Stephen King Adaptation ‘The Dark Tower’ Opening In Theaters This August

Author Stephen King is making a big cinematic comeback in 2017. A new adaptation of his 1986 horror-classic It is opening in theaters this September, and is expected to be a two-part installation with the second film following soon after. Before It hits theaters, however, another Stephen King adaptation will see a nationwide release in the form of The Dark Tower. Based on the final novel in his eight-part series, The Dark Tower, the film follows a man named Roland Deschain, the Last Gunslinger, who faces off with the Man in Black, Walter O’Dim, in an effort to stop him from destroying the Dark Tower, a mystical building that serves as the center of all universes. In writing the series, King drew inspiration from several sources, including the Arthurian Legend, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, and the American West. Continue reading

New Indie Biographical Drama ‘Free State of Jones’ Now Playing In Theaters

A new drama from writer/director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Hunger Games) titled Free State of Jones is now playing in theaters. The film follows the true story of Newton Knight, a farmer in Civil-War era Mississippi who abandoned the Confederate Army and formed a militia consisting of both white farmers and African-Americans who took over and declared Jones County an independent state. Ross adapted the screenplay from author Victoria Bynum’s The Free State of Jones: Mississippi’s Longest Civil War, although there are numerous publications of Knight’s stance in Jones County. Appearing as Newton Knight is Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, Dallas Buyer’s Club), who is joined onscreen by Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Concussion, Jupiter Ascending), Mahershala Ali (House of Cards, The Place Beyond the Pines), Keri Russell (The Americans, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Christopher Berry (Django Unchained, 12 Years a Slave), and Jacob Lofland (Mud, The Scorch Trials). This is definitely a lesser-known portion of American history, but one that is definitely intriguing, although I will say that the trailer reads a bit like The Patriot. If you’re looking for an evening out this week, keep this one on your list. The trailer is available here on MADE.

New Sci-Fi Thriller ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Opening In Theaters This Friday

A new sci-fi thriller called 10 Cloverfield Lane is opening in theaters this Friday, March 11th, 2016. Although you might recognize the title, aside from the name, there is apparently no other connection to the original 2008 thriller Cloverfield, which involved a monster of sorts attacking the residents of New York City. This new movie comes from director Dan Trachtenberg from a script by screenwriters Josh Campbell (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Van Helsing), Matthew Stuecken (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra), and Damien Chazelle (Grand Piano, Whiplash) about a woman who is involved in a car accident and is held in a shelter by two men who believe the world has been affected by a widespread chemical attack. Starring in the film are actors John Goodman (The Big Lebowsky, Argo), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Live Free or Die Hard, Death Proof), John Gallagher (Margaret, The Newsroom), Douglas M. Griffin (Dallas Buyers Club, 12 Years A Slave), Suzanne Cryer (Wag the Dog, Silicon Valley), Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, The Hangover), and Sumalee Montano (Nashville, Veep). The trailer is available here on MADE; check it out on the big screen this weekend!

New Trailer For ‘Suicide Squad’ Now Available

The latest trailer for the upcoming Suicide Squad movie was released this week, giving fans a much closer look at the group of maniacal killers that are recruited by the government to carry out black-ops missions in exchange for reduced sentences. Writer/director David Ayer (Training Day, Fury) assembled an all-star group of actors for the line-up, including Will Smith (Independence Day, I Robot), Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Dallas Buyers Club), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus), Joel Kinnaman (Safehouse, Run All Night), Viola Davis (The Help, Prisoners), and Jai Courtney (Divergent, Terminator: Genisys). There’s not much I can really say; everything looks really well done, including the acting, and it looks like we’ll see more by way of real action stunts than overdone CGI effects. Check out the trailer here on MADE; the movie comes to theaters August 5th.

This week Academy Award-winning musician-turned-actor Jared Leto (Requiem For A Dream, Dallas Buyers Club) was seen in a new photo from director David Ayer’s Twitter account. The photo displays Leto’s Joker make-up for the upcoming Suicide Squad, due out in theaters in August 2016, while simultaneously celebrating the 75th anniversary of the character’s first appearance. Writer/director David Ayer (End of Watch, Fury) will be working from his own script adaptation of Ross Andru, Robert Kanigher, and John Ostrander’s DC Comics series. Joining Leto in the cast line-up are actors Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus), Jai Courtney (The Water Diviner, Terminator Genisys), Will Smith (Independence Day, Men in Black), Joel Kinneman (Safe House, RoboCop), and Viola Davis (The Help, Prisoners). The plot details are minute but the general outline from the comics is that the Suicide Squad is a group of super-villains put together by a government agency tasked with carrying out dangerous missions in exchange for shorter prison sentences. Principle photography is currently underway, so we should see a teaser trailer coming out pretty soon. Follow the link below to see the tweeted photo from director Ayer.

