leia

In light of the untimely death of Carrie Fisher, movie-makers at Disney and Lucasfilm are beginning to look to Princess Leia’s future. Although Fisher has reportedly finished filming all of her scenes for the upcoming Episode VIII release this December, Leia was expected to play a much more significant part in Episode IX, which is slated for a December 2019 release. The over-arching storyline for the upcoming films included a reunion between Leia and Luke Skywalker, as well as a confrontation between Leia and Kylo Ren, who killed his father, Harrison Ford‘s Han Solo, in Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Now with Fisher gone, the fate of the character has yet to be fully realized. Continue reading

Director Ava DuVernay Set To Direct New Disney Adaptation of ‘A Wrinkle In Time’

ava

Acclaimed director Ava Duvernay (The Middle of Nowhere, Selma) has just been hired by Disney Motion Pictures to helm a new adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s 1963 Newbery Medal-winning novel, A Wrinkle In Time. The book will be adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Jennifer Lee (Frozen, Zootopia). Chances are you read this one in elementary school, about a young girl who travels to a 5th dimension in order to find her scientist father, who disappeared while working on a mysterious government project called a tesseract. The film is still very early in production, and DuVernay also has another script on her plate from DreamWorks and screenwriters Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly (Safety Not Guaranteed, Jurassic World) titled Intelligent Life. This one is about a UN worker in a department dedicated to representing humanity in the event of contact with alien life, who falls for a woman who turns out to be a real alien. No word yet as to which film will end up being made first, but both definitely sound pretty interesting, although A Wrinkle In Time is definitely long overdue for a quality film adaptation. Either way, we’ll let you know about upcoming schedule announcements.

New Dramas ‘Black Mass’ and ‘Sicario’ Now Playing In Theaters

At last the day has come for Johnny Depp fans that have been dying to see him return to some more gritty and adult-oriented work to jump for joy! The new drama Black Mass from director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace), which chronicles the relationship between notorious Boston-mobster Whitey Bulger and FBI special agent John Connolly that saw much of Bulger’s competition taken off the streets, is now playing in theaters across the country. Reviews, thus far, have been somewhat surprising: Depp’s performance has been praised as a triumphant return to more in-depth characters, but the film, itself, plays out more like a gangster-parody movie. Either way it remains one of the year’s most highly anticipated films. Also appearing in the supporting cast are actors Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Exodus: Gods and Kings), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Fifth Estate, The Imitation Game), Dakota Johnson (The Social Network, 21 Jump Street), Kevin Bacon (Apollo 13, Mystic River), Peter Sarsgaard (Flightplan, Jarhead), and Adam Scott (Step Brothers, Parks & Recreation). Also playing in theaters is the new drama Sicario from director Denis Villeneuve (Enemy, Prisoners), with actors Emily Blunt (The Five-Year Engagement, Edge of Tomorrow), Josh Brolin (American Gangster, No Country For Old Men), and Benicio Del Toro (The Usual Suspects, Traffic), which revolves around the War on Drugs along the US-Mexican border. I think it’s a fair bet that your money will be well spent seeing either of these, so put both titles on your ‘Must-See’ list and enjoy the weekend!

‘Black Mass’ Opening In Theaters This September

Oscar-nominee Johnny Depp (Blow, Public Enemies) has recently been working on new installments for the Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland franchises, plus dealing with his girlfriend being locked up in Australia for smuggling canine’s into the country. But his next big project with director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace) is currently gearing up for the big screen this September. Black Mass, which we’ve been following for some time now, stars Depp as Whitey Bulger, perhaps the most violent and notorious gangster in the history of South Boston. The film comes from the book Black Mass: The Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill and chronicles Bulger’s partnership with FBI agent John Connolly, who long delayed the bureau’s capture of Bulger by focusing his attention on Bulger’s competitors. The movie has undergone several changes over the last year, including director Barry Levinson and actor Tom Hardy being attached at various points in the production. Making up the final supporting cast include actors Dakota Johnson (21 Jump Street, Fifty Shades of Grey), Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Exodus: Gods and Kings), Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Imitation Game), Kevin Bacon (Apollo 13, Mystic River), Adam Scott (Step Brothers, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), and Peter Sarsgaard (Jarhead, Flightplan). The book by Lehr and O’Neill was adapted for the big screen by Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Get On Up) and Mark Mallouk (Rush, A Walk Among The Tombstones). ‘Jurassic World’ Sequel Planned For 2018 Release

