90th Academy Awards Ceremony Falls Flat Despite The Efforts of Jimmy Kimmel

kimmel oscars

Jimmy Kimmel has become something of a favorite when it comes to awards show hosts in Hollywood, but even his calm and collected approach to comedy wasn’t enough to make the 90th Academy Awards any easier to watch. To no one’s surprise, the event was littered with awkward moments, transparency montages, and overrated acceptance speeches, the latter of which Kimmel tried to spare us by enticing winners to keep their speeches short in exchange for a new jet ski. The host even joked about the crystal-laden stage, commenting that “each of the 45,000 Swarovski crystals on the stage represents humility,” even though the site was really enough to make anyone working an honest 9-to-5 cringe. Despite presenting some well-deserved wins for Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Gary Oldman, and Roger Deakins, the “brilliance” of the event was overshadowed with failed Star Wars skits, a hotdog-throwing prank, and several desperate attempts to whitewash the #OscarsSoWhite, #MeToo, and #TimesUp movements.

In regards to the latter, a special pre-filmed segment featuring interviews with Hollywood elites discussing equal representation in the business was presented by Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Selma Hayek, who urged viewers at home to make movies about their own life stories. Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani also took an opportunity to address the Dreamers, reassuring those who were watching that “Dreams are the foundation of Hollywood, and dreams are the foundation of America.” The best take on the present state of Hollywood, however, came from Kumail Nanjiani, who commented that, “Some of my favorite movies are by straight white dudes, about straight white dudes. Now you can watch my movies and relate to me. It’s not that hard. I’ve been doing it my whole life.” In the end, a lot of jokes were made about the laughable spectacle that is Hollywood, but in the end we’ll see how much change actually occurs before the Oscars return next March. A full list of winners can be seen here.

New ‘Power Rangers’ Movie Being Planned For 2017

It’s official: there’s a new Power Rangers big-screen adaptation coming to theaters in 2017, and pre-production is already well underway. So much so, in fact, that a director and some initial cast spots have already been filled. Leading the new movie is Project Almanac director Dean Israelite, who will work from a script by screenwriting partners Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (Thor, X-Men: First Class). Actress Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Zack and Miri Make a Porno) has just been cast in the role of villain Rita Repulsa, who will face-off with the Power Rangers, comprising of actors Naomi Scott (The 33, The Martian) as the Pink Ranger, Kimberly, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Second Chances) as the Blue Ranger, Billy, Becky G. (House of Sin, Empire) as the Yellow Ranger, Trini, Darce Montgomery (A Few Less Men) as Red Ranger, Jason, and Ludi Lin (The Intruders, Monster Hunt) as the Black Ranger, Zack. No word yet on whether or not old Zed will appear alongside Rita, or who will star as Zordon or the robot Alpha, but seeing as it’s been a long time since we’ve seen the Power Rangers in theaters, we can expect this is one remake people might actually want to see happen. Stay tuned for more updates.

Director Jerry Jameson’s ‘Captive’ Opening In Theaters This Friday

A new drama from director Jerry Jameson (Airport 77, Magnum PI) titled Captive is opening in theaters nationwide this Friday. Based on the novel An Unlikely Angel by Ashley Smith, the film tells of her 2005 encounter with Brian Nichols, who showed up at her apartment in the middle of the night and held her hostage for seven hours before letting her go and turning himself into authorities for murdering four people. Starring as Smith is Kate Mara (127 Hours, Fantastic Four), and Golden Globe winner David Oyelowo (Interstellar, Selma) as Brian Nichols. Making up the supporting cast are actors Mimi Rogers (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Lost In Space), Michael K. Williams (Gone Baby Gone, 12 Years A Slave), and Jessica Oyelowo (Sleepy Hollow, Alice in Wonderland). The book was adapted for the screen by Brian Bird (The Last Sin Eater, The Confession). The trailer is available here on MADE. This one should prove to be a pretty intense watch, but with David Oyelowo included in the line-up it should turn out to be a pretty good one. Enjoy!

‘Insurgent’ And ‘The Gunman’ Opening In Theaters March 20th

Opening on the big screen this week is the second installment in the Divergent series titled Insurgent, based on the book series by Veronica Roth. Insurgent continues to follow Tris Prior and her fellow ‘Divergents’ in their struggle against the alliance, reuniting cast members Shailene Woodley (The Descendants, The Fault in Our Stars), Theo James (You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, Underworld: Awakening), Jai Courtney (A Good Day To Die Hard, Unbroken), Zoe Kravitz (It’s Kind of a Funny Story, X-Men: First Class), Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Life of David Gale), and Ashley Judd (Double Jeopardy, High Crimes), among others. One crew member that is not returning, however, is director Neil Burger, who has been replaced by Robert Schwentke (Flightplan, RED) working from a script by Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldsman, and Mark Bomback. Also opening is a new action flick a little more grounded in reality; The Gunman stars Oscar-winners Sean Penn (Mystic River, Milk) and Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men, Skyfall), as well as Golden Globe-winner Idris Elba (American Gangster, Prometheus). Vantage Point director Pete Travis adapted the screenplay from Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel, with Taken director Pierre Morel heading the project. Both features open in theaters March 20th; if you haven’t seen Divergent, be sure to check it out before you go and see Insurgent. The trailer for Insurgent is here, but you can also see The Gunman trailer on our earlier post:

‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Movie Gets July 2016 Release Date

Anyone who was a fan of the original 90s TV series will remember the Power Rangers and their struggle to protect Earth from Rita and Zedd on their moon-based fortress. Fans of the show will also remember Might Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, which came out in 1995 and featured the teenage heros in a big screen showdown with new villain Ivan Ooze. Now a new movie-adaptation from screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller is in the works and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 22, 2016. The two writers will adapt the script from a story by Robert Orci (Star Trek), but at this point there is not a director attached to the project and we have no idea who will be cast to revive the Rangers for this new generation of movie-goers. Stay tuned for more news!
