Director Spike Lee’s New Drama ‘Chi-Raq’ Opening In Theaters Today

Director Spike Lee‘s update of Aristophanes’ play Lysistrata set in the violent streets of modern-day Chicago titled Chi-Raq is opening in theaters today. Set primarily in Chicago’s Southside, the film utilizes modern gang violence to tell Aristophanes’ tale of a group of women who decide to keep sex from their male counterparts in order to encourage them to stop the street violence that is destroying their homes and families. Lee adapted the screenplay with writer Kevin Willmott (The Battle for Bunker Hill, Jayhawkers), which features actors Nick Cannon (Bobby, Day of the Dead), Teyonah Parris (How Do You Know, They Came Together), Wesley Snipes (Blade, Demolition Man), Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers, Unbreakable), John Cusack (The Raven, Hot Tub Time Machine), and Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls, Lullaby). For Hudson, the film carries a unique weight: she has lost three family members to the gun-violence dividing the streets of Chicago. Comedy veteran Dave Chappelle (The Chappelle Show, The Nutty Professor) is also expected to make an appearance. The trailer is here on MADE; check it out in theaters today.

New Trailer Available For ‘2oolander’ In Theaters February 2016

Reactions by fans to the news that there would be a second Zoolander was pretty mixed, although it didn’t necessarily come with any real surprise considering Hollywood insists on banking on 20-year-old franchises these days. Nevertheless the rumors were true and production has been underway for sometime now, with the upcoming release for Zoolander 2 scheduled for February 12, 2016. Ben Stiller (Meet the Parents, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story) and Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Midnight in Paris) are reprising their roles as fashion models Derek and Hansel, whose careers are now threatened by a new company attempting to put them out of business. Ben Stiller is once again behind the director’s chair, working from a script by himself and original Zoolander screenwriter John Hamburg (Along Came Polly, I Love You Man), along with Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2) and Nicholas Stoller (Yes Man, Get Him To The Greek). John Stewart’s New Drama ‘Rosewater’ Hits Theaters Friday

The infamous host of The Daily Show, John Stewart, will see his first theatrical project open on big screens across America this Friday. Rosewater follows the story of Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian author and journalist, who was detained and tortured in Iran for four months in 2009 under the assumption that he was in contact with an American spy. Bahari had participated in an interview on Stewart’s Daily Show earlier that year that covered the upcoming Iranian presidential election, and so his imprisonment was based on the assumption that he was keeping tabs on Iran’s political leaders and then leaking the information. Since his release, Bahari has written a memoir about the ordeal titled Then They Came For Me, which has now been adapted for the big screen by Stewart and will open in theaters this weekend. The title Rosewater comes from one of Bahari’s torturers, who Bahari never actually saw but remembered that the man smelled of rosewater. Bahari is portrayed in the film by Gael Garcia Bernal (Amores Perros, The Motorcycle Diaries), and Kim Bodnia (Pusher, Bleeder) as Rosewater, with Dimitri Leonidas and Haluk Bilginer also among the supporting cast. Check out the trailer here on MADE, then go check it out this weekend!

Oscar Winner Philip Seymour Hoffman Dead At 46

philip

Yesterday the film industry was struck by another terrible tragedy. Just two months following the sudden death of Paul Walker, Oscar winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his apartment in New York City yesterday from what is believed to be a drug overdose. The 46 year old actor leaves behind a legacy of characters including a spoiled prep student in Scent of a Woman, a mistrusted priest in Doubt, the Rock n Roll critic Lester Bangs in Almost Famous, the smart yet energetic clown Dusty in Twister, and the troubled writer Truman Capote in Bennett Miller’s oscar-winning biopic. Hoffman won an Oscar and Golden Globe for his portrayal of Truman Capote in 2006, and has been nominated for a total of four Oscars and four Globes for his roles in Doubt, Charlie Wilson’s War, The Savages, and his most recent picture, The Master in 2012. The actor has also played parts in Punch-Drunk Love, The Big Lebowski, Patch Adams, Along Came Polly, and Mission: Impossible 3. His most recent projects included two selections at this years Sundance Festival: A Most Wanted Man and God’s Pocket. The actor also played a part in the latest installment of The Hunger Games series, Catching Fire. The role is expected to be a part of the third film, so along with several other in-development roles Hoffman was expected to take, the studios/filmmakers will have to find other actors to take his place. Hoffman is succeeded by his three children, Cooper, Tallulah, and Willa with longtime girlfriend Mimi O’Donnell. Hoffman’s contribution to film, as well as his personal talent and admiration for his art will truly be missed in the future.