world

Yesterday Universal pictures announced that a sequel to their latest record-breaking hit Jurassic World is being planned for release on June 22nd, 2018. The new film will once again have original Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg back as an executive producer, serving alongside World executive producer and director Colin Trevorrow (Reality Show, Safety Not Guaranteed). Trevorrow will also come back to write the new script with Jurassic World writer Derek Connolly (Safety Not Guaranteed, Monster Trucks), but there is no confirmed word on whether or not he will be directing again. Actors Chris Pratt (Parks & Recreation, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Lady in the Water, The Help) will be back for the new film, but no other actors from World have thus far been confirmed to be coming back. Stay tuned for more news!

Director Colin Trevorrow’s ‘Jurassic World’ Opening In Theaters This Friday June 12th

After months and months of anticipation for the long-awaited sequel to Steven Spielberg‘s 1993 classic, Jurassic World is finally opening in theaters this Friday, June 12th. Directed by Colin Trevorrow (Reality Show, Safety Not Guaranteed) from a script by himself and fellow screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (The Relic, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Derek Connolly (Safety Not Guaranteed, Monster Trucks), the film picks up on Isla Nublar 22 years after the disaster of the original movie with a new fully-functioning park that after 10 years of successful operation is losing visitors and whose directors decide to put a new attraction in-place to draw more crowds with horrific and “unforseen” consequences. Starring in the film are actors Chris Pratt (Parks & Recreation, Guardians of the Galaxy), Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help, 50/50), Ty Simpkins (Insidious, Iron Man 3), Nick Robinson (Melissa & Joey, The Kings of Summer), Jake Johnson (21 Jump Street, Let’s Be Cops), Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Mood Indigo), and DB Wong (Executive Decision, Jurassic Park). While the special effects look pretty interesting, after having seen the latest TV-spot with Chris Pratt, the story is at risk of being extremely weak, not at all living up to the standards of the original, but I won’t jump to judge it before seeing it. You can see the full length trailer again here on MADE, then catch it on the big screen June 12th.

This new film takes place 22 years after the original Jurassic Park events, with a fully-functioning theme park operating on Isla Nublar in which tourists come to see the dinosaur inhabitants John Hammond (the late David Attenborough) originally envisioned for the island. Mark Wahlberg Eyeing Martin Scorsese To Direct Feature-Film Adaptation Of ‘Boardwalk Empire’

empire

Now that the popular HBO gangster-drama Boardwalk Empire has come to an end, producer Mark Wahlberg is looking to take the material to the big screen. In a recent interview, Wahlberg expressed interest in having Empire’s producer Martin Scorsese direct a film adaptation of the series, the only question is would Scorsese be interested? The legendary filmmaker already trying to balance a full schedule; he is currently filming a rock n’ roll series for HBO, wrapping up production on an upcoming Bill Clinton documentary, and is also expecting to produce and direct a biopic about actor/singer Frank Sinatra, so needless to say he is quite busy. Considering the way that Boardwalk ended on HBO (I won’t give anything away), a film adaptation would most likely involve a different perspective on the already existing story, or a continuation of the story after the fact. Whatever the case we’ll have to wait to see if this gets picked up. Mark Wahlberg currently has a new season of Wahlburgers coming out, and the film-adaptation of his other popular series, Entourage, with original actors Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara, and Kevin Dillon, is expected in theaters on June 5, 2015. Stay tuned.
