Special 20th Anniversary Screenings of Luc Besson’s ‘The Fifth Element’ Showing This May

In 1997, writer/director Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, The Family) released his cult sci-fi classic The Fifth Element, featuring an all-star cast led by Bruce Willis (Die Hard, Pulp Fiction), Milla Jovovich (Dazed and Confused, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Chris Tucker (Friday, Rush Hour), and Ian Holm (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Day After Tomorrow). Set in the 23rd century, the film follows a cab driver in New York City whose life changes when he inadvertently picks up Leeloo. After being contacted by a strange priest, who informs him of Leeloo’s importance in defeating a great Evil, the three of them embark on a mission to save Leeloo and the universe at large.

The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound Effects/Editing and, over the years, has developed a massive cult following. It also furthered the career of Milla Jovovich, who went on to star in such films as Zoolander and the Resident Evil film series. As a special 20th Anniversary celebration, The Fifth Element will be playing in select theaters across the country on May 14th and 17th. Memorable Movie Moments…

This week’s Memorable Movie Moment takes us back to director John Sturges‘ 1963 war-era classic, The Great Escape. Set in a POW camp in Nazi Germany, the film follows the true story of a group of Allied prisoners who sought to accomplish the biggest jail break ever conceived, scattering more than 200 Allied troops across the country in an effort to divert Nazi war efforts on finding and re-capturing the escaped soldiers. The Great Escape is famous for a number of reasons. It featured an all-star cast including Steve McQueen (The Cincinnati Kid, The Sand Pebbles), James Garner (The Rockford Files, The Notebook), Richard Attenborough (Jurassic Park, Elizabeth), Charles Bronson (Once Upon A Time In The West, Death Wish), Donald Pleasance (Halloween, Escape From New York), and James Coburn (The Muppet Movie, In Like Flint), several of which were actual POWs with the Allied Forces during World War II. It also set and broke a number of on-screen records, ranging from the scale of the production (an entire replica of a real-life German POW camp was built in which to shoot the film) to the impressive array of stunts. Don Cheadle To Begin Production On Miles Davis Biopic ‘Miles Ahead’ This Week

cheadle

A few weeks ago we informed you that an IndieGogo campaign had been launched to raise money for a new biopic on iconic jazz musician Miles Davis with actor Don Cheadle. The goal was to raise $90,000 in just a month for the production to begin in July, and with the cut-off date quickly approaching production will now be moving forward in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cheadle recently did an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the film, which will focus on the period of Davis’ career around the release of his 1969 rock-jazz album In A Silent Way. Ewan McGregor, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Emayatzy Corinealdi are also set to take roles in the film, which has been in development now for the better part of a decade. You can see a picture of Cheadle in full costume as Davis above. If all goes as planned we could see the film hit theaters as early as 2015, so keep your eyes open for more news on this one.
