Frozen Film Festival and Red Bull Crashed Ice 2017 Are Downtown Saint Paul This Weekend

This weekend, downtown Saint Paul is playing host to both the 2017 Frozen Film Festival and Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship. The Frozen Film Festival is showing a number of student short films on Friday night, followed by a feature-length film titled Viral Beauty. The festival will continue on Saturday and conclude with an awards ceremony and closing party. Events for the festival are being held at the F.K. Weyerhaeuser Theater, located at 75 W. 5th Street, and at TPT Street Space, located at 172 E. 4th Street. The Red Bull Crashed Ice 2017 World Championship, which has now come to Saint Paul six years in a row, is happening downtown at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The event is an ice cross downhill race that begins on the steps of the Cathedral with participants racing on ice skates. Mayor Chris Coleman also usually shows up to take a slow, but admirable attempt at the track, if not just for PR purposes (but you didn’t hear that from us!). Time trials begin at 11am on Friday, and the finals take place from 6:30 – 9:30pm on Saturday. Needless to say there’s plenty to check out this weekend, so be sure to get up and do something!

Tribeca Film Festival Closes 2015 Celebration With ‘Goodfellas’ Showing And Cast Reunion

Actors Robert DeNiro (Left), Ray Liotta (Center), and Paul Sorvino (Right) were all present to celebrate the Goodfellas anniversary.

This year the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City closed it’s curtains with a special showing of Martin Scorsese‘s 1990 mobster classic, Goodfellas. The film was shown in a new remastered 4K print, and to celebrate the 25th Anniversary, members of the cast, including Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Robert DeNiro (The Godfather Part II, Casino), Ray Liotta (Hannibal, Identity), Lorraine Bracco (The Basketball Diaries, The Sopranos), Paul Sorvino (The Gambler, Romeo + Juliet), and Debi Mazar (Batman Forever, Entourage) reunited at the Beacon Theatre for the special showing. Robert DeNiro introduced the film with a brief speech, noting that Joe Pesci (Home Alone, My Cousin Vinny), who won the 1990 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Tommy, could not be in attendance. Director Martin Scorsese (The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street) and producer Irwin Winkler (Rocky, Raging Bull) were also absent, but the audience was able to view special video messages they had sent, as well as a live conversation (hosted by The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart) with the present cast members, who discussed their personal memories of the film. But the anniversary of the film is only part of the celebration; Goodfellas was filmed (and takes place) in and around New York City, complimenting Robert DeNiro’s goal of celebrating the film heritage of New York City by founding the Tribeca Film Festival. Needless to say I think he’ll have a hard time topping himself next year!

Martin Scorsese To Retire From Film???

Just reading the headline makes your stomach churn. Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese has been responsible for some of the finest movies made in cinematic history. His resume includes such classics as Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995), Raging Bull (1980), Taxi Driver (1976), The Departed (2006), and The Aviator (2004), and that’s only to name a few. Scorsese has maintained his reputation as a director ever since his first breakthrough project, Mean Streets, in 1973, but his talents are definitely not limited to great original storytelling. The director has spent a great number of years following the great rock and roll acts of the 20th century, particularly The Rolling Stones, The Band, Michael Jackson, and George Harrison. His latest film, The Wolf of Wall Street, is due out this month, after which he will begin filming his next project, Silence, this upcoming summer. Scorsese won the Academy Award for Best Director in 2007 for The Departed and has been nominated for the same award a total of 7 times, as well as securing four Golden Globes. With all that under his belt one can understand his desire to retire on his own terms, as well as the pressure he must still have to endure during the film process at the age of 71! But we may yet see a few more films before he decides to definitely stop working. He is currently working on a documentary on former president Bill Clinton, and is supposed to helm a Sinatra biopic after Silence is completed, so we’ll hold our breath on this retirement news for now.
