Having just completed his latest project, Silence, Martin Scorsese is getting back to work on his next, highly anticipated project that will reunite him with Leonardo DiCaprio. The Oscar-winner purchased the rights to Erik Larson’s book The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America back in 2010. Due to scheduling issues between the two film veterans, however, production has been delayed. Now that Silence is finished, Scorsese is ready to get production on this new film underway. As of now, a script is still in the works, but may require more extensive work and research.
Devil in the White City tells the story of Dr. H.H. Holmes, the serial killer who famously lured his victims to their deaths in his elaborately designed “Murder Castle” hotel that was built for the fair. Holmes built his hotel complete with a gas chamber, a dissection/operating table, and even a crematorium for disposing of his victims’ bodies. There were also rooms that only opened on one side, stairs that led to no where and brick rooms that were only accessible by a hatch in the ceiling. In his madness, Holmes even went so far as to constantly change contractors during construction so that only he would know exactly how the hotel was designed.
Holmes’ “Murder Castle” was located at 601-603 W 63rd Street on Chicago’s Southside.
In addition to murdering his victims and disposing of their bodies, Holmes is also known to have sold the remaining parts (skeletons) for medical study. In the end, he confessed to carrying out 27 murders, although only 9 were actually confirmed and he was suspected of killing up to 200 more. His methods of murdering his victims included locking them in rooms until they starved to death, gassing them, or even taking some victims to a special room where he proceeded to hang them. Needless to say, Scorsese and DiCaprio have an opportunity to explore the mind of a truly ruthless, and psychotic killer. Check back in for more updates.
