Hebru Brantley

Hebru 1
Hebru 2

When I first arrived in Chicago at the back end of 2008 i had absolutely no clue who Hebru Brantley was. I remember cruising along Milwaukee Avenue and seeing huge graffiti style murals of futuristic looking children wearing goggles, and wondering to myself “who the hell makes these?”. One day a friend of mine put me on to an art show and boom the connection was made, i now knew his name but the research had just began. A few years later and the man, the myth continues to be an internationally acclaimed artist with backing from some very prestigious people/companies: Jay Z, Nike, Lollapalooza and Life+Times to name a few. The South side native most recently was involved with a Nike sponsored pop up shop featuring his clothing line in conjunction with Lollapalooza weekend. One of the coolest things about Hebru is that he’s so in tune with the streets of Chicago and what’s going on in his city, i still have no idea how many of his pieces are sprinkled around the city; but it’s still amazing every time i stumble upon one. If you’ve never heard of Hebru Brantley click the link below and check out his website and stay tuned for his next event.

Phil’s Last Stand

Hours: Sun: 10:30AM-10PM, Mon-Tue: 10:30AM-Midnight, Wed: 10:30AM-2AM, Thur-Sat: 10:30AM-4AM

Chicago’s hot dog game is on another level; red hots, char-dogs, grilled or raw onions, Chicago style toppings or old school style, poppy seed bun or plain, NO KETCHUP; it is it’s own madness. Last weekend we were out late in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood and decided to stop by Phil’s Last Stand to finally find out what all the hype’s about. {2:00am, Saturday}: Upon entering, the place was full of all sorts of Chicago’s finest, everyone from drunken college kids, fed up locals; and yes the odd bum or two. Classic atmosphere at any Chicago stand around bar close, the interior was packed but the picnic table filled patio was pleasantly vacant. Both the burgers and the hot dogs were awesome, and like my friend Blanco said, “This place doesn’t give a fuck about fries”; they literally filled the entire basket around the hot dogs. Phil’s easily earned it’s spot within my top 5 hot dog stands in the city, good food, decent prices and they offer more space than the average stand. If you’re ever in West Town or the Ukraine Village on an empty stomach, i’d highly recommend a stop here; you wont leave hungry.

Sadly, Rodan in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood has closed it’s doors for good. Not many details regarding the reasons why, but the owners did release a statement saying that rent had increased by $2,000 and they “no longer had the fire” to run the place. Hopefully it’s not replaced by something like Urban Outfitters.

The Piggery Now Re-Open In Chicago’s Lake View Neighborhood

The Piggery has been serving Chicagoans great tasting pulled-pork barbeque for the last 65 years. Located in Lake View at the intersection of Irving Park Rd and Ashland Ave, the restaurant has just had its grand re-opening since a fire damaged the building in February, 2012. Featuring delicious barbeque pulled-pork sandwiches, burgers, chicken entrees, a full service bar and a breakfast menu on Saturday and Sunday mornings, The Piggery is definitely worth stopping in for a midday Cubs game or an evening meal. Check out this clip from Chicago’s Best, as they stop in to try the Piggery’s famous Cuban Sandwich! The Piggery is available on Yelp, GrubHub, and Delivery.com, so be sure to stop-by!

New Spike Lee Drama ‘Chiraq’ Begins Filming In Chicago’s Wicker Park Neighborhood

Chicago Police investigate a shooting on Chicago’s southside.

Chicagoans may have noticed all the crazy traffic that surrounded the Wicker Park neighborhood today (June 2nd). The cause? Controversial film director Spike Lee (Malcolm X, Inside Man) is in town at the intersection of North and Milwaukee Avenue beginning principle photography for his new drama Chiraq. The film has already been the subject of much scrutiny owing to the implications of its title, and the graphic nature of the violence in Chicago that is expected to be the film’s main focus. Making up the cast are actors Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained), John Cusack (Hot Tub Time Machine, The Raven), Jeremy Piven (Old School, Entourage), Common (Now You See Me, Selma), and Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls, Empire), with rapper Kanye West rumored to also be in the cast. Details on the plot are still pretty vague, but the film has been in production for sometime now, and this is likely only one location that will be used for film locations. The film is due out in theaters in 2016. Stay tuned.

Lulu’s Food Truck – Minneapolis

For about a year now I have been hearing multiple people claim that Lulu’s is one of the top trucks to visit. What exactly is it that makes people crave their food? Well, if you don’t know, their food certainly stands out as one of the best around (now that I have had it first hand).

The bright multi colored truck, which can be spotted a few blocks away, features food as colorful as its vibrant paint job. Whether you like tacos, burgers, fries or crab cake, these guys put a great twist to these once generic food items. Whether it is the Cuban Chicken Tacos, Chicken Waffle Sandwich, or the variety of fish burgers they feature; it is all worth a try. One of my personal favorites is their Cuban Chicken Tacos, which features a hefty amount of corn and beans dowsed in a juicy flavorful chicken topped with a chipotle aioli. Hungry yet? Make sure to keep a look out for this one around town.