Amy Adams’ Janis Joplin Biopic Brings Director Jean March-Vallee Onboard

Actress Amy Adams (American Hustle, Man of Steel) has been trying to get a biopic about iconic blues/rock singer Janis Joplin onto the big screen for a number of years now, and now some news regarding a new director has surfaced from Deadline. Jean March-Vallee, who just directed Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyer’s Club last year, has been brought on to helm the movie, which will come from an untitled script by Ron and Theresa Terry. Joplin died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27, but during the mid 1960s, she and The Big Brother Holding Company released several blues/rock albums with songs like Piece Of My Heart, Cry Baby, and Me And Bobby McGee, and played at the famous Woodstock Music Festival in 1969, making Joplin a figure of rock legend. I’d actually be pretty interested if this one got underway, especially given Adams’ track record and passion for the singer’s life, but we’ll keep an eye out for further news or additional casting.

Jared Leto Possibly Taking Role In ‘Brilliance’ With Noomi Rapace

Actor Jared Leto has a lot on his plate since he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor alongside Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club last year. The actor is in talks to take the lead role in Marvel’s Dr. Strange, and he may also take the lead in Brilliance at Legendary and Universal Pictures. Actress Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) is already attached the project, which was adapted by David Koepp from the novel by Marcus Sakey. The story follows a federal agent who is also a ‘brilliant’ because of his superhuman powers, who sets out to stop another ‘brilliant’ from starting a Civil War. Sounds pretty interesting, but I might want to read this one before I wait a few years to see it in theaters. If Leto takes both jobs his schedule is going to grow extremely tight, but we’ll see what happens.

McConaughey Continues Hot Streak With New HBO Drama ‘True Detective’

Matthew McConaughey is making a pretty impressive comeback in Hollywood these days. The 45 year old actor has appeared in several major films in the last couple years, one of which has now earned him a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. McConaughey began taking on more challenging roles back in 2011 with The Lincoln Lawyer from director Brad Furman. The actor then appeared in director Jeff Nichols’ Mud (2012), in which he plays an escaped prisoner who evades law enforcement with the help of two young boys. His most recent appearances, however, have been his most popular projects of his career. McConaughey played a small part in Martin Scorsese’s new film The Wolf of Wall Street, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. Wall Street has already received five Oscar nominations and earned Leonardo DiCaprio a Golden Globe for Best Actor. Although McConaughey’s role in the film was very small, his next lead project would bring him to a new level on Hollywood’s list of A-list actors. Dallas Buyers Club follows the story of Ron Woodroof (McConaughey), an electrician who begins hustling illegal AIDS medication over the US/Mexican border after he, himself, is diagnosed with the disease. Dallas has already earned McConaughey and Jared Leto Golden Globes for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, and has also been nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor (McConaughey), and Best Supporting Actor (Jared Leto).

With the Academy Awards coming up soon, Hollywood is waiting to see if McConaughey will join the ranks of the Oscar-winners, the actor’s next project is already well underway on HBO. True Detective, which aired on HBO earlier this month, follows two Louisiana detectives as they recount the details of a homicide case they worked together in 1995. The show was created by Nic Pizzolatto, who won a Writers Guild of America award for AMC’s crime drama The Killing, and co-stars Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan. There haven’t been any talks of award nominations or anything like that as of yet, but with the first season already six episodes in, the screenwriting has proven superbly written, and McConaughey is delivering a performance few in Hollywood thought he had ten years ago when he was appearing in movies like How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days (2003), Sahara (2005), and Failure To Launch (2006). If he keeps this up, McConaughey could very well continue to rise up as a veteran actor in Hollywood. The actor will next be appearing in The Dark Knight and Inception director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Interstellar, which is due out in November and co-stars Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, and Michael Caine. You can catch up on True Detective, and continue with the new series on HBO.
