New Indie Biographical Drama ‘Free State of Jones’ Now Playing In Theaters

A new drama from writer/director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Hunger Games) titled Free State of Jones is now playing in theaters. The film follows the true story of Newton Knight, a farmer in Civil-War era Mississippi who abandoned the Confederate Army and formed a militia consisting of both white farmers and African-Americans who took over and declared Jones County an independent state. Ross adapted the screenplay from author Victoria Bynum’s The Free State of Jones: Mississippi’s Longest Civil War, although there are numerous publications of Knight’s stance in Jones County. Appearing as Newton Knight is Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar, Dallas Buyer’s Club), who is joined onscreen by Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Concussion, Jupiter Ascending), Mahershala Ali (House of Cards, The Place Beyond the Pines), Keri Russell (The Americans, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Christopher Berry (Django Unchained, 12 Years a Slave), and Jacob Lofland (Mud, The Scorch Trials). This is definitely a lesser-known portion of American history, but one that is definitely intriguing, although I will say that the trailer reads a bit like The Patriot. If you’re looking for an evening out this week, keep this one on your list. The trailer is available here on MADE.

Long-Anticipated Miles Davis Biopic ‘Miles Ahead’ Now Playing In Theaters

Writer, director, and star Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Iron Man 2) is finally seeing his highly-anticipated biographical drama Miles Ahead playing on theaters across the country this weekend. The film follows the career and come-back of twentieth century jazz icon Miles Davis, who, in the film, is approached by a journalist from Rolling Stone magazine looking to write a piece about his career and his influence on popular music. Cheadle co-wrote the project with screenwriters Steven Baigelman (Feeling Minnesota, Get On Up), and Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson (Ali, Pawn Sacrifice), and took on the lead role of Davis himself. Appearing in the supporting cast are actors Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Big Fish), Emayatzy Corinealdi (Middle of Nowhere, Addicted), Keith Stanfield (Selma, Straight Outta Compton), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs, Trumbo). The film also features a remastered soundtrack of some of Davis’ most memorable music. The trailer is available one more time here on MADE. Critics have thus far praised the film for Cheadle’s acting. They have not, however, been so kind in terms of his abilities as a director. Regardless, I would definitely recommend going to see this one if you get a chance; Cheadle rarely fails to appear in a worthy film, and Miles Davis was one of the most dynamic jazz-rock fusion artists in popular culture, so at least you’ll be able to hear some great music while you watch. Enjoy!

New Trailer For Upcoming Miles Davis Biopic ‘Miles Ahead’ Now Available

We’ve been waiting for some more news on this project for several months now, but writer/director Don Cheadle (Crash, Hotel Rwanda) has been hard at work over the winter months wrapping up production on his new Miles Davis biopic titled Miles Ahead. Co-written with Cheadle by screenwriters Steven Baigelman (Feeling Minnesota, Get On Up), and Stephen J. Rivele and Christopher Wilkinson (Ali, Pawn Sacrifice), the film follows the life and music of Miles Davis, who is in the midst of his comeback era when a journalist from Rolling Stone magazine shows up to write his story and his affect on the music industry. Starring Cheadle in the title role, the film also features Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Big Fish), Emayatzy Corinealdi (Middle of Nowhere, Addicted), Keith Stanfield (Selma, Straight Outta Compton), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs, Trumbo), plus a remastered soundtrack of some of Davis’ most memorable music. The film is expected out in theaters this April 1st. Check out the new trailer here on MADE.

Season 3 Of ‘House Of Cards’ Now Playing On Netflix

Netflix subscribers and fans of House of Cards are already catching up on the third season of the hit original series. Starring Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey (LA Confidential, American Beauty) and Golden Globe winner Robin Wright (Forrest Gump, A Most Wanted Man) as political-power couple Francis and Claire Underwood, the series follows the two characters as they manipulate the US political system and its members in their quest to attain the Office of the US Presidency. Picking up 6-months into his term (having taken over for the former President at the conclusion of the previous season), Frank finds himself facing low approval ratings and tense foreign affairs with Russia as he attempts to push his solution to the American economic crisis through Congress, with opposition from both political parties. The series won both Wright and Spacey Golden Globe awards for their performances in 2014 and 2015 respectively, and the series has won Emmy’s for Outstanding Casting (Laray Mayfield, Julie Schubert), Outstanding Director (David Fincher), and Outstanding Cinematography (Eigil Bryld), plus nominations for Outstanding Series, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Art Direction for a Contemporary/Fantasy Series. Also starring in the series are actors Michael Kelly (Changeling, The Adjustment Bureau), Nathan Darrow (Ambrose Bierce:Civil War Stories, Rigged), Mahershala Ali (Benjamin Button, The Place Beyond the Pines), and Rachel Brosnahan (The Unborn, Beautiful Creatures). You can watch the series now on Netflix, and if you missed the first two seasons, be sure to check them out too!

Jamie Foxx Will Portray Mike Tyson In New Biopic

foxx

Fresh off his run as the villainous Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jamie Foxx is moving on to future projects, and he may be stepping back into the biographical spectrum. Recent news reports that Foxx is now set to portray heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson in a new biopic from screenwriter Terence Winter. The film has yet to be picked up by a major studio, but you can bet producer Rick Yorn is working hard on finding a buyer with both an actor and writer already in place. We also don’t know what the scope of the film will be, whether it will focus on Tyson’s early life, his fame period in the 1980s or his fall from the top and prison sentence in the 1990s for a rape conviction. Regardless of the specific plot details, Jamie Foxx seems an appropriate choice for the role. Not only did he receive critical acclaim for his portrayal of Ray Charles in 2004, he has also tackled several sports projects, including Any Given Sunday with Al Pacino and the Muhammad Ali biopic Ali with Will Smith. If all goes well it could turn out to be a pretty great movie. We’ll keep our ears open for more news.
