70th Annual Cannes Film Festival Celebration Begins Today Through May 28th

cannes-70th

Today kicks off the 70th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival in France. A number of anticipated entries are included in this year’s competition. Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled with Colin Farrell, Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, and Kirsten Dunst is her first indie film since 2013’s The Bling Ring. Andrey Zvyagintsev’s new drama Loveless has high expectations after the director’s last film, Leviathan, earned he and his co-writer Oleg Negin the Best Screenplay award in 2014. Director Hong Sang-soo has two films premiering at this year’s festival, The Day After and Clair’s Camera, but both have been kept well under the radar until their upcoming debut.

Director Lynne Ramsay is also looking to impress with her latest project You Were Never Really Here, a drama about a veteran who attempts to help a young girl involved in a sex trafficking ring. Other anticipated projects being tossed around the web are Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Michael Haneke’s Happy End. The festival will open tonight with director Arnaud Desplechin’s Les fantômes d’Ismaël (Ismael’s Ghosts). Another big event at this year’s festival will be a Virtual Reality (VR) film called Carne Y Arena from acclaimed writer/director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant). The film runs a full hour and twenty minutes and is the first Virtual Reality film to ever appear at Cannes. The festival will run from the 17th to the 28th in Cannes, France. You can see a full list of this year’s entries below. Continue reading

Special 20th Anniversary Screenings of Luc Besson’s ‘The Fifth Element’ Showing This May

In 1997, writer/director Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, The Family) released his cult sci-fi classic The Fifth Element, featuring an all-star cast led by Bruce Willis (Die Hard, Pulp Fiction), Milla Jovovich (Dazed and Confused, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Chris Tucker (Friday, Rush Hour), and Ian Holm (The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Day After Tomorrow). Set in the 23rd century, the film follows a cab driver in New York City whose life changes when he inadvertently picks up Leeloo. After being contacted by a strange priest, who informs him of Leeloo’s importance in defeating a great Evil, the three of them embark on a mission to save Leeloo and the universe at large.

The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound Effects/Editing and, over the years, has developed a massive cult following. It also furthered the career of Milla Jovovich, who went on to star in such films as Zoolander and the Resident Evil film series. As a special 20th Anniversary celebration, The Fifth Element will be playing in select theaters across the country on May 14th and 17th. Watch For Director Adam Smith’s ‘Trespass Against Us’ Coming In 2017

Director Adam Smith’s family-crime drama Trespass Against Us received an Official Selection nod at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), as well as top nods at the British Independent Film Awards and the Zurich Film Festival. Following a number of runs at various film festivals here in the United States, the film received a brief limited release back in January, but as of now we have yet to see it picked up for major distribution in theaters nationwide, but here’s hoping that changes! Written by documentary director Alastair Siddons (Turn it Loose, Inside Out), Trespass Against Us follows a man who comes into conflict with his outlaw father and family after he decides he must find a way out of his own criminal world in order to provide a better future for his own family. Michael Fassbender (Macbeth, The Light Between Oceans) and Brendan Gleeson (Cold Mountain, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) lead the cast as Chad and Colby Cutler, the father and son who come to arms with each other over the former’s desire to break free of his criminal past. New ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Trailer Available Now

This holiday season will see another Star Wars film dominating the release schedule. Unlike last year’s Star Wars: Episode 7 – The Force Awakens, whose fan anticipation was the highest since Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace in 1999, Rogue One has already been plagued by script rewrites and unscheduled reshoots. This was in part owing to the lack of direct relevance to any of the original series characters, but also to fan polls that suggested disappointment with earlier plot lines. Nevertheless, production has pushed on and the second trailer for the new film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was just released this week. Rogue One is based on a story by John Knoll (Star Wars: Episode 6 – Return of the Jedi, Avatar) and Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli, After Earth), which was adapted to a script by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, The Golden Compass) and Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Ultimatum, House of Cards) about the Rebel Alliance’s plan to steal the plans to the Death Star, laying the grounds for the epic trilogy that follows with Star Wars: Episode 4 – A New Hope (1977). Director Gareth Edwards (In the Shadow of the Moon, Godzilla) helmed the project with actors Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, The Amazing Spider-Man), Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt, Casino Royale), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Jason Bourne), Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines), Alan Tudyk (I Robot, Dodgeball), and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland, Lee Daniel’s The Butler). Oscar nominee James Earl Jones (Field of Dreams, The Lion King) is also returning to provide the voice of Darth Vader, whose presence in the film will likely hold the biggest intrigue for fans of the series. Check out the new trailer right here on MADE, and enjoy the weekend!

