Movie News/Independent Highlight

This week will see a number of indie projects open on select screens across the country. We mentioned the Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Snow White and the Huntsmen) drama Equals opening this Friday, about a couple who falls in love as the result of a disease in a futuristic utopia that is devoid of feeling and emotion, and the tension it causes between them and their society. Co-starring with Stewart is Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: Apocalypse), who are led by director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy, Breathe In).

Also opening on the indie circuit this week is a new animated movie called Phantom Boy, which takes place in the 1940s-50s and follows a young boy with superpowers who helps a wheelchair-bound policeman in his efforts to take down a notorious mob boss. The film comes from Oscar-nominated filmmakers Loup Felicioli & Alain Gagnol (A Cat in Paris) and stars French actors Edouard Baer (Chicken with Plums), Jean-Pierre Marielle (Coup de torchon, The DaVinci Code), and Audrey Tautou (A Very Long Engagement, Amelie).

New Coen Brothers Comedy ‘Hail Caesar!’ Opening In Theaters February 5th

The Coen Brothers are finally back on the big screen with a new comedy titled Hail Caesar!. Starring Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers, Iron Man 2), Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Foxcatcher), Ralph Fiennes (The Constant Gardener, Spectre), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street, Moneyball) and Coen regulars Tilda Swinton (Burn After Reading, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Men In Black 3), and George Clooney (Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, Ocean’s Eleven), the film follows a Hollywood ‘fixer’ who works for Capital Records in the 1950s and must deal with the disappearance of the studio’s biggest star before an upcoming release is ruined by the schemers behind the kidnapping. The film was co-written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen (in their usual fashion), and will be their first project together since 2013’s Oscar-nominated drama Inside Llewyn Davis with Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Carey Mulligan (Drive, The Great Gatsby), although they have written several films since then, including director Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. The trailer for Hail Caesar! is available here on MADE. Look for it in theaters this February 5th.

Principle photography is currently underway on a new biographical drama from Oscar-nominee Rob Reiner (The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men), titled LBJ. Leading the film as President Johnson is fellow Oscar-nominee Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, True Detective), with Jennifer Jason Leigh (Road To Perdition, The Machinist), C. Thomas Howell (E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, The Amazing Spider-Man), Bill Pullman (Spaceballs, Independence Day), Jeffery Donovan (Changeling, Burn Notice), and Richard Jenkins (The Indian in the Cupboard, Step Brothers). The plot is expected to range from 1959 to 1964, covering Johnson’s time in the Senate, Vice-Presidency under John F. Kennedy, and his subsequent term as President after Kennedy’s assassination, coming from a script by Joey Hartstone (Project Runway). Johnson faced several large issues during his time as President, including the beginning of the Vietnam conflict and the Civil Rights Movement. We’ll keep an eye on this one as it progresses, but as of now the film does not have an exact release date. Stay tuned.

Director Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Sicario’ Opening In Theaters This September 18th

Stepping away from the overdone comic-book genre that seems to be dominating big screens these days, a new film titled Sicario from Prisoners and Enemy director Denis Villeneuve will be opening in theaters this fall. The script comes from actor-turned-screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (White Rush, Sons of Anarchy) and centers upon an FBI agent who is recruited by a government task force to aid in the ongoing drug war happening at the US/Mexican border. Starring in the leading roles are actors Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau, Edge of Tomorrow), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Men In Black 3), and Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Traffic), with Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Wolf of Wall Street), Jeffery Donovan (Burn Notice, Changeling) and Victor Garber (Titanic, Argo) also appearing in the supporting cast. The film received very positive reviews and an Official Selection nod at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will be open in theaters nationwide this September 18th, a pretty solid contender for Scott Cooper’s Black Mass with Johnny Depp, which opens the same weekend, so mark your calendars! The trailer is available here on MADE.

Actors Bill Hader (SuperBad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Brie Larson (21 Jump Street, The Gambler), and Tilda Swinton (Burn After Reading, The Grand Budapest Hotel) make up the supporting cast, plus a special appearance by NBA star Lebron James. Frances McDormand Joining Cast Of Coen Brothers’ Upcoming Comedy ‘Hail Caesar’

reading

Frances McDormand recently revealed that she had an unknown role in the upcoming comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen, Hail Caesar. McDormand is no stranger to Coen Brothers movies, having appeared in Burn After Reading (2008), The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), and Raising Arizona (1987). She also secured an Oscar for Best Actress for the Coen’s 1997 crime thriller Fargo. Hail Caesar already has an all-star cast attached to appear, including George Clooney in the lead role, with Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, and Alden Ehrenreich (who just appeared in Woody Allen’s Oscar-winning dramedy Blue Jasmine) making up the supporting cast. While McDormand is obviously a great addition to the cast, the decision to cast her is really not so surprising. The Coens have always had a tendency to work with the same actors, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Bridges, and Josh Brolin. Hail Caesar will follow the story of Eddie Mannix, a “fixer” in the studios of Hollywood responsible for protecting the reputations of the film industry’s biggest moneymakers. It should make for an interesting watch, but we won’t see it hit theaters until sometime in 2015, so stay tuned.
