Mixed Reviews For ‘The Disaster Artist’ As Film Receives Theatrical Expansion

As Variety’s Peter Debruge hails The Disaster Artist as James Franco achieving “what could become his most iconic role,” others like The New Yorker’s Richard Brody have claimed it’s a good movie, but Franco missed the mark; The Room is a better movie. Truth be told, reviews are always mixed for any movie, but when you compare a new theatrical film to what’s become known as the worst movie ever made, that’s saying something. The Disaster Artist, which is directed by, and stars James Franco, along with his brother Dave and long time collaborator Seth Rogan, follows the making of The Room, known to many as the worst movie ever made. The Room was a production-disaster-turned-cult-classic that was the lifeblood of two aspiring filmmakers, Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero. The two met and, realizing their dreams of filmmaking, decided to go to Hollywood to make their masterpiece. A $6 billion bill, countless horrendous reviews, and an opening weekend of only 200 ticket sales, however, seemed to literally spell disaster for the young filmmakers. But sometime after the initial release, something unexpected began to happen. Continue reading

Covering the walls of this 100-year-old church are the eye-catching, geometric, color-filled murals of artist Okuda San Miguel. The project was started by ‘The Church Brigade’ and funded by Red Bull as well as online fundraising. It’s almost like a modern day Sistine Chapel you can skate in.

New Trailer For ‘Concussion’ With Will Smith Now Available

Will Smith‘s next big screen outing, a drama by the name of Concussion, will be opening in theaters this Christmas Day. This time around the Independence Day and Pursuit of Happiness star takes on the role of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a neuropathologist who first discovered CTE, a brain injury related to playing football, and sought to expose the truth behind the condition, despite the efforts of the multi-million dollar corporation that is the NFL trying to keep him silent. Director Peter Landesman (Parkland, Kill the Messenger) worked with author Jean Marie-Laskas to adapt the screenplay from her GQ article Game Brain, which is based on Dr. Omalu’s life and work. Starring in the film are actors Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights, Jupiter Ascending), Bitsie Tulloch (The Artist, Parkland), Stephen Moyer (Priest, True Blood), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, The Departed), Luke Wilson (Legally Blonde, Old School), and Albert Brooks (Drive, A Most Violent Year). Check out the trailer here on MADE. We’ll be bringing further news and reminders as we get closer to the Holidays. Enjoy!

Catch This Week’s Limited Releases Opening In Theaters This Weekend

she's that kind of funny

Indie films hardly get the public recognition they deserve outside of the circle of internationally known film festivals, or national premieres outside of New York City or Los Angeles (the recently released Mr. Holmes with Sir Ian McKellen and Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence serve as perfect examples). But that’s not to say I wouldn’t recommend seeing any of these. This week several such projects will be seeing limited releases on big screens across the country. First on the list is Grandma from writer/director Paul Weitz (About A Boy, In Good Company), which follows a young teenager, Sage, as she goes to her grandmother, Elle Reid, for help when finding herself in a tight spot. The two embark on a day-long journey of self discovery and life reflection that brings both a sense of comfort and motivation to the audience. Actresses Lily Tomlin (Nine to Five, I Heart Huckabees), Julia Garner (Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), and Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Into The Wild) will be leading the cast on this one. Next on the list is The Last Picture Show director Peter Bogdanovich‘s She’s Funny That Way, starring Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later, Filth), Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Midnight in Paris), Jennifer Aniston (Horrible Bosses, We’re The Millers), and Kathryn Hahn (Step Brothers, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty). Given the plot of this one revolves around a love-triangle on the set of a Broadway production in New York, I would recommend this one as a good date-night movie. Last, but not least, is another romantic comedy (you would think it’s Valentine’s Day weekend!) called Some Kind of Beautiful from director Tom Vaughn (What Happens in Vegas, Extraordinary Measures). Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye, The Thomas Crown Affair), Salma Hayek (From Dusk Til Dawn, Desperado), Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Awake), and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, The Artist) lead the cast in this tale of a Cambridge poetry professor who comes to a type of midlife crises when he begins to reevaluate his life. All three selections are rated R due to some pretty heavy content, but I think they are all definitely worth seeing, so be sure to check your local theater listings for showtimes in your area, and as always…Enjoy!!

Jackie Chan May Be Appearing In ‘Expendables 4’ But Still Not Completely Sold On ‘Rush Hour 4’

chan

With The Expendables 3 now in theaters, many are wondering what the next step will be for the all-star cast of should-be-retired muscle heads, and it may include some help from everybody’s favorite martial artist! Jackie Chan had been approached to make an appearance in Expendables 2 and 3, but due to scheduling conflicts he was not able to get the days off required to shoot his scenes for the films. But Sylvester Stallone seems pretty set on getting Chan involved in the next installment, which means we have another Expendables to look forward to (lucky us?). Anyway, The Expendables is not the only sequel that Chan has been approached to make either. Apparently there are still efforts coming out of New Line Cinema for Chan to reunite with Chris Tucker for Rush Hour 4, but Chan is not very interested in a fourth movie. He is currently working on an upcoming project titled Skip Trace with co-star Sean William Scott (American Pie, Road Trip) from director Renny Harlin about an American gambler who teams up with a Hong Kong detective in a face-off against a Chinese gang-lord. Personally I agree with Chan about a fourth Rush Hour sequel. We all saw what happened with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. After that catastrophe I think leaving well-enough alone is a perfectly acceptable option for a lot of Hollywood projects right now. But if they’re going to go and make a fourth Expendables, Jackie Chan might as well be in it…they already have every other old man in Hollywood making appearances in those movies anyway, one more wouldn’t hurt right?

[MADE] Recap – Pizza Luce Block Party 2014

DSC04437

This year’s Pizza Luce Block Party was definitely one of the better, if not the best block parties of the season. Good beers, great music, beautiful weather and all around good vibes made up the day.

Every artist that performed, put on a hell of a show in their own respects. With acts such as Charlie Parr, GRRRL PRTY, Carnage, Dem Atlas, Heiruspecs, and Black Market Brass Band — we witnessed a variety of the cities talented musicians.

The crowd was hyped from the get go and never seemed to let up. With inflatable giant beach balls bouncing around for hours, it definitely added a nice element to the experience by learning to not spill and keep your head up. With Pizza Luce strongly focused on having some of the cities up and comers and seasoned vets; Luce will definitely have us back for next years party. Lets just hope they never have a ticket system again though, waiting in a line to get into another line is never convenient.

deM atlaS – F=rankln

One week ago deM dropped a new visual from his Charle Brwn EP. The visual for F=rankln features the emcee spittin his cold flow out in a snowy field. It’s hard to not to vibe out to Fr=anklb, as he might just be the one bringing this heat wave to the city right now. Now we are ready for deM’s first full album, which we expect to come sometime in 2014. It will be interesting to hear what is next from the young emcee, as within the last year he has skyrocketed in popularity with the signing with Rhymesayers.

Black Milk – Glitches In The Break (Album)

While it seems like it was just yesterday that Black Milk released his album, No Poison No Paradise, a month ago he released yet another album. Glitches In The Break, offers that classic midwest hip-hop sound that we’re used to from the emcee. From heavy use of bass and snare with his clever word play, the album flows colder than the city he’s from.

*Reminder*

The album can be streamed for free on bandcamp or purchased for just $8. For those who collect wax, the vinyl will be out on Record Store Day, April 19th.
