This week will see a number of indie projects open in select theaters across the country. The 9th Life of Louis Drax is a mystery thriller from horror director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D) surrounding a psychologist working with a boy young boy who suffers after a near-fatal fall. The film was penned by actor Max Minghella (The Social Network, The Ides of March), whose late father Anthony was an Oscar-winning screenwriter responsible for such gems as The English Patient and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Check Your Local Listings For This Week’s Limited Releases

Along with Papa Hemingway in Cuba, there are some great limited releases hitting theaters this weekend. First off is a new drama from actor-turned-director Jason Bateman (Arrested Development, Horrible Bosses), Nicole Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut, The Interpreter), Christopher Walken (Pulp Fiction, Catch Me If You Can), and Catherine Hahn (Step Brothers, Parks and Recreation) titled The Family Fang, which is based on the book by Kevin Wilson. The film follows a brother and sister as they return home in search of their famous parents, who have gone missing. Seems fairly promising, but you can be the judge.

Next up is an Italian film titled The Wait (L’attesa) from director Piero Messina (La Porta, Terra) and starring internationally known actress Juliette Binoche (The English Patient, Godzilla) about a mother who unexpectedly meets her future daughter-in-law at a villa in Sicily and waits with her for her son to arrive, concealing some dark secret the entire time. Oliver Stone’s New Biopic ‘Snowden’ With Joseph Gordon-Levitt Now Filming

Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden in upcoming Oliver Stone biopic Snowden (2015).

Director Oliver Stone has presented some pretty controversial biographical films in his career, JFK, Nixon, and W. just to name a few. His latest project, again simply titled Snowden, about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is now filming with actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) in the lead role. More specifically, the plot follows Snowden from his time in the US Army in 2004 to his groundbreaking interview in Hong Kong with documentarian Laura Poitras (whose documentary film, Citizenfour, about that very interview, just won an Oscar for Best Documentary), during which he exposed top-secret NSA documents before fleeing to Russia for asylum. The script comes from two primary sources: author Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Anatoly Kucherena’s Time of the Octopus (Kucherena is Snowden’s Russian attorney), which were adapted for the film by Stone and screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald. Included in the supporting cast are actors Shailene Woodley (Divergent, The Fault in our Stars), Scott Eastwood (Texas Chainsaw 3D, Fury), Nicholas Cage (Face-Off, Matchstick Men), Timothy Olyphant (Live Free or Die Hard, Justified), Zachary Quinto (American Horror Story, Star Trek Into Darkness), and Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton, The Exorcism of Emily Rose). The film is scheduled for release Christmas Day 2015. Stay tuned for more news.

‘The Hunger Games: MockingJay-Part 2’ To Be Released In 3D-IMAX

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games (2012).

The Hunger Games film franchise will be wrapping up this November with Mockingjay-Part 2, and for the first time in the whole series, movie-goers will be able to see it in IMAX 3D. While the first two installments, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire saw release on IMAX screens, last year’s Mockingjay-Part 1 was not released on IMAX or 3D, at least not in the United States. Audiences in China, however, were able to see Mockingjay-Part 1 in 3D, and since the response was so positive, Lionsgate has decided to release Part 2 in 3D as well, so director Francis Lawrence has added another task to his post-production checklist, according to Lawrence the new format will only help to improve the quality of the movie, but I guess it will be up to the fans to decide whether or not it improves upon the earlier films or not. Mockingjay-Part 2 opens in theaters this November 20th, and stars Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), Josh Hutcherson (Bridge To Terabithia, Escobar: Paradise Lost), Liam Hemsworth (Empire State, Paranoia), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, A Most Wanted Man), and Woody Harrelson (No Country For Old Men, Zombieland).
