Writer/director Woody Allen (Annie Hall, Manhattan) has had a pretty solid streak since Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine both won Oscar awards. His latest project is a dramatic comedy following a young Bronx native who moves to 1930s Hollywood to follow his successful uncle, who is a Hollywood agent. Instead, he falls in love with his uncle’s secretary and upon returning to New York, becomes engulfed in the high-society night club scene in Manhattan. The film features an all-star cast, including Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Zombieland), Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Snow White and the Huntsman), Steve Carell (Foxcatcher, The Big Short), and Blake Lively (The Town, The Age of Adaline). The new hard-hitting drama Legend, which finds Tom Hardy playing duel roles as identical twin brothers Reggie and Ronnie Kray, is opening in theaters nationwide this week. The film first saw a limited release back on November 20th, and now audiences everywhere will get to see the fact-based drama Oscar-winning writer/director Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, LA Confidential). Set in 1960s England, the film follows the story of the Kray’s as they run their empire of organized crime among the streets of East London and whose strength and loyalty to each other will be put to the ultimate test. Joining Hardy in the cast are actors Emily Browning (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Pompeii), Taron Egerton (Testament of Youth, Kingsman: The Secret Service), Sam Spruell (K-19: The Widowmaker, The Hurt Locker), and Chaz Palminteri (A Bronx Tale, The Usual Suspects). From the looks of the trailer, audiences can expect a pretty hard-hitting drama, but there is also word going around that the trailer is very misleading, which tends to happen a lot in Hollywood. Eddie Huang is back in the states for the next episode of Fresh Off The Boat. After spending some time in Shanghai, Eddie brings it back home to NYC for a little tour around the big apple. In the first installment, Eddie meets up with Loopy of WorldStarHipHop for a run down on the Bronx’s best bodegas. There’s no denying New York City’s incredibly large role in the culture that surrounds skateboarding. Whether it’s the free-roam playground like feel or the plethora of world famous spots, NYC has definitely proven itself as one of the best cities to skate. Over the last year, Jeremy Elkin has been working to put together a film entitled “The Brodies”. Banksy is on fire right now, just incase if you’ve been living under a rock the past 21 days; the British street artist is now on day 21 of his “Better Out Than In” street exhibition within the confines of New York City. His most recent piece features the signature style that we’ve all grown accustomed to, the piece depicts a young lad tagging “Ghetto 4 Life” accompanied by his butler. Playful yet satirical the piece is located in New York City’s South Bronx section displaying a stark contrast with it’s environment. As Americans are we slaves to mega corporations? British artist Banksy sure seems to think so, the above sculpture is his day 16 piece for “Better Out Than In” and clearly illustrates the sentiment that we as the people; are now serving the corporations that once strived so hard to serve us. Another great piece from the now legendary street artist, this one can be found outside a McDonalds in the South Bronx; stay tuned for more of “Better Out Than In” as it continues through October.
Mass Appeal & Red Bull Studios have hooked up to bring together what’s looking like a pretty dope documentary. “Write of Passage” is meant to explore the impact of American graffiti culture on the rest of the world and on art in general, the project will run six weeks and plans on expanding upon how people view graffiti.
