Noteworthy Entries From This Year’s Berlin Film Festival

berlinale_2017

The 67th Berlin Film Festival, better known as Berlinale, kicks off each year shortly after the Sundance Film Festival ends, and continues with an impressive line-up of independent films, ranging from comedy to drama and even science fiction. This year the festival closed with the premiere of James Mangold‘s R-rated comic entry Logan, which will see the last outing of Hugh Jackman as the immortal and tormented Wolverine, opposite Patrick Stewart reprising the role of Professor Charles Xavier. In addition, director Danny Boyle‘s long-anticipated follow-up to Trainspotting also debuted at the festival, and saw the original cast return for a look at how the characters are dealing with the realities of life 20-years after the drug-induced original. The festival also played host to a solid line-up of independent films. Unfortunately we’re not able to afford the trip (or take the time off) to make it to Berlin for the 10-day celebration, so this all based on reviews and speculation, but here are just a few noteworthy entries we figured were worth mentioning… Continue reading

red_bull_crashed_ice

This weekend, downtown Saint Paul is playing host to both the 2017 Frozen Film Festival and Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship. The Frozen Film Festival is showing a number of student short films on Friday night, followed by a feature-length film titled Viral Beauty. The festival will continue on Saturday and conclude with an awards ceremony and closing party. Events for the festival are being held at the F.K. Weyerhaeuser Theater, located at 75 W. 5th Street, and at TPT Street Space, located at 172 E. 4th Street. The Red Bull Crashed Ice 2017 World Championship, which has now come to Saint Paul six years in a row, is happening downtown at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The event is an ice cross downhill race that begins on the steps of the Cathedral with participants racing on ice skates. Mayor Chris Coleman also usually shows up to take a slow, but admirable attempt at the track, if not just for PR purposes (but you didn’t hear that from us!). Time trials begin at 11am on Friday, and the finals take place from 6:30 – 9:30pm on Saturday. Needless to say there’s plenty to check out this weekend, so be sure to get up and do something!

Chuck U

Drawings by: Chuck U

Chuck U is a Minneapolis artist who is becoming more and more popular, and it is quite¬†obvious why. Whether it is monkeys, astronauts, robots or many other random animals, Chuck’s work is rather intricate and intriguing to say the least. His unique style of drawing has been used for various album covers and flyers around MPLS. You may have also seen some of his work over at the Indeed Brewery; they also use his art work on their cans. I decided to pick just a few of my favorite prints he has available, feel free to visit his website for plenty more.

With all of the amazing music coming out of Chicago, many of the other forms of art have began to be overlooked. One windy city artist who is making a name for himself is, Travon Greer (xTRVONx), who had a breakout year in 2016. His work is often inspired by ancient societies and is hard to miss with it’s vibrant, striking color ways. After garnering a few celebrity commissions and transitioning into apparel/accessories, Travon is getting set to have an even bigger year in 2017. 2017 Oscar Nominees Announced – ‘La La Land’ Ties All-Time Record

2017_oscars

Last year’s Annual Academy Awards ceremony was less than glamorous. In fact, it was downright uncomfortable. You might remember Chris Rock being asked to host the #OscarsSoWhite last January, and although he made some good points and was able to put a good spin on it, the show was ultimately kind of a bust. The final announcement of Leonardo DiCaprio winning the Best Actor Oscar was just one more punch to the face of film-lovers before the ceremony was ended. Don’t get me wrong, Leonardo DiCaprio is definitely worthy of an Oscar, but like Denzel Washington and Al Pacino before him, he was given the award for the wrong role, and at a point way too far into his career. But hey, that’s Hollywood for you. Continue reading

New Teaser Trailer Available For Nacho Vigolando’s ‘Colossal’ with Anne Hathaway

A new teaser trailer is available for Nacho Vigolando‘s Colossal with Anne Hathawy (The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar). The film is currently playing at the Sundance Film Festival and is slated for a domestic release this April 7th. Colossal is a comedic action-thriller with an interesting concept. It follows Gloria, a New Yorker forced to move back to small town America after her boyfriend throws her out for her eccentric party-every-night lifestyle. Upon moving home, Gloria gets a job working at the local bar and continues her excessive drinking, until one morning she wakes up and discovers (in a state of disbelief) that Seoul, South Korea had been terrorized by a giant, Godzilla-like monster the night before. As the phenomenon progresses, she slowly comes to suspect a strange link between herself and the Korean-terrorizing monster.

Strange? Corny? Yes. Hilarious? Yes. Worth seeing? Judging even by the short teaser trailer, definitely! Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigolando (Timecrimes, Extraterrestrial) wrote and directed the film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The cast includes Dan Stevens (A Walk Among the Tombstones, Beauty and the Beast), Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, We’re the Millers), Tim Blake Nelson (Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, Lincoln), Austin Stowell (Whiplash, Bridge of Spies), Rukiya Bernard (Supernatural, Accidental Obsession), and Agam Darshi (2012, Sanctuary). Check back for additional trailers, and remember this one hits theaters on April 7th!
