titled Everest open on big screens across the country this September 25th. Working from a screenplay by Oscar-nominee William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Miserables) and Oscar-winner Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty, Slumdog Millionaire), the film follows an expedition to the top of Mount Everest that quickly becomes a nail-biting fight for survival when a snow storm hits the mountain. Starring in the film are actors Jason Clarke (Lawless, Terminator: Genisys), Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3, No Country For Old Men), John Hawkes (American Gangster, Lincoln), Robin Wright (Forrest Gump, House of Cards), Emily Watson (Red Dragon, War Horse), Keira Knightly (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Imitation Game), Sam Worthington (Avatar, Terminator Salvation), and Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky, Prisoners). Seeing as William Nicholson and Simon Beaufoy, who combined have an incredibly impressive catalogue of work, including Nell (1994), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), 127 Hours (2010), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), and Unbreakable (2014), on top of having an excellent cast, I’m sure this one will be much better than everybody is anticipating. The trailer is available here on MADE, so remember to mark your calendars!

NWA Biopic ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Now Playing In Theaters

After much anticipation and even more promotional hype, the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton is now playing in theaters nationwide. Directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, The Italian Job) and penned by screenwriters Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center), Straight Outta Compton chronicles the rise of the iconic rap group NWA during the mid-1980s. The group’s songs of hardship and racial prejudice in the streets of Compton prompted a national awareness to the ongoing issues still fueled by racial divides between the law and the streets, and revolutionized the hip hop genre for generations to come. Starring in the film as the members of NWA are O’Shea Jackson Jr. (as his father, Ice Cube), Corey Hawkins (Iron Man 3, Non-Stop) as Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell (Contraband, Broken City) as Eazy-E, Neil Brown Jr. (Fast & Furious, Battle Los Angeles) as DJ Yella, and Aldis Hodge (Die Hard With A Vengeance, The East) as MC Ren. Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti (Lady in the Water, 12 Years A Slave) also appears in the film as NWA manager Jerry Heller. Reviews have been mixed thus far: some have expressed that the story is exaggerated at points, while other truths have been completely omitted from the story. But one thing that all the critics seem to agree on are the actors’ performances. As with any film adaptation of a real-life story, the plot will tend to focus on the perspective of certain members and not touch upon others, but I’m hoping, for the most part, that this will be a fairly accurate representation of the true account. Original members Dr. Dre and Ice Cube served as producers on the project. So if you don’t have any plans this weekend (and even if you do), I would make a point of seeing this one on the big screen. It’s bound to be the biggest movie release this summer. Enjoy!

2 Guns

guns

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are getting good marketing for their upcoming flick 2 Guns. The plot revolves around two federal agents (Washington and Wahlberg) who are given the task of investigating each other only to find out they have been set up by the mob! Director Baltasar Kormakur, who worked with Wahlberg on the 2012 hit Contraband, is directing the film, which is due out August 2nd. Finally a summer flick getting good marketing that has no connection to any other movie. Refreshing to see a new idea.