‘Independence Day 2: Resurgence’ Now Playing In Theaters Nationwide

The highly anticipated sequel to director Roland Emmerich‘s 1996 blockbuster Independence Day 2: Resurgence is now playing in theaters nationwide. Despite a failed effort to bring back Will Smith, who played one of the lead roles in the original film, the new sequel has gained much anticipation from fans of the original, who no doubt are excited to see veteran actors Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Bill Pullman (Spaceballs, While You Were Sleeping) reunite onscreen to fight aliens! Also returning from the original film are actors Vivica A. Fox (Juwanna Man, Kill Bill: Vol 1), Brent Spiner (The Aviator, Star Trek: The Next Generation), and Judd Hirsch (Ordinary People, A Beautiful Mind), who are joined by new lead Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, Paranoia), and actors Jessie T. Usher (When The Game Stands Tall, Survivor’s Remorse), Joey King (Crazy Stupid Love, The Conjuring), Maika Monroe (Labor Day, It Follows), Sela Ward (The Day After Tomorrow, Gone Girl), and William Fichtner (Armageddon, Black Hawk Down). Despite popularity among fans, the film has not received good reviews from critics, who have called it “boring” and “loaded down with ’90s cheesiness.” Not sure how audiences will react or if they will agree with the critics, but I guess we’ll find out this weekend. Enjoy!

Veteran Actress Madeleine LeBeau Passes Away At 92

lebeau

Veteran actress Madeleine LeBeau (8 1/2, Angelique), who was the last living cast member of 1942’s Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart (The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep) and Ingrid Bergman (Notorious, Autumn Sonata), has passed away at the age of 92. LeBeau starred as Bogart’s mistress, Yvonne, in a role that mirrored her own experience as a European refugee at the height of the Nazi occupation. LeBeau had made her debut in France with a film called Girls in Distress in 1939 before fleeing with her husband to Spain. They eventually entered the United States with temporary Canadian passports and went to Hollywood to find work. Both LeBeau and her husband, actor Marcel Dalio, were cast in supporting roles in Casablanca, and LeBeau would make two more films (Paris After Dark, Music for Millions) before returning to France following the end of World War II. She would continue to work as an actress until her retirement from the screen in 1970. LeBeau died on May 1st in Spain after breaking her hip.

The film is based on the novel by author Dave Eggers, about a failed American businessman who looks to regain his losses by selling his product to a wealthy Saudi Arabian monarch. Also starring in the film are actors Ben Whishaw (Spectre, The Danish Girl), Tom Skerritt (Alien, Top Gun), Sarita Choudhury (Lady in the Water, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1), and Sidse Babett Knudsen (After the Wedding, The Duke of Burgundy). New Coen Brothers Comedy ‘Hail Caesar!’ Opening In Theaters February 5th

The Coen Brothers are finally back on the big screen with a new comedy titled Hail Caesar!. Starring Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers, Iron Man 2), Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Foxcatcher), Ralph Fiennes (The Constant Gardener, Spectre), Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street, Moneyball) and Coen regulars Tilda Swinton (Burn After Reading, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men, Men In Black 3), and George Clooney (Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, Ocean’s Eleven), the film follows a Hollywood ‘fixer’ who works for Capital Records in the 1950s and must deal with the disappearance of the studio’s biggest star before an upcoming release is ruined by the schemers behind the kidnapping. The film was co-written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen (in their usual fashion), and will be their first project together since 2013’s Oscar-nominated drama Inside Llewyn Davis with Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Carey Mulligan (Drive, The Great Gatsby), although they have written several films since then, including director Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. The trailer for Hail Caesar! is available here on MADE. Look for it in theaters this February 5th.

First Trailer For ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Now Available

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally opening in theaters this week, movie-goers are starting to look to the New Year to get their blockbuster fix. Over the last week we have seen new, full-length trailers for Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and X-Men: Apocalypse, which will bring the comic-movie circuit back to life after the Star Wars bubble finally bursts. This week, however, we have a new trailer for another sequel we have been keeping our eyes on, in the form of Independence Day: Resurgence. Original ID director Roland Emmerich (The Day After Tomorrow, 2012) is back with returning veteran actors Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Bill Pullman (Spaceballs, Lake Placid), Vivica A. Fox (Juwanna Mann, Kill Bill Vol. 1), and Oscar-winner Judd Hirsch (Ordinary People, A Beautiful Mind), leading a new generation of actors including Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, Paranoia), Joey King (Crazy Stupid Love, The Conjuring), Maika Monroe (Labor Day, It Follows), and William Fichtner (Heat, Black Hawk Down). Picking up 20 years after the events of the original film, we find scientist David Levinson (Goldblum) and former President James Whitmore (Pullman) facing a new insurgence of alien visitors that will test the world’s new defense systems that were developed using the technology of the original invaders. Unfortunately for fans of the original, Will Smith will not be reprising his role, and instead the plot will focus on a new-generation fighter pilot (played by Hemsworth) named Morrison, but other than that the rest of the story looks (on the surface) pretty legitimate. As always, we’ll have to wait for the final product to know for sure. Stay tuned for further updates.
